Also, it sucks.

Oilyrags, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

I enjoy this request, but at not certain to what extent I can restrain myself into applying it.

Abbott, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

This is like when I was six and my dad made it a rule that I couldn't talk about Dragon Quest in the same room or car as him. This lead to me quietly drawing a lot of Dragon Quest characters on car trips and in church.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

haha I should have started this thread at noon

HI DERE, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

This is also like when my dad refused any longer to allow me to read every single strip in a Bloom County compendium to him. ("and then,,,and then....hahahahahaha...and then, okay, and THEN see, Steve Dallas? Is shaving? In the bathroom? and, and, okay?")

Abbott, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

ENOUGH, OKAY. My dad doesn't find Calvin & Hobbes funny, either -- as far as he's concerned Calvin is an ungrateful self-centered head-in-the-clouds who is careless with objects and possessions that were purchased/procured for him by others.

Laurel, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

sorry ;_____;

Mr. Que, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

Dear Editors,

I am writing because I find the behavior displayed in your paper by the dog "Marmaduke" to be wholly unacceptable, nay, verging on the dangerous.

This dog is never corrected, disciplined or punished. The message sent is that it is comical or even "cool, man" to let one's animal go completely to seed.

Were I in charge of a dog like "Marmaduke", I would have no recourse to have it put down; I ask now that you do the same with this most unworthhy feature of your paper.

I don't think my dad was ever six years old, is kind of the thing. I'm not even sure he was six when he WAS six.

Laurel, Monday, 8 October 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

hstencil is right even though he said "non-shocker" (which has always seemed stupid to me since the whole deal with the "shocker" thing is the implied sarcasm)

this comic is pretty entertaining sometimes. I think the part that weirds me out about its hardcore fans is how hyper-consumerist they are about the shit ton of merch the website sells. I mean, I respect the guy's business savvy for selling all those signed strips and basically offering any kind of product a reader might want, but there are people on this board practically bragging about how much they've spent on a slightly hipper version of Garfield w/ suction cup paws.

when I was 6 and in Kindergarten all my writing assignments had to do with Super Mario World, to the extent that my teacher sent a letter home to my parents saying I needed to think about something else.

actual, actual, actual, (corey), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

ever write about the negative worlds? man those were so trippy, i mean how did people even find out about that. do you suppose it was a game engineer who told some gossipy friend about the magic brick he'd rigged up in 1-2? or was it merely some jump-and-duck prone civilian who happened upon it as a surprise? bet no one even believes him to this day that he was the first to "go negative"

del griffith, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

Oh that was Super Mario Bros. Super Mario WORLD had places named after desserts, like Cookie Mountain.

actual, actual, actual, (corey), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

but I wonder how long anyone has played any of the negative worlds, like after a while you'd be on some Warhol shit

I had a thought about achewood and Onstad this morning, stepping off the train on my way to my second coffee. That thought was He was a guy who could draw a cat standing up, saying emo shit, and he figured out a good way to make oven fries. I am older now, and so I know he isn’t that interesting. Was he the webcomic Strokes?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 04:45 (seven years ago)

You're likely onto something.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 05:10 (seven years ago)

I remember loving Cornelius, Ray and Roast Beef, but I can’t remember anything they ever said.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 05:22 (seven years ago)

Your analogy doesn't entirely work, because the Strokes made really shitty oven fries.

i only know about this because of the amazing one about steely dan

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 05:54 (seven years ago)

counterpoint: Achewood was a wonderful, broad body of work, cast over multiple media for more than a decade, before the creator focused on creative work in other fields. The Strokes had a couple of vaguely OK singles in late 2001, and the lead singer released Phrazes For The Young.

What's an example of a good Achewood instalment? I don't get it at all - seems like a lot of callback humour and Reddit Man non-sequiturs. Is there a sequence that showcases what it can do without being impenetrable to unfamiliars?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 08:19 (seven years ago)

I'm with (sic)

"Taste's very strange!" (stevie), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 08:32 (seven years ago)

And Achewood might be something that doesn't work in "a single instalment", and I'm fine with that. I don't think there's really a single GBV song that communicates the joy of being a GBV song, and that doesn't diminish the GBV experience a jot.

Despite the visual consistency created by Onstad's limitations, there's such a wide variety of tones and approaches within Achewood that I couldn't point to one single chunk without knowing what sort of stuff Chuck does react to.

emil.y, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 15:17 (seven years ago)

Back on Achewood, there was a lot of stuff about the strip that I didn't like, but when I identify with a character I massively over-identify with a character and that def happened w/ Beef.

Achewood was so good, just miles above everything else. I have four small Onstad paintings on my walls. I miss Achewood, and I miss there being any good webcomics at all. The last one I dug was KC Green's HIAGB, but I don't think he's returning to that form any time soon. Back was pretty decent, but that's over now too.

I would really like to read something good, that's not about supernatural teenagers or clumsy manga homage or written by men who like to masturbate to their art.

Sassy Boutonnière (ledriver), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 04:29 (four years ago)
