It's fall! It's almost winter! It's time for the studios to start releasing all their "serious" films!
What are you anticipating, what's good, what deserves doom, etc.
SEEK: Grace Is Gone 3:10 to Yuma The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford Lust, Caution Michael Clayton
DESTROY: Across The Universe Into The Wild In The Valley Of Elah (except a best actor nod for TLJones)

S: There Will Be Blood
― caek, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago)
3:10 to Yuma - The original was a brief, not-bad dramatic excercise. This version, based on runtime, appears to be a bloat. Still, Chris Bale's been on a roll, so he may cancel out Russell Crowe.
My major S is "No Country for Old Men," which is looking like a strong contender for most divisive movie of the year.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:53 (seventeen years ago)
Also, that Denzel Washington "American Gangster" flick looked good to me, then in the ad I saw yesterday it appeared that Rowdy Roddy Piper plays his cop nemesis.
HUH?
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago)
Oh man, I just went to imdb and found out the guy I thought was Rowdy Roddy Piper is actually...
RUSSELL CROWE!
This is the funniest thing to happen to me all day.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
Michael Clayton is PRIME Oscar bait. So are:
[Atonement Rendition Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men

who cares
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:04 (seventeen years ago)
... but The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford will put the heartland to sleep.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:05 (seventeen years ago)
I want to see it, but I guess since I live in "the heartland" I shouldn't bother.

ME SO DUMB
― n/a, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:13 (seventeen years ago)
Don't know if this counts but I can't wait (literally) for My Blueberry Nights.
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
Jesse is not very good no matter where you live

I wanna know what's worth seeing this Fall/Winter. So horrible of me.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
Oscar bait/=worth seeing, in my experience.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago)
Agreed. It's just that time of the year.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:03 (seventeen years ago)
I intended "Oscar Bait" as shorthand for *serious movie times*.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)
It's always "serious movie time," unless you buy your paradigms from publicity whores and conglomerates who sell films like videogames.
I could see Atonement possibly being both good and showered with gold.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:07 (seventeen years ago)
unless you buy your paradigms from publicity whores and conglomerates who sell films like videogames.
Yes, Morbs, I also suck Satan's lizard cock.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:08 (seventeen years ago)
Relax, Hoos. He's only saying that cause he's sure Transformers will be snubbed at nomination time and it makes him mad.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
We Own the Night
I hate Wahlberg, have seen plenty of "crime epics" this year and am tired of having Joaquin Phoenix shoved down my throat, but I kinda wanna see this.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:15 (seventeen years ago)
I never get tired of crime epics, and kinda like both those actors, despite "Shooter" and "Gladiator"
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
Gone Baby Gone
I love the shit out Dennis Lehane and am curious to see how Affleck handles a camera.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
The guy who made We Own the Night also did The Yards with Wahlberg (who was super) and Phoenix, which had many good things in it but just didn't quite take off. So this has promise, maybe.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:24 (seventeen years ago)
The wiki for "Shooter" makes it look like Marine/sniper porn. Ew.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:24 (seventeen years ago)
Pretty much. See my comments in the "bullshit movies you've seen more than once for some stupid reason" thread.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago)
Before the Devil Knows Your Dead
I totally want Lumet to come out swinging, I've got a soft spot for Ethan Hawke (sorry), and I'll see anything Phillip Seymour Hoffman touches.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago)
Sweeney Todd
Musical. Period piece. Burton & Depp. It's gonna look great at least.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago)
I am a Burton Hata. Which is really unfortunate for me, cause I like Depp a lot.
I think Depp and the Coen boys would be a natch match, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards.

probably the closest we will ever get to a Depp-Coen flick.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:49 (seventeen years ago)
As a kinda-Beatles fan I wanna kill it. xpost
I love William Blake, and Nobody, and Bob Mitchum looking grizzly.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:50 (seventeen years ago)
I was about to say "I would love for the Coens to make a Western," then I realized that we kinda are getting a Western with No Country.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago)
Isn't somebody making Blood Meridian, too?
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago)
Adaptations
A film adaptation written by William Monahan is scheduled for release in 2009, to be directed by Ridley Scott.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 21:00 (seventeen years ago)
From the director of Hannibal, Gladiator, and Matchstick Men!
