Long overdue. What do we have to say of this ancient and venerable art?

I can honestly say that I have never seen anyone do this well.

I bought one of those throw your voice/bird warbler gizmos from a joke shop once, but I couldn't do any ventriloquy with it.

I was heartbroken as a kid when my Dad cruelly told me you could see Shari Lewis's lips move.

"art"

I thought this would be a thread where we put words into the mouths of other ILXors. I see I am wrong.

Back to the requested topic, it seems to me the wierdest thing that Edgar Bergen and his dummies Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd became bigtime showbiz celebrities by doing ventriloquy on the radio. This never did compute for me.

There was a guy who did this in the UK too. Peter Brough and his puppet Archie Andrews had a hugely popular radio show in the early 50s called Educating Archie. My Dad says when Brough eventually appeared on TV it turned out he was rubbish and couldn't keep his lips still at all.

latebloomer, Friday, 5 October 2007 06:58 (seventeen years ago)

the explanation for Bergen-McCarthy: they were funny

I always wondered what drew those humble few practitioners to ventriloquy. What is the appeal?

I love the scene @ end of Best in Show where Harlan Pepper is doing ventriloquy to a tiny, irritated audience.

Madame was funny. Interesting that waylon was such a success not being a ventriloquist but rather an out in the open puppeteer. He created such a great character though.

oh ok

latebloomer, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

I had a sudden flashback about Madame existing last year and it kind of freaked me out. I had blanked her/it totally from my memory.

Madame's most recent game show appearance was in the Tom Bergeron version of Hollywood Squares, where she was a panelist for one week in 2004. The puppet is currently on display in the permanent collection of the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia.
