according to a new biography charles schulz considered garfield "the ugliest, most vicious and insulting character" he'd ever seen.

looking at those pictures, it struck me for the first time what weird design all the garfield characters have. jon barely even has a nose.

"I found that my cat was completely unresponsive to my overtures until I turned off the refrigerator There was obviously some kind of electrical field interference created by its motor that got in the way of my vibratory connection with Tiger. I bought a new refrigerator but I had to send it back because the same problem occurred. I tried out two more before I found one that doesn't affect Tiger. We now have a much closer relationship and are much nearer to being able to energize through the dance. The thing with the refrigerators certainly made me wonder about how all our electrical appliances and how they affect us!"

I hope by this he just meant that Garfield sucked, because the ugly, gross Garfield from the early comics is actually kind of amusing even if the jokes aren't.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

You mean the early '78 strips where he's this laconic dropping lard mountain?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that's a better garfield visually imo.

I think bringing back tank Garfield means we'd have to revive Lyman, too. Is the world really ready for someone as bland as Lyman?

17th Century Catholic Spain (Abbbottt), Saturday, 30 October 2010 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

AMG review:

America's zaniest lasagna-eating, owner-abusing cat curates this collection of contemporary jazz/blues/smooth R&B songs themed around his life. No stone is left unturned in paying musical homage to our favorite orange feline. Whether commenting on his mischievous abuse of Odie the Dog, eating too much lasagna, or loathing Mondays, Am I Cool or What? covers it all. Starring a wide-ranging ensemble of artists, including the Pointer Sisters, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, and Lou Rawls, this is a perfect way to not only introduce children to many of these musical styles but to do so in an extremely fun atmosphere.

4.5 stars

my parents bought it for me (from a bargain bin? who knows) when I won an award for my score on the Johns Hopkins Talent Search, which was a standardized test aimed at getting parents to pay $$$ to enroll their "gifted" kids in correspondence courses at Johns Hopkins. I was disappointed that there weren't more Lorenzo Music (the voice of Garfield) voiceovers. iirc he shouts "here it comes!" during the breakdown in the middle of "Shake Your Paw" and I think John Arbuckle makes a brief appearance, but that's about it. what I really wanted was a soundtrack to the Garfield & Friends TV series, but I guess that's never gonna happen.

lonely is as lonely does, lonely is an eeyore (unregistered), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

there's a great segment on that show where Jon gets a new job at some big shot high-rise office, but he's worried that his new boss will think he's weird because he accidentally comes in to work without his pants on, and out of nervousness he starts singing "doo wop, doo wop, doo wop, dooooooooo!" but it turns out the boss loves him because he, too, comes to work in his underwear, and "doo wop, doo wop, doo wop, dooooooooo!" is his favorite song. they sing a duet (which is def. soundtrack material) and generally get along like old friends, but in the end Jon gets fired because his boss thinks it's weird that he bites his nails.

this may or may not be the same episode in which Jon tries to kick his habit of wearing tuna fish as a hat by playing a record of a soothing voice saying "I will not wear tuna fish as a hat" on repeat all night while he sleeps.

also lol @ "won an award for my score on the Johns Hopkins Talent Search, which was a standardized test aimed at getting parents to pay $$$ to enroll their "gifted" kids in correspondence courses at Johns Hopkins" I won some kind of award for that too but never went to JH for the classes. I don't really remember the details now.

ENBB, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

ha, it's a pretty big ego boost for parents to be told "YOUR 11-YEAR-OLD CHILD IS PERFORMING AT A HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL," & even more so for kids who don't realize they're being solicited. my parents took the bait and enrolled me in the correspondence course for like $300. I was really into Jim Kjelgaard back then (which is weird because I was also a hardline "hunting is murder" environmentalist), so for one assignment I wrote a 20-page Kjelgaard pastiche about a game warden who, while chasing evil poachers through the woods, found a turtle with a broken leg and nursed it back to health at the log cabin where he lived alone. I also wrote an epic poem about a squirrel. every month I'd send in one of these assignments and I'd receive feedback from a REAL PUBLISHED POET from Cape Cod who kinda had nothing to do with Johns Hopkins aside from the fact that they paid her. it actually improved my writing skills a lot and made my middle and high school English classes super easy, so I guess it was worth it in the long run.

peter in montreal, Thursday, 26 May 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

the ones where jon keeps getting swindled by that car salesman named (haha) 'mr schwindler' or something like that were classic.

the tv show was entirely written by mark evanier (jack kirby's old assistant and recent biographer, also sergio aragones' long-time collaborator on 'groo') so it was always pretty funny. lots of the same kind of humor as 'groo' -- semi-vaudevillian shtick, non sequitur running gags (remember the 'klopman diamond' garfield used to mention all the time?), etc.
