I am 26, so I have some fond teenage memories of this decade.

Discuss.

max r, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

9/11 is so 90s.

max r, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

Clothes-wise, far more embarassing than I thought possible.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously - 26" leg openings on JNCOs, what the fuck were we thinking? And those were before the leg opening arms race got ridiculous and they started stitching dragon designs on the ass.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

aww fond memories here too!

Surmounter, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

90% of the popular music from this decade is unlistenable. Rage Against The Machine holds up surprisingly well in comparison.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

Liz Phair is really hot in her VH1 "I Love The '90s" spots

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

Remember how pissed off we all were at how far to the right Clinton went after '94? Oh, so naive.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

90% of the popular music from this decade is unlistenable.

So patently false unless all you listened to was VH1.

The Reverend, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think after the end of the cold war and before 11/9, there was a certain sense of levity in popular culture, things weren't as "serious as your life". That would be my flawed, sweeping generalisation on the decade. ;)

max r, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

sorry - popular rock music

I would sooner take an ice-pick to the ear than sit through a '90s Alt-Rock Nostalgia Hour

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

I don't detect much change from the mid-90s until today--yeah, obv. we have faster internet connections now and are fighting in Iraq rather than thinking about fighting in Bosnia--but the all-crisis-all-the-time-stuff stuff seems to begin with the 1st WTC bombing on to Waco and OJ and Rwanda and Haiti and Ruby Ridge and OK City and Newt and Rabin and Monica and Impeachment and Columbine and Elian Gonzales and Children of Thalidomide...

mulla atari, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

I once carried my math book to lunch in the back pocket of my JNCOs.

Clothes were way baggier, weren't they? I was really skinny until the age of about 19, so they were super-baggy on me. Even small T-shirts were loose, tight Ts were hard to find.

I dunno, lots of "cool" things like house music and indie and IT and hip hop went from "quite big" to "the actual mainstream now".

That's the impression I got, anyway.

House and indie were more mainstream in the early 90s than the late 90s.

I remember thinking back in the 90s that the clothes were a big improvement over the 80s. They seemed so basic and straightforward, timeless even. I thought that they would never look ugly or out-of-style.

Oh, how wrong I was...

This educational music video from 1991 by the Finnish Alcohol Company provides a wonderful example of early 90s cool.

The video warns teens not to have sex while drunk, btw, as they might forget to use a condom. The chorus: "sex is fun while you're sober / when you're drunk you do it the wrong way". If I'd personally followed this maxim, I'd probably had about 60% less sex in my life.
