I know pregnant women and sometimes, women on their period, who have told me that their sense of smell feels like it has been turned up to eleven, but unless I am very much mistaken and suffering from a dire lack of self knowledge, I am neither pregnant nor menstruating, yet for the past two days, I have been encountering a bewildering and sometimes terrifying array of scents from the sublime to the abjectly fetid. Certain things seem to smell more clearly and some more strongly or at least they seem to affect me more. Do you ever go through periods of hyperosmia?

I am experiencing one this week, actually.
Unfortunately, one of its first discoveries = homeless man wiping ass with shorts after crapping behind next column

For nine months now I have been smelling diapers. This is partially reality (because of Ophelia), partially a look into the future but most of all the fact I am indeed pregnant. Otherwise, when I'm not pregnant, my smell is rather mediocre tbh. :-(

Did you start picking your nose?
Also, I think everything smells smellier in autumn. Dry air = less humidity "watering" down smells, mayhaps? Or dampening them? No pun intended; the smell of "rain" is really just an amalgam of all of the smells around you because of the rain, I remember reading.

Every shampoo, every cologne, every polyurethane-type thing, every bit of halitosis or body odor... Last night I picked my cat to snuggle and she suddenly smelled like the best thing ever! It's been so odd.
― Michael White, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
Your cat smells good? That's fucked up.
― Will M., Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:49 (seventeen years ago)
This only happened to me when I was pregnant, and almost every smell nauseated me. It sounds like it's not that unpleasant for you, so you are super lucky!
PS - I'm with Will M. - your cat smells that good?! Weird!

I am a Werewolf
― Jordan, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:50 (seventeen years ago)
You are not a werewolf I am a Werewolf I am a Werewolf
That's fucked up.
I love her so her smell is always a comfort but it smelled like happiness yesterday.
It sounds like it's not that unpleasant for you, so you are super lucky!
When it's vile it's really vile but when it's nice, it's exqusite and smells seem to be jumping out from the background which is, frankly, just kind of weird.

i don't feel like going @ work but if it still exists, www.werejournal.com (it should be safe for work, it's jsut livejournals SPECIFICALLY for people who think they are were-something)
― Will M., Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago)
I should pay attention to the migraine - smell connection but I am usually too busy crawling into a black pit to notice. :-( Like now.
― stevienixed, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago)
RIP werejournal :(
― Jordan, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
Were-anemone? Were-wombat? Were-flea?
Isn't the 'were' in werewolf and weregeld related to 'vir' (as in 'virile') in Latin?
sorry to hear that, stevienixed

does anyone else ever get smells "stuck" in their nose? like the way a song gets stuck in your head? happens to me with rubbing alcohol, weed, a few others I can't recall at the moment; after being around them for a little while, they keep returning, seemingly at random, for the next few days.
― bernard snowy, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago)
bleach is another one. and certain growth media.
― bernard snowy, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:00 (seventeen years ago)
Ah yes, the weed smell. Alas all too often. :-(
― stevienixed, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

― bernard snowy, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

i have very obtuse olfaction
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago)
'Wer' means man and 'vir' means man, though I'm not sure of the history of this etymology... I'm guessing as they're so similar they must be from the same root, and it would seem logical that 'vir' came first, but aside from that I don't know.
― emil.y, Thursday, 11 October 2007 00:38 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I get the bleach thing bad - I did heavy spring cleaing last weekend and now, 5 days later, I can still taste it in the back of my throat, when I have a cig especially for some reason. Urgh.
― Trayce, Thursday, 11 October 2007 01:05 (seventeen years ago)
Strong bleach smells stick with me and ruin cigarettes for at least a half day.
