Call to N and other research geniuses: can anyone find the text of 'Thine Own Self Is Basically A Ratfink' speech from the end of 'Last Days of Disco'?

It is for a sermon.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

"What if 'thine own self' is pretty bad?"

I can't remember the whole thing, sorry!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

oh, I found a little more: "Do you know that Shakespearean admonition 'To thine own self me true'? It's premised on the idea that 'thine own self' is pretty good, being true to which is commendable. What if 'thine own self' is not so good? What if it's pretty bad? Would it better, in that case. not to be true to 'thine own self'? See? That's my situation."

horseshoe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

I just found the screenplay (not online), and it seems to be only held by one library.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Are you still giving sermons, GP??

Laurel, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure how much of it was adapted, but here's the original novel:

The last days of disco : ǂb with cocktails at Petrossian afterwards : a novel / ǂc by Whit Stillman ; drawings by Pierre Le Tan.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

the novel is a "novelization" of the movie and it came after. I don't think it reproduces the speech, but it might.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

You can read it on Amazon's "look inside" thing - it's pretty much what you posted.

onimo, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

it's a quote mark bonanza!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

I am sad I was not around to rise to this challenge. Bravo, onimo.

Alba, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

I took out the DVD and every word is correct in the horseshoe version. Exact. Thanks for giving me an excuse though, god I love this movie. Best soundtrack ever. Officially.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

i can't remember - do they do air quotes when saying this? i really feel the lines would lose something without the quote marks

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Its all in the tone of voice

I know, right?, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think Des does air quotes, no. were people doing air quotes in the early 80s?

horseshoe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

well probably not but they also weren't wearing those kinds of haircuts, or talking like that, or walking like that, or decorating their apartments like that either so why not?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

i'm surprised this movie didn't have "friends" references in it

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I am still REALLY confused about the Barcelona crossovers in this, leave alone the Metropolitan ones. Which I guess is what happens when you have the same actors in every movie, but only a couple of them are supposed to read as cameos for other-movie characters.

nabisco, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

The only clothing anachronism that springs to mind is Chloe Sevigny's running pants. What, Tracer, were Oxford shirts invented in 1986?

nabisco, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

the crossover is confusing, because one guy appears as both of his other stillman characters - the bible-dancing goody-goody from barcelona and the preppie st. francis from metropolitan (as the latter, he's escorting audrey rouget).

lauren, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

If I ever cross paths with Chris Eigeman again on the streets of New York, I'll bring this up with him.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Thing is, it's Polonius who says the "To thine own self be true" line, and he's full of shit.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

I like the version when he sings that speech to the melody of The Toreador Song.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

This was amazing guys. Thanks!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

omg if you ever cross paths with Chris Eigemann again (so jealous btw!) tell him a crazy internet person proposes marriage!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

the crossover is confusing, because one guy appears as both of his other stillman characters - the bible-dancing goody-goody from barcelona and the preppie st. francis from metropolitan (as the latter, he's escorting audrey rouget).

I always wanted those two to magically be the same mousy guy, but I guess there's no way that works.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

i hear you, but i'm afraid that's impossible.

lauren, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

Here's a funny little interview with CE: http://www.nypost.com/seven/04222007/entertainment/movies/on_a_role_movies_sara_stewart.htm

OMG NOODLE VAGUE IS CHER FROM CLUELESS

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

Usually he is more like the Dan Hedaya character from Clueless.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

My brother-in-law edited that movie.

Maria :D, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

I am still REALLY confused about the Barcelona crossovers in this, leave alone the Metropolitan ones.

The only crossover from Barcelona is Taylor Nichols' character, right? As long as you realize that The Last Days Of Disco takes place before Barcelona, I don't see what's so confusing.

The Yellow Kid, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

That's the 2 best compliments I've had all year.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 06:42 (seventeen years ago)

I prefer the other speech about disco and would like to go to any sermon that used that speech.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 07:31 (seventeen years ago)

How does that speech go?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

yah the disco speech is spicy and juicy and funny and yr like wow thats pretty prescient - oh right the movies from 98. i just watched it last night as inspired by this thread.

sooo gp what are you planning on saying abt that other speech?

jhøshea, Thursday, 11 October 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe I'd be more comfortable with the crossover if Barcelona dude was like "OMG, there is a manager at this club who looks EXACTLY like my brother."

nabisco, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

(Cousin, I mean.)

nabisco, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

That character really took a wrong turn when he started hanging out with Mike Binder on that HBO series.

DISCO WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON IN OUR MINDS AND HEARTS!!!

jhøshea, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

Heheh, that's the one...

"Most of what I said, I believe"

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

"Anything I did that was wrong, I apologize for. ... But anything I did that was *not* wrong, I *don't* apologize for!"
