Who will make me a really good non-musical ringtone (actually two - one for calls and one for text messages)?

I don't like tunes for ringtones, partly because they sound a bit rubbish and partly because I don't hear them nearly as clearly in a noisy environment as a clean sound designed to attract attention.

But I don't want the standard old "ring ring" of a traditional phone either as too many other people have it, which is confusing. CTU ringtone from 24 was great for a while, but now that's played out too.

I need my own ring that I will know is mine! Is that too much ask? I have looked online and can only find shit.

And then there's the text message alert to consider. That's maybe even more important. Has to be super-short and probably high-pitched. I actually like the default ones on my Sony Ericsson K750i, but too many people around even my office have them for it not to be confusing. I was especially fond of the one that sounds like a robot whistling for your attention.

I tried making my own with GarageBand, but it's harder than I thought to make something good.

MP3 or, ideally, midi format, I guess.

Who will help me?

(my GarageBand attempt resulted in me making a text alert out of the Close Encounters five-note tune, but even that is inappropriately long and tuney for prolonged use)

A year or two ago I found a sound effects web site that lets you listen to samples of every sound effect they own (which run into the tens of thousands). They're lo-fi samples but fine for a cellie, and a little creative URL/source code hacking revealed the mp3s. I'll try to find it.

Thanks Tracer. I've found similar sites before but that one is better. I found a good metallic sound I've been playing around with in Audacity.

Thanks Jed. I love the Alvanoto ones. Just the kind of thing I wanted. More people should be making these kind of sounds!

actually on tracer's recommended site i only listened to axe and battle sounds. the axe ones were poor but that's to be expected.

I only listened to ones in the Electronic sounds section, some of which were good.

Chaki - I get a blank page with Lynch.

Heave Ho - I could never hear that!

I will admit to guffawing when I heard someone who had the classic Nokia ringtone on their phone that, at the very end, went beeeeuuuuuuurrrrrrt as if it had just run out of batteries or something.

re: those alva noto ones, the grime artiste jme put a special ringtone up for download on his myspace recently, for his fans, and it was one of those super high frequency mosquito ones that only kids can hear? but done up as one of his classic riddims i think. (could barely make it out myself.)

still tho, the future eh
