C/D: Listening to the same music as your crush in an attempt to be 'closer' to them

I think this is probably always classic - even if you don't like it you end up coming up with these amazingly complicated justifications and nuances and by the end of the inevitably doomed crush-period (in which you will have spoken to the crush about twice if lucky) the music will be twisted around your soul like thorns HURRAH! I think it's fascinating the reasons you can come up with under strong motivation (ie HOTTTT BOYS/GURLS).

Maybe he was kidding but it really got to me, his assumption that music tastes were nec gendered. So...maybe I shd just resolve not to date the small-minded, haha.

This is so classic! Except when you're dating that guy who only likes classical music. I mean, I do too, and so I learn to appreciate new stuff there, but HE doesn't want any of your new fangled electric music, no thank you!

I guess my point is it's classic when you both share music, rather than one person imposing their tastes on the other.

There is no point in trying this if you don't like the music. That said, I did make some regrettable purchases in the past for this reason, which is how I reached my current conclusion. (regrettable purchase: having to buy all that weed to make his Led Zeppelin tolerable)

i did this once. I actually bought an Arrested Development disc (which ought to give you an idea of how long ago this was).

Suffice to say, it didn't really work. Still have the disc, though.

Considering I haven't posted once to the WDYLL thread this month, that's fairly rich. If by 'social engagement' you mean 'home, when work finishes in fifteen minutes', however, I doff my cap at your perspicacity.

Mr. Bungle is awful. Ween is good to know some words to, so you and your friends can sing along to "Bananas and Blow" or whatever, but it's not home listening, really. (With some exceptions -- there are Ween songs that I lurve.)

ACtually, I've just remembered a certain someone buying some Leonard Cohen CDs on sale because I'd been listening to him once or twice when she came over. They went on to eBay not too long after :)

classic. it can lead to unexpected digressions. eg with the nf, i downloaded a shitload of stuff he's into and was trying to listen to and understand and get it and some of it was stuff i loved anyway and some of it was kind of meh and some of it i was finding quite hard going - not that it was too difficult, that it was too stupid. and then you're like "WAHT, this is gash, why ru listening to this u big doof?" and it kind of knocks their pedestal awry and you're able to take the piss out of them gently for it and it makes things easy and dislodges that awkwardness. it is ace atm cos we both love a lot of the same music and then there's some of each other's bands that the other absolutely hates and will *never* come around to and we both get that, so there's a bit of pisstaking but we tend to not waste time trying to convince the other to stop liking stuff they like, more trying to convince the other to like stuff they don't.

I have several people I admire and care about greatly to thank in recent months/years for some of the music I now love, regardless of wether they're still in my life, so that makes me really pleased.

I dont think I'd go as far as forcibly listening to something I didnt like though. Guy I hang with right now is into metal. I've happily told him it isnt my thing in the least.

On Saturday night I was listening to music _with_ my crush at the local metal disco, so it's all good.

I've done this but I can't fake enthusiasm for something I don't genuinely like. I'll listen w/ them and if it doesn't gel I'll just be honest and say it's not my thing, but that I'm still interested in sharing in things they like.

i used to do this stuff when i was younger, now i don't feel much of an inclination unless we share tastes or there's some deep connection shit going on. i remember one girlfriend i had she'd actually "steal" the music i introduced her to if she liked it and then she'd act like she introduced it to me or that she liked it in some superior way to me. and if i played something for her and she didn't like she'd take a giant dump all over it, you know, make it personal against me or something. and i dated her for 3 years. those were some good times.

My wife listens to AOR, classic rock, and metalcore these days. When we met, we had our differences but were united by a mutual love for billboard pop (on my part, this was entirely due to ILM exposure). For my Earlier this year we had an attempt at listening to each other's playlists as a way of getting closer. Didn't go so good, and now I own a record by Asia.

Neubauten just released a newer live version of Sehnsucht where Blixa (still currently at 'punch myself in the face' levels of crush) very deliberately sings the untranslateable punning German part of the lyrics in English, going into a chant of "addicted to desire, addicted to desire" which is very much where I'm at regarding crushes. Crushes are a huge source of energy - (I no longer believe they are the only source of energy, but I don't think B does, either any more) - but they are also an addiction. Addictions can both sap and feed one's energy.
