Vegetarians look away now, what is the best (land based) animal to eat

Inspired by having a bacon roll for breakfast, a pork pie with mustard for lunch and pork medallions in a red wine, bacon and mushroom sauce for dinner. I decided against including fish in this poll as that would have made the choices unwieldy.

Tough choice, but I went with Mr. Oinky.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

No koalas?

Aimless, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

I like beef. Burgers and steaks.

Jeff, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

What snake I've had has been exquisite, I eat chicken about 4 times a week, and beef is what I crave.
I've recently developed a serious thing for pork though (al pastor or a blt for lunch, chops for dinner), so I'll go with that.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Lamb, just over buffalo.

The Reverend, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

No other animal can come close to the versatility and deliciousness of pig.

I DIED, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Difficult but I eat chicken practically everyday so went with that.

Anyone else tried ostrich? Tasted like chicken with the chewiness of beef.

Roz, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

The inclusion of veal in the 'cattle' option makes this a lot easier than I thought it would be.

aldo, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

gotta be the cattle meat

darraghmac, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

I've never had lamb over buffalo!

HI DERE, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

You never tire of eating goat.

Heave Ho, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

CHICKEN.

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Of all the animals I eat regularly, chicken would be easiest for me to give up.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

properly cooked lamb is hard to beat. and white veal is pretty damn delicious (although with both these meats i have to pretend i don't know where they come from).

Rubyredd, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

having to explain where white veal comes from to customers at my restaurant, is sometimes fun/traumatising (for them).

Rubyredd, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

Beef, it's what's for dinner.

Insects are not animals.

Misery, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

oops...actually didn't mean to have caps lock this go-round.

Abbott, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

I've never had lamb over buffalo!

It really brings out the flavor.

The Reverend, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

so much of this depends on how you cook it... if you are doing the food middle eastern or style, it would have to be chicken. Likewise if my mum is doing the cooking.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

You guys are nuts. Pig, in all its forms, is the most wonderful thing to eat. Bacon, for one. Salami, slow-cooked shoulder, barbecued ribs, sausages, mortadella, lardo, double-thick caveman chops...

schwantz, Sunday, 30 September 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Simple pig is not even in the same league as the wonder that is lamb over buffalo.

The Reverend, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

French madrange ham, blackforest ham, serrano ham. Oh the pork deli meats.

I still give a slight edge to beef, but pork rules the land of thin sliced sandwich meats.

Jeff, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Pigs are smarter than dogs, so they say.

Not smart enough to undeliciousify themselves, say I.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

poulet au pot vs saddle of rabbit vs venison burgers w/fried apple vs entrecote w/ stilton vs confit duck leg w/red cabbage vs devilled chicken livers vs braised oxtail vs BACON vs where are the grouse vs curried goat omg

an unanswerable question in general terms, I think

Matt, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Brutally difficult between pig, cattle and sheep varieties.

roxymuzak, Monday, 1 October 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

I drove past an emu farm yesterday, they had one sign that said "EMU - PETS" and then a couple of hundred metres down another that said "EMU - MEAT". It was bizarre.

(chicken ftw)

chicken...are you people serious?
pork 100x over

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

I mean I like chix too, don't get me wrong, but it's like the thing restaurants put on the menu for the unadventurous eaters who need everything to be like chicken. It's good, and I cook it, but...BEST??? No way.

Laurel, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

otm

Rock Hardy, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

of course i love chicken...it's....versatile? but so plain on it's own! it's got to be fried or heavily seasoned to hold my attention.

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

like a good cut of beef or pork can be amazing just broiled or grilled or seared, but, a good cut of chicken? um

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

but, but, what about Thai food etc? I would prefer chicken over beouf en generale in curries/soups/stirfry/etc

W4LTER, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeah chicken is good IN things! don't get me wrong. it just needs other flavors (or heavy frying) to be interesting. it's like the tofu of meats.

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

Oh lord, I love beef pad siew so much.

Laurel, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

beef panang mmmm

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

i have been really craving wild boar lately, but i've got no idea where i can get it.

and i want the weather to get cold so i can make lamb stew.

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

lamb. it's the only meat i could eat twice a day for the rest of my life and never get sick of.

John Justen, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

jowl bacon? really?

darraghmac, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Really. It's a New Year's Day tradition down here, along with blackeyed peas and cabbage.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'm kinda wishing i'd gone for pork now that you've mentioned bacon and cabbage.

darraghmac, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

that's black pudding, bell.

lauren, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

while a really nice lamb shank or shoulder might be the tastiest thing ever, you just can not fuck with the amount of amazing morsels that a pig provides.

mizzell, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

i almost started a poll the other day on "meats of the morning" but i couldn't remember the name of that black hockey puck looking stuff that comes in an irish breakfast.

-- bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:12 (35 minutes ago) Link

That would be black pudding (or blood sausage - same thing) which is made from pig's blood, pork fat, pearl barley, herbs and spices. Utterly disgusting in theory, utterly delicious in practice.

Thus proving that the swine is the meat animal supreme...

Stone Monkey, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

this is tough. i'd say the cow might just edge out the pig for me (rare filet steak vs. bacon - impossible to choose only 1), although lamb is definitely delicious. but so is horse. and also (not included in poll) is elk, caribou, ostritch...

Rob Bolton, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

elk is soooo great.

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

horse seems like it would be stringy, no?

bell_labs, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

horse is very very tender and tasty (based on what i've had anyway)

bahh... i think i change my mind to pig since we're just talking about the best animal to EAT. if it was one of these "choose only one animal to bring to your new planet" versatility-type situations, it would definitely be the cow because of the CHEESE factor (the sheep running a close second)

Rob Bolton, Monday, 1 October 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

I wish the skunk-cheese strip was still available at the Maakies website...

Rock Hardy, Monday, 1 October 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

interesting point by Rob- of course the pig is delicious, but it's basically all negative after that. other animals try harder, so can't concentrate on being yummy ALL the time.

darraghmac, Monday, 1 October 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Where is Thermo to tell us what dog with sprinklings of ant is like.

It's pretty tasty! The texture is ok but the meat itself is kind of chewy/gristly.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 1 October 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Jeff, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

horse is very very tender and tasty (based on what i've had anyway)

wow.

W4LTER, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if people who put chicken down have never had, say, a good-quality, well-prepared cornish game hen. We don't eat inventive cuisine every day, and for good reason. And anyway, what's less inventive than a burger, a steak, your bacon standards? I'll take fish for that, thanks.

I'm tempted to vote for venison, but it's hardly the most versatile, and I wouldn't eat it these days.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Either I am very thick, or the last post is incomprehensible.

John Justen, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

maybe you've been eating too much venison

gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

not zinging, i honestly have no idea what you are trying to say.

John Justen, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

fish are more inventive than bacon? WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

John Justen, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

fish are smarter than bacon

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Inventiveness is not a criterion that enters into most of my day-to-day eating. I save that for one-off occasions like the trip to Morimoto or the recent rijsttafel for 16. I'll judge a hamburger against the best hamburger I've ever eaten, not against the best meal I've ever eaten.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

But like has been said upthread, the pig is the most purely versatile food animal by a fur piece.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

i like prosciutto, soppressata, pancetta and lardo just fine, at least in small doses, but my attitude is basically 'big deal, it's salty fat.' give me something healthier/subtler, or richer/heartier. something more complex. admittedly, i ate very little of it growing up (pig is a filthy animal etc), and i don't have much of a salt tooth.

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pork

Prior to the mass-production and re-engineering of pork in the 20th Century, pork in Europe and North America was traditionally an autumn dish; pigs and other livestock coming to the slaughter in the autumn after growing in the spring and fattening during the summer. Due to the seasonal nature of the meat in Western culinary history, apples (harvested in late summer and autumn) have been a staple pairing to fresh pork. The year-round availability of meat and fruits has not diminished the popularity of this combination on Western plates.

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

pork lovers: come to my restaurant and have thin, tenderised pork fillets in a light creamy sauce with thin slices of fresh apple, diced dried apricots, pistachio and pinenuts and a little apple sours liqueur. or try the same pork fillets in a creamy button mushroom and madeira sauce.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

or the tortellini amatriciana, ricotta-stuffed pasta parcels in a rich tomato sauce with bacon and chili.

[stupid customers: plz stop pronouncing 'americana' - it has a freakin' T in it!]

Rubyredd, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

plz to open your restaurant in MN because that sounds AWESOME.

John Justen, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

if you come to nz i will give you a generous discount and free booze. i'm good like that.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 4 October 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

Salty fat is my ultimate foodstuff -- apart from possibly mint chip ice cream, but it's a pitched battle.

Laurel, Thursday, 4 October 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Where is the SHMOO option here?

Laurel, do you like the chicharones? (sp?)

Abbott, Thursday, 4 October 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

Have never had, Abbott! I admit animals skins don't really appeal in concept so I think I've avoided eating them.

Laurel, Thursday, 4 October 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

They are hot fat salt crunch yum.

I had v. good garlic-coated red snapper the other day...fuck you that which creepeth on the land.

Lamb seconded.

Pig might be delicious, but you'd get pretty sick of it if it was the only meat you ate.

S-, Friday, 5 October 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

PIG not pork. sausages, bacon, ham, gammon... and pork. So versatile. So tasty. Pork scratchings, pigs trotters... ok I've never had pigs trotters.

ledge, Friday, 5 October 2007 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

And black pudding. Trotters are good.

There was a thread somewhere where Tep(?) talked about putting a whole pig's head on a barbecue and picking off the various bits of it and how they all tasted different. It was signed off "Truly, the pig's head is nature's bacon."

aldo, Friday, 5 October 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also Brawn, chitterlings etc. etc. Pretty much the only thing on a pig that isn't edible is the squeal.

Ed, Friday, 5 October 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Only 3 votes for human despite it's apparent porky qualities.
