I have a work-related question!

What are some marketing methods a previously unknown e-commerce site could use to launch itself into a new market? 'Viral marketing' eg spam and sponsorship are what I can think of to start off...

The site in question is 'big in Europe' and wants to launch in Britain. All answers gratefully received so I can put together a rubbish slide on this topic.

Annoying billboards!

Dumb publicity stunts followed by even dumber press releases!

Do not help him! Tom you should be asking T the T not ILE.

Here is my helpful advice, which was inspired by Metro which had a story last week about a farmer who was hit badly by Foot 'n' Mouth and in order to afford lamb raincoats (I have no idea why these are needed but still) he got a local website to sponsor them and thus there are loads of ickle lambs gambolling about somewhere in the north advertising a website.

Online shopping - clothes and household goods.

I'm more interested in examples of what methods companies have used.

Advertising in traditional print media or reviews of the service in magazines/papers read by the traget market?

What is their point of differentation and who are their competitors?

jel --, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

COmpetitions in print media - which need to be accessed via media website. Done in partnership with the online version of the newspaper means it does not feel directly like marketing, and then the exit page of the competition can be more about the service - end page. Centrium did a very successful link up with Metro in January of this year (successful in as much as it increased traffic...)

Force people to visit the site at gunpoint. This might require some heavy capital investment.

Buy the naming rights to a major stadium. Do companies even DO this in UK or Europe? Isn't that Millenium dome thing available? [I was amazed that as I flew to Amsterdam, I looked out the window at random and immediately recognized the Millenium dome far below. Is it visible unaided from space, like the Great Wall? Maybe this company could have its logo screened onto the roof of the dome.]

Alt: I've always wanted to go to UK, why not hire me to walk around with a sandwich board and a bell. I'm quite affordable.

you should post messages to internet forums about how great your company is, without revealing that you in fact work for the company.
