I really like these pictures, and I really like this idea.

It is a shame there is 0 chance these folks aren't assholes.

lol "assholes"

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

I can think of a few people I know who would prob take to that life pretty well, at least temporarily -- I mean, traveling the world and getting crap jobs in different cities as an adventure isn't much different -- sleeping inside of walls without holes in them seems like a big deal to me but really having no safety net is the more significant extreme. Well, "extreme" to those of us with parents and day jobs and friends with money or whatever.

Personally, though, I need to be showered and fresh at all times.

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

recently there was a thread about a woman who had written a book flipping out about 'travelers' (they survive by ABUSE and VIOLENCE and LURE TEENS AWAY FROM HOME) but i can't remember her name or the name of the book.

gff, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

what's with all the pictures of american indie rockers?

max r, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

they are smelly, filthy, probably on meth/booze, lost, damaged hippies

but i still want to hang with them. like, bad? nb - for whatever reason, i knew at least 3 people at dmouth that did that for a while. and bridget has a buddy from princeton that still does the hobo thing every now and then

clean em up a bit = your average college kid

max r, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

i bet if i introduced myself by my screenname they'd be like "wait, have i met you already?"

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

this is what 1/2 my friends from high school look like now

max, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

Do I want to be homeless and dirty and unsafe and cold and hungry on purpose just to remind myself how to live in the world/recalibrate my perspective? Not really. But the people I know who have a grasp of husting/getting by are some of my favorites and their point of view is v good for me.

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

One of my top bros S3th once hopped a FREIGHT TRAIN to the RAINBOW GATHERING.

Also: lol @ rw

dan m, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

well yeah, chances are very decent that at least a handful of these ARE "average" college kids, out slumming for a bit. many of them probably not.

the west is full of actual hobos, like dudes that have been doing this for years. my buddy and i befriended one in aspen, co, of all places, and he told us that they had a camp outside of town they moved every now and then (cops), and that most of them had totally separate lives (wives, kids, jobs) before going hobo (ie - they were not from Circumstances, necessarily).

xp omg the rainbow gathering. that should be it's own thread!

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

i think this is a kind of left-wing version of ruby ridge: absolute off-the-grid-ness as a consuming ideal but with "private property" filed under babylon

gff, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

people HATE the rainbow gathering. HATE IT.

i've always sort of wanted to go, just to bear witness.

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

and really, lifestyle aside, these pics are fucking gorgeous. that first esp.

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

the thing abt these kids is that theyre really fun and terrific in high school but three or four years down the road a lot of them just get sort of boring and narcissistic and self-righteous

max, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

ok "gorgeous" isn't the word, but whatever.

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

otm re: self-righteous.

c.f. thru-hikers

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

and i LIKE thru-hikers!

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

They (rainbo gatherers) showed up in the UP once, it's a LOT of hippies.

The people I know who've done the hobo thing are about 60% college kids and 40% vagabond dirtbag punkers.

dan m, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

I could never get into it whenever any of them left on some excursion, I had a job.

dan m, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

Some people in being cool, some in being jerks shockah! I like to think it makes one ingenious, resourceful, scrappy, and pretty okay with any fluctuating level of "worldly" "success". Like when you've been hungry for a while, just being able to grocery shop is like winning the lottery.

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

I hung out with thru-hikers once or twice. I felt like they didn't like us. :(

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

One of them called me out for addressing them as "ladies".

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

ahahahaha

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

i've always sort of wanted to go, just to bear witness

otm

jergïns, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

though i know of the act, i'd never heard the term 'thru-hiker' until today. some friends--decdiely not assholes, just hardcore outdoorsy tyles--have done the whole of the PCH. i wouldn't say i'm jealous, but def respectful

jergïns, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

three or four years down the road a lot of them just get sort of boring and narcissistic and self-righteous

cross that out and write in scabby and desperate and permanently changed maybe not in a good way. that's the more likely outcome, from what i've seen

jergïns, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

you mean PCT? my friend mike did that a few year's ago. pretty quickly, too! but PCT thru-hikers are a different breed than the appalachian trail thru-hikers (which is who I really meant). PCT is the real-deal, and very long and very remote and hard. the AT gets a lot more amateurs/self-righteous hippies.

i'm jealous! i wanna do it!

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

haha yeah not pacific coast highway (that walk would SUCK) but pacific coast trail. they had food pick-ups along the way. VERY well-planned. they maybe didn't do the last 50 or so miles in socal.

jergïns, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I was on the AT as well. It's MEANT to go through towns and not leave civilization for more than a few days at a time, but I guess, yeah, that means lots of people can front, do not have to subsume self into wilderness to make it.

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

jerg i think it depends on how deep u get into the "lifestyle"; i do have friends who've become weird shadows of their former selves but way more who've dipped in and out (6-8 mos on the road, then 1 mo at home living with parents or, uh, on my couch and eating my food) and act like mystical buddhist shamans or some bullshit... obv this is all anecdotal

max, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i've seen that side of it too for sure

jergïns, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

if we count "on the road" (like hitching and/or living out yr pickup), then i know literally dozens of people that have done that for months at a time, but w/o turning into like scabby meth heads or self-righteous dicks

e.g. ski bums, climbing bums, etc.

river wolf, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

a guy i knew (not that well) in college, _______, hitched from WA to NH for his freshman year of college. interesting in and of itself, i guess, but _____ has a facial condition that makes his face completely unable to express emotion (like, the muscles don't work....can't smile, frown, etc), which must have made picking up rides, uh, difficult

just fyi

Good to see she hasn't forgotten the irony that got her here.

Jeff, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

way too many facial tattoos/reverse mohawks on these ppl.

max, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

I wanted to look like this so, so, so bad in high school but my mom kept making me take baths and dress in an acceptable-for=seminary fashion.

The whole....this...thing always seemed really romantic to me then. I was hanging out at Denny's with buds and sneaking over to other tables to eat unfinished entrees, getting showers at the gym, pulling apples out of trash cans for "practice" when I was sixteen. But having to actually live that life is a humiliating hell, I learned later when I had to live that life to a certain extent. There's this thing called Maslow's heirarchy of human needs...

hot sauce and bananas is good tho

jhøshea, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

I'm intrigued.

Jeff, Thursday, 11 October 2007 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

By hot sauce and bananas, not crusty hipsters.

Jeff, Thursday, 11 October 2007 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

I need to believe that 'possum's for the dog.

nickn, Thursday, 11 October 2007 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

These pictures really are amazingly beautiful. As for the actual content, well, I don't know these people, I don't know their reasons for doing what they're doing, but I do get an immense 'slumming it' hipster vibe. And whilst a large part of me would love to experience life the way they look like they do, another part of me is wanting to scream STOP BEING SO PATRONISING MOTHERFUCKERS in their faces. But, to reiterate, pictures = great.

emil.y, Thursday, 11 October 2007 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

I was unsure whether this was hipster slumming or grown-up-middle-class kids with some kind of social disaffection (not sure if that's the term I'm looking for, the kind of thing that keeps people from holding jobs/going to school very long but milder than being a sociopath), but the face tattoos lead me to think the latter.

They are good photographs. I'd like to see a documentary.

nickn, Thursday, 11 October 2007 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

those chicks are nast gnar gnar

chaki, Thursday, 11 October 2007 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

in high school my best friend got in a fight with his parents and moved out, telling everyone that he was living in a tent in the woods, when in fact he was spending 5 nights a week at my house and only sometimes visiting his tent (which had in it a sleeping bag and a stack of porn)

max, Thursday, 11 October 2007 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

PCT is the real-deal, and very long and very remote and hard. the AT gets a lot more amateurs/self-righteous hippies.

I've been following this guy's blog: http://pct2007.org/
He just finished a through-hike of the PCT
