How do other people do it??

more to the point, can anyone here help me with it?
We're looking at driving the romantic road from frankfurt-munich at the end of june, any tips from somebody who's been or knows the area?
We're finding it tough to get accommodation- we'd been looking at hotels or similar along the way but everything seems.....expensive or not very nice. Ms mac would like to stay in castles, but paying no more than say twenty quid a night- i'm a little more reasonable.
Any thoughts appresh

Did you find anywhere??
Contemplating a holiday in Europe (from the UK) but fairly undecided where. Quite fancy something "wine region-y" but maybe it would be better to just choose somewhere interesting and have some money to spend on wine.

I'm a good planner but I never plan to travel. In 2025 I should take myself on a trip just for me. I wonder where.

For a wine-region, we had a pleasant stay in Piemont this year in May. Stopped in Turino on the way to check the palaces, but didn't enter the city. We stayed in a tiny place called Cassinasco (a b&b off the road called Tenuta Miranda) and drove around. Hill-country, little villages. Alba is worth it, the Grinzane Cavour castle too. Anything called Barolo or Barbaresco is excellent but expensive wine, so we didn't buy much. You could combine with Milan and the Alps, or the Ligurian coast and the Cinque Terre.
It's a long way from the UK though. Otherwise you always have Provence - can't be visited enough. Spain as well.

No! Maybe it's just us but you're not alone. I visit my family 2x a year and that takes a lot of my available time. Also I had a partner for 10 years and he pushed travel more, whereas left to myself I don't think big enough.
Maybe I don't think that me doing things alone is enough reason to go big or spend money on experiences. I should change that.

I am obsessively managing and planning our Europe trip in July, I love that shit
― sleeve, Thursday, 2 January 2025 16:12 (one year ago)
Can you choose somewhere "wine region-y" and then share your obsessive plan?

One of my favorite wine regions I have been to was Rioja. No crowds, beautiful scenery, good wine and some of the best food I have ever had. Biggest travel hazard was getting used to starting lunch at 2:30pm and still being one of the first people in the restaurant.

sleeve, if you need any Rome restaurant or sight recommendations, let me know.

xpost haha no, but I can tell you that I use Lonely Planet for general region recommendations, the Rome To Rio website to find the best transport/travel options, and Google Maps for hotels.
that being said, note that Slovenia (where we are spending 2 days) boasts the world's oldest active grapevine!

PBKR I would love to hear your Rome recommendations!

I hate planning trips but my wife hates it more and has a job where she's not in front of a computer all day, so it falls on me.
I've actually used ChatGPT a couple of times to help plan road trips and it works pretty well as long as you take it with a grain of salt. Currently planning a trip through upstate NY, Canada, Vermont and Mass.

Definitely try to get into the Julian Alps if you're in Slovenia, Sleeve. Absolutely beautiful up there.
The thing I want to do this year is go and walk in the Cairngorms. I do all the planning and then, similar to what orbit said, pull back because I think I shouldn't spend the money.

sadly we only have enough time for the coast and the Skocjan caves, would love to have more time but Rome and Venice beckon

i spent time in scotland last year and while everything was beautiful and spectacular.......its bad value for money for sure imo

oh we also have a week in Holland, half near Utrecht and half near Maastricht if anyone has any recommendations
― sleeve, Thursday, 2 January 2025 22:38 (one year ago)
Oh, I have a map for Venice for you, sleeve, too. Will put this together by the weekend and send through ilxmail if yours works.

Is part of it because you grew up somewhere boring and dumb and now live somewhere where there are more experiences than you have time to experience? I mean, that’s kinda how I feel … I traveled as much as I could growing up.― sarahell
Kind of! When I went to Portugal a few years ago I kept thinking it was unreal. I couldn't believe other places really exist, where reality is different. I came to New York and became LESS cosmopolitan, somehow.

xp my ilxmail does work, thank you!

you could do a p nice holiday on eurostar down to lyon, then visit like dijon, beaune, and smaller towns depending on how much the wine-centricity is part of the trip. lots of other cities/towns very easily accessible by train from there also.
― LocalGarda, Friday, 3 January 2025 09:17 (one year ago)
Just throwing this out there cause it's where my family is from and absolutely gorgeous and the wine is v underrated.

You can stay at my aunt and uncle's b&b lol. V easy to get to via Frankfurt, Strassbourg, or Baden-Baden airports.
The summer wine festivals are amazing.

i am also terrible at this. i just rarely think to myself "Huh, I could just book a plane and go somewhere". It's not that I've knever been on holiday, but it's almost always at someone else's suggestion. I get kind of anxious about the whole admin side of it, or just planning out the trip, or thinking of places I'd really like to go.

My partner on the other hand seems to find this second nature. She seemed to have an instinct for how to pick a country, work out what to do, plan out a schedule, understand the infrastructure and logistics, book affordable flights and accommodation. She visits at least one or two new country every year. I'm lucky to get away once a year, but it's all to do with apprehension and a lack of knowledge more than an unwillingness to do it
