I haven't read a word. Whatever. I'd love to hear recommendations (I know, I know -- read The Golden Notebook), dismissals, reactions to the Nobel Prize and Harold Bloom's remarks, etc.

Like I muttered on my blog, the Canopus in Argos sequence. Immensely affecting stuff to read as a teen sf fan.

i like lessing and its good to see a writer who willingly admits to being a sci-fi writer get a big prize (altho is sci-fi really that ghettoized anymore? i dont know that lessings new-agey brand is, particularly)... on the other hand, and i know this isnt an original thought, the nobel prize doesn't seem to mean a whole lot (and never really has), less for the writers who its included (all of whom strike me as fairly worthy of some sort of prize, with a few exceptions) as for those whove been passed over (joyce? borges??)--that being said obviously any prize is going to generate controversy but awarding it based on "bodies of work" rather than specific texts strikes me as sort of asking for it.
but really the bottom line is that anything that pisses off harold bloom i am in favor of.

The Fifth Child and Ben, In the World are two of my favorites of hers. I never made it through The Golden Notebook.

Read The Golden Notebook last year and found lots of it to be very contemporary. I suppose the particular political situation is dated but a lot of that stuff is still with us in some shape so I focus on that.
Def reading more from her this year.
This is a piece from Jenny Dinski, whom Doris took care of:
