Ok so this thread is pretty ripe for parody and lols but I'd sort of like people to answer it seriously as well - it's for a kid I tutor who's super bright but has terrible problems composing his thoughts into any sort of essay format? When we did this for Marxism it really helped and gave him a great paragraph he could write in any essay on a topic a Marxist would have any opinion on, so I'm really really keen to try it with other viewpoints so he can write something which shows a range of perspectives? I can sort of explain the backgrounds to stuff with a bit of wikipeding.
As an example (nb I have never rly read any Marx, this cld all be wrong anyway), the ones I used for Marxism were:
1. All history is the history is the history of class struggle 2. Religion is the opiate of the masses 3. The French Revolution was the takeover of a feudal state by an emergent beougousie (this one is a bit rubbish and not very soundbitey _ I'd quite like a better one)

The one I'd really like someone to do is a sort of compound conservatism?
1. "Every prudent act is founded on compromise and barter" (Burke) 2. ? 3. ?
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)
Also uh Freudianism wld be cool? There are loads of possibilities!
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)
yes because what the world needs is more handy soundbites and less thinking
― Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)
also religion is a pretty minor subject in Marxism (as is the French revolution - Marx spent more time writing about Napoleon II and the Paris Commune than the French Revolution)

How old is this kid? I think this could help with the adult basic education people I tutor.

I'd like to see the paragraph he wrote, too, if possible.

1. history = struggle btw different segments of society w/ different amounts of power 2. what people (have to) do determines what they think, not the other way around 3. industrialization created a new group of ppl at the bottom, who work but have no connection to what they make (this is bad)
― gff, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)
I think you'd have to get Surplus Value in there somewhere.

bbbut it doesn't make any sense!
― gff, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)
It does too. And it's probly more important to "Marxism" proper than his Hegelian history schtick.

― Abbott, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)
um ok the LTV is
1. a thing 'should' have a value based on how much labor went into making it 2. ppl will pay lots of $$$ for something that seems like lots of labor went into it (commodity fetishism) 3. through industrialization, this relationship is severed, and labor isn't compensated, the surplus going to the owners of production
(it's step 1 that doesn't make any sense)
― gff, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)
I think 1 is problematic mainly cos Marx isn't explicit enough about why the other factors going into production - raw materials & plant, mainly - are always dishonestly acquired in the long run. Otherwise he's saying why shouldn't the worker receive the value of the work s/he's done?
