A farmer stares at his cows in disbelief...They're all frozen! Frozen solid! He walks over and taps one on the head and it's like hitting a cow shaped block of ice.
A car with blacked out windows arrive and from the back of it steps a woman. She walks towards the Farmer, a silk scarf wrapped around her head and dark sunglasses obscuring her eyes.
"Where are the cows?" She asks. The Farmer leads her to them and she immediately sets to work, moving between the statue-like creatures. After much muttering and arm waving, the herd of cows return to life! Away they plod to eat the grass as if nothing had happened. The farmer is amazed. "How did you do that?" he asked. "Well," the woman replied, removing her sunglasses..."I'm....Thora Hird!"

Damn, what was that programme where they had 'Famous Battlefields with Thora Hird'? She was describing one particular battle on a hillside, then the camera pulls back and she ascends up the hill on a stairlift (not sure it was actually 'she' she though, I have the memory of a 97-yr old).

i saw an interview with her on the jonathan ross show not long before she died. i would normally turn jr off after about 2 minutes max but she was hysterical.
she told this ridiculously racist story about a coach holiday she went on with a friend of hers just a few years previously: they were traveling round germany and austria with about 40 other pensioners and they stopped off in a town in the austrian alps to look around gift shops. while she was looking in a shop that sold crockery and other china she knocked over a small side table and sent a pile of crockery flying, breaking most of it. thora refused to accept responsibility because she said the table was too small and shaky. the more the assistant pleaded with her to pay up the more she took aversion to the (as she told it) typically forthright and badgering germanic temperament of the assistant. finally, the assistant pleads with her to pay up and asks:
"when my boss comes back and sees all this broken crockery that has not been paid for he will probably sack me - what shall i tell him?"
to which thora answers:
"how about telling him we won the war?" and leaves the shop.

Waiting for the Telegram and A Cracker Under The Settee are two of the greatest things ever to be shown on British TV.
I once met her briefly - she was very funny.
