Yes I know this is three months in advance but nothing like getting in early. Also I haven't actually booked anywhere to stay yet and should probably do so soon - any recommendations for somewhere reasonably convenient and not amazingly expensive would be greatly appreciated.
Obviously it'd be cool to FAP and otherwise hang out as well but we can sort that nearer the time.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:38 (seventeen years ago)
Also I've kind of lost touch with who is and isn't in NYC at the moment, but if anyone has any contact details for Mary/Geeta/Felicity/Phil/other people who aren't checking the boards these days then let me know.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:41 (seventeen years ago)
You could try http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/ which has a lot of cheap guest house type places.
― Ed, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:45 (seventeen years ago)
geeta's reachable on facebook. get a hotel ASAP, i imagine it will be packed out everywhere round then. i would recommend the hotel i stayed in which was lower midtown and very cheap (under 50 a night) but it was pretty skanky and i bet it will be bloody freezing there in Dec.
― blueski, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:46 (seventeen years ago)
I will be there in november and december, but I guess I should start another thread.
― Ed, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:49 (seventeen years ago)
hotel 17 has done right by several ilxors.
― lauren, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 13:24 (seventeen years ago)
Mary is back in NYC, I believe she's librarianing for real! I've got Phil's number as do many others, and Felicity's too.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:02 (seventeen years ago)
Cool - I'm not about to phone any of them but might sling them an email going "hey I'm coming to your city fancy a pint?"
Hotel 17 looks pretty good - is that a decent price for New York around that time of year? I'm afraid I have no real frame of reference here.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago)
it's really cheap
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
that price is really good. it's not the swankiest in terms of decor, of course, but it's an excellent location. generally, it can be hard to find decent options for under $200.
― lauren, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago)
Hi Matt! I tried to talk to you on aim but you disappeared. Looking forward to seeing you, and everyone else (I'll be in NY by the end of October). There was another hotel in Gramercy that people have stayed at--I forget the name(?) But I'm not sure if it's any better (cheaper) than Hotel 17. Geeta is in Montreal I believe.
― Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
I'll be in NYC the first weekend of November, so any hotel suggestions appreciated (I may stay with friends a couple of nights).
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)
Right, Hotel 17 booked, thanks for the recommendation Lauren.
I hear whispers I may not be the only Londoner in NY that week, as well.
― Matt DC, Friday, 19 October 2007 15:54 (seventeen years ago)
I've heard rumors that it's going to be a British Invasion. Yay, Matt. Come and visit me in Astoria (Queens).
― Virginia Plain, Saturday, 20 October 2007 02:46 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah that'd be great (this is Mary, I assume?)
I will be there with a pretty big group of Britishes (like, 20+) but I'm not going to be spending all week with them and most of them have nothing at all to do with ILX so I'll probably split off from them for any internet mentalist-related stuff.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:38 (seventeen years ago)
Yes, I am Mary. Why so many Britishers?
― Virginia Plain, Saturday, 20 October 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago)
New York I love you and I'm coming to town.
That is, I'm paying a fleeting visit from Monday-Thursday next week if anyone is around and fancies a US pint-equivalent? (even, if it really exists, a drop of the mythical Brown Drink?)
Um, you might remember me from such oldie-timey ILx roles as Edna Welthorpe, Mrs and Jerry the Nipper.
― Stevie T, Friday, 26 October 2007 11:51 (seventeen years ago)
don't forget fellow britishers, take some id out with you - i got id'd to death around the village area bars and i'm 33 y/o lol !!
― Ste, Friday, 26 October 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
Trousers! Wowow awesome, we shall imbibe.
― Laurel, Friday, 26 October 2007 14:27 (seventeen years ago)
I can probably come out. What is the brown drink?
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 26 October 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
WAIT!!!! I've just forgotten the infamous "BROWN DRINK" available only at Welcome to the Johnsons on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Or in your own kitchen. Here's how to do it:
* Fill a pint glass half-full of ice cubes. * Pour one shot of Raspberry Stoli. * Fill glass about 3/4 up with Dr. Pepper. * Top off with Guinness.
Yummier than Buckfast and twice as lethal.
-- Tracer Hand, Thursday, June 14, 2001 12:00 AM (6 years ago)
I visited Johnson's a year or two after Tracey's recommendation, but requests for The BD were met only with quizzical expressions.
― Stevie T, Friday, 26 October 2007 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
Dean Young is doing a reading at the 92nd Street Y on Thursday. I'm assuming tickets are still available.
― youn, Saturday, 27 October 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago)
Hello NYCILXers. Right then, I fly into New York on Friday night (like, arriving at midnight) and will be around for a whole week. Also London ILX's very own Anna will also be in town from Sunday to Wednesday. Two Londoner for the price of one.
Joint FAP on Monday evening anyone? It's the only night both of us can manage but I'm pretty flexible for other nights of the week.
― Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago)
YES, we have been loosely planning noise FAP for same time. Don't think we have a venue yet tho?
― Laurel, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago)
Anywhere reasonably easy to get to from the East Side suits me fine - I'm not hugely fussy about these things. I'm staying here, not sure where Anna is.
― Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
somewhere in the east village/les? if past lodgings are any indication, then anna will probably be midtown-ish.
― lauren, Monday, 10 December 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago)
take the chic and super hip l train to livonia ave - its the latest hotsotpsO!
― burt_stanton, Monday, 10 December 2007 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
Hello - yes, I'm staying at the Hudson, so Midtown, but don't worry - I haven't suffered finding the Lower East Side/ East Village on previous trips. Will be good to meet more of you.
― Anna, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago)
Felicity has said she'll be able to come along for a bit if we do Monday night in Williamsburg. Anna is that likely to be possible for you?
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:04 (seventeen years ago)
This is going to end up at Dadd'y's isn't it

― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:18 (seventeen years ago)
What about someplace on Grand?
I mean hell, except for Felicity we could have it at WW quite happily.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago)
Monday is pretty much my only free night, but I'm not realy bothered about the area - I'll leave that to the locals.
― Anna, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
I can't go back to my favorite bar on grand anymore.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:25 (seventeen years ago)
THANKS TO THE LAST TIME I WENT THEIR WITH UKIANS
Is this Pete's fault by any chance?
I would prefer Williamsburg especially since I've been planning to go there anyway and Monday seems as good a time as any. this and this have been mentioned and both look pretty great.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago)
In Williamsburg on the weekend, never trust anyone in a vertical striped dress shirt. always deny their request to "pound it brah"
― burt_stanton, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
Oh fine, just let me know where you all decide on. Neither of those would be my choice of bars but you can't have everything, eh?
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
I'll go for the biergarten, at least it looks like there stands a chance of being an out-of-the-weather smoking area.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:42 (seventeen years ago)
Matt, across the street from Spuyten Duyvil exists FETTE SAU, a pork BBQ & beer by the gallon place run by the same people. NOM NOM NOM
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:46 (seventeen years ago)
Also Spuyten Duyvil is much more centrally located for uppity Manhattaners and cranky South Brooklyn G train riders.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:47 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I mean, it's a FAP, just pick something I guess.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
Pretty sure neither Spuyten Duyvil or Fette Sau serve Budweiser but fuck it. You're driving me to tequila, I just hope you know that.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

You're driving me to tequila I just hope you know that.
― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
Just pick the best bar in the area that's easy to get to, I'm not especially bothered. I think a decent smoking area might be considered an advantage though.
Spuyten Duyvil appears to serve something called Tower of London MEAD. I have never once seen mead on sale, even in London.
It's nice to know that pub indecision is by no means confined to London fappage.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:53 (seventeen years ago)
We're not so much indecisive as we are overly opinionated, Matt. It's sort of the reverse of the "Oh, go ahead, you choose" "No, YOU choose" "No, really, I just couldn't" that I imagine LondonLX doing.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:54 (seventeen years ago)
Also hating 85% of the available bars is kind of my thing.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago)
Haha your imagination is so wrong - we do this every time, and are still counting the casulties from the fierce pub v bar fite when Alba came to visit three years ago.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

I had 1x amazing week, but now absolutely destroyed after a night time flight plus 7 days of constant walking and excessive drinking and not very much sleep. Thank god I don't have to go into work for another week and a half.

it was cool meeting everybody, i'm really glad i got the chance.
i was there with some non-ILX friends before everyone showed up and had kind of briefly explained to them how i knew these people who were coming to the bar soon. later, my friend told me that when the first few ILXors approached our table, he "knew they were grady's friends because they just looked like they were from the internet."
