from wiki :

Many recipes from The Anarchist Cookbook (specifically, napalm and several other varieties of homemade explosives) are mentioned in the film "Fight Club",

I thought I'd heard that the recipes mentioned in fight club were falsified, or was it just in the book?

The first charge relates to the possession of material for terrorist purposes in October last year.

The second relates to the collection or possession of information useful in the preparation of an act of terrorism.

So presumably the AC is the information, but this kid went further and actually got the ingredients together, hence possession of material.

The second relates to the collection or possession of information useful in the preparation of an act of terrorism.

My teacher once told me "Fail to plan, plan to fail" which must be quite a useful piece of information in the preparation of an act of terrorism I'm doomed :(

Well under the Terrorism Act 2000 "providing instruction or training in the use of firearms, explosives or chemical, biological or nuclear weapons" is an offence so might that cover giving somebody a link to that information?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

I assume they've got evidence that he was gonna try to use recipes from the book. Otherwise law = ass etc.

ledge, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:02 (seventeen years ago)

Why does my anarchist crepes end up more like a pancake??

King Boy Pato, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

Ok, so further reading shows that indeed it would appear to be an offence under Section 58 of that Act to possess a document or record containing information useful to terrorists (I'm paraphrasing here).

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

a bus timetable is information useful to terrorists

ledge, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah like buses are ever on time.

Jarlrmai, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

Yep but you could have a good reason for having a bus timetable.

Here's the bit in the Act...

58 Collection of information

(1) A person commits an offence if—

(a) he collects or makes a record of information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, or

(b) he possesses a document or record containing information of that kind.

(2) In this section “record” includes a photographic or electronic record.

(3) It is a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had a reasonable excuse for his action or possession.

My italics.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

Yep but you could have a good reason for having a bus timetable.

Yes, and I guess you could have a harmless reason for reading the AC (e.g. us. I don't think anyone would say that we're breaking the law by following the link). I suppose its a mens rea thing, and the fact that this kid presumably had 48 bars of soap and an old-fashioned alarm clock is what got him into trouble.

caek, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

My teacher once told me "Fail to plan, plan to fail"....

On first scan, I read this as plan to fail, plan to fail.

http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/Yorkshire-teenager-in-court-on.3214623.jp

"The prosecutor alleged 250g of calcium chloride was also found which features in the chapter "How to Make a Plastic Explosive". Videos including the devil's face made in smoke following the 9/11 attacks, beheadings and references to jihad were also allegedly found at the address."

(last two courtesy of slashdot btw)

koogs, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

Oh. That's not quite what the other articles first panicked about, is it? :-/

StanM, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

Well obviously he was going to make some <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_chloride>;Brie</a>. Is 250g a lot?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

Try again...

Not Brie

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

After you've bought your AC from Amazon stay online to buy 50 kilos of the stuff. All your terrorist needs catered for! I'm gonna tell the Daily Mail.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry 50 pounds...

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

"250g of calcium chloride" - what's that, enough pellets for one potted plant?

StanM, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

oh noes not calcium chloride!

ken c, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:30 (seventeen years ago)
