Good movies dealing with sexism and/or racism?

I've got to watch one and then write an essay for one of my classes. Any suggestions? Most of the big ones (Crash, etc.) have been suggested by my teacher, but I know there's a bunch that her list is missing.

Wait, is the assignment to come up with a movie she hasn't watched and write on it? Or you can watch one that fits the theme that she hasn't suggested, although it would be easier to watch a suggested one, and are looking around for one to impress her with your obscurantism as you continue to put off your homework?

I fail to see how Crash fits the category, but whatever --

(I haven't seen Bamboozled, but it certainly seems like good paper-writing fodder -- nobody zing me on the "good" part)

"Another brick! 'Clang, Clang!' I need, like, a welding torch to play in this league. I'll tell you what: why don't we take all these bricks and build a shelter for the homeless, so maybe your mother will have a place to stay. And your sister too. I want your mother and your sister out of my place immediately"

if she'd allow in Really Good TV Series - season 1 of Prime Suspect for sexism, season 2 for racism

It's more that I've seen most of the movies she listed already and I'd rather watch something I haven't previously seen. I'm looking for her list to post here but I haven't found it yet - my room/belongings are a mess.

the million cogent questions raised by the movie should definitely be salvaged from the chaotic goop that is the movie.

If you can get a copy of Brian DePalma's Hi Mom from 1970 the Be Black, Baby sequence is pretty amazing. It's not especially well integrated into the rest of the movie, but it stands alone just fine. I saw this movie on cable many years ago and was impressed.

river wolf, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

does it have to be about racism specifically, or can it just deal with race relations?

river wolf, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

I would say The Life and Times of Rosie The Riviter for sexism but I don't think it's available in any form. Which is frankly poor.

I presume To Kill A Mockingbird is on the list?

I've never actually seen it, but have heard about it for decades now. It's on my inner Netflix queue.
