nobel peace prize laureates all

and the answer is no he is not going to run for president because he got the peace prize

wingnut backlash etc goes here!

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

has anyone ever actually deserved this prize? apart from MLK and i don't know gandhi assuming he got it

J.D., Friday, 12 October 2007 10:08 (seventeen years ago)

Gore totally deserves it! (And so does the IPCC)

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

Gandhi didn't get one. The organisations tend to be better choices than the individuals - Red Cross, MSF, Amnesty etc.

dowd, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

gandhi never got it because he was not a real politician or a humanitarian relief worker which also boils down to he was on the wrong side of the world during the years he was nominated

teddy roosevelt has one too

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

roosevelt got one for brokering an end to the russo-japanese war, i think.

woodrow wilson got one, for the league of nations.

J.D., Friday, 12 October 2007 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

if gandhi had ended a war instead of just never starting one, maybe

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:35 (seventeen years ago)

this is the thread where ILX will spend friday deconstructing and discrediting the nobel peace prize

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

in response to somebody generally respected by ILX receiving one in conjunction with an organization that ILX nearly all agrees with

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:37 (seventeen years ago)

Menachem Begin

Tom D., Friday, 12 October 2007 10:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah in 1947 instead of giving it to gandhi they gave it to the quakers. awesome.

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

Willy Brandt deserved his prize

Tom D., Friday, 12 October 2007 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

you can just keep going back to the trough every decade or so if you remember to not actually stop fighting! cf israelis/arabs, ireland/uk

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

When was Ireland fighting the UK?

Tom D., Friday, 12 October 2007 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sorry, whatever country that flag represents, the jack something

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

don't forget Aung San Suu Kyi, still under house arrest in Burma with no telephone - won it in 1991

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

Money-making scheme: start a war + broker peace deal = $1.5m

Upt0eleven, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

actually i think most of the winners are pretty worthy.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/13/world/13nobel.html

Mr. Gore, who was traveling in San Francisco, said in a statement that he was deeply honored to receive the prize. "I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize," he said in the statement, Reuters reported.

Guh.

caek, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

caek quoted the nytimes report that Mr Gore said in a statement that he was deeply honored to receive the prize. "I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace price," he said in the statement, caek quoted the nytimes' report that Reuters reported.

Great thread title.

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

someone blog about the last two posts please

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

xpost

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

The New York Times has to rely on Reuters for the text of a prepared statement about winning the Nobel Prize?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

and the answer is no he is not going to run for president because he got the peace prize

Why? Not that I disagree with you, I am just willfully ignorant.

caek, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

Also, now we have polls we should totally have an ILX Person of the Year thing.

caek, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

I was just pre-empting some speculation. that'll be 30%+ of the coverage and editorializing today in the MSM I imagine, despite it already having been beat to death in the brief lead-up

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

El Tomboto urged coverage of caek's quotation of a New York Times report, which reported that Mr. Gore said in a statement that he was deeply honored to receive the prize. "I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize," the New York Times said Reuters reported he said in the statement.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

Hit the jump for more redundancy

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

Gore-bel is not running for president.

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

is there a way we could start incorporating "hit the jump" into spoken conversation?

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

outside a double black?

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

xpost, yeah, but what are your reasons? I mean, my first thought when I heard the news was, that is surprising. My second was, that makes him more likely to run for president. It would seem that it does make it more likely that he run, to first order, since people are likely to be more positively disposed to him, right? I am doubtless missing many things.

caek, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

he's more likely to run yes but he won't.

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:13 (seventeen years ago)

Would American voters really be that impressed by someone who won the Nobel Peace Prize? I'm guessing not.

Tom D., Friday, 12 October 2007 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

xpost, yes. He still actually talks like that NYT quote, I suppose.

caek, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

if I were Al Gore, and I had just won the peace prize, I personally would be thinking about how everything turned out just right after all, and that I found my niche, and hopefully it's not all downhill from here.

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

lol at the concept that American voters give a shit about any of the Nobel Prizes when it comes to their bearing on presidential candidates

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

Tombot OTFM.

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

that's a key reason why Al isn't gonna run.

on Cuban talk radio this morning: "all Al Gore needs to top an incredible year is an infidelity accusation by The National Inquirer."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

So - Al Gore is one of, if not the, most influential person in bringing about the internet AND the single person most responsible for raising awareness about global warming?

We need to set this guy to work on some more practical, everyday stuff:

- Potato chip bags that keep chips fresh, but don't threaten to split wide open past a certain amount of power put into the opening effort
- Bartenders who let you get your money's worth
- Collar stays that you don't lose

Al Gore is too big picture. I need more micro, less macro from my Tennessean Savior

B.L.A.M., Friday, 12 October 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

What the fuck? I am so confused. Did people REALLY NOT KNOW ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING BEFORE NOW? I remember reading kids' books in the 80s about Global Warming, ferchrissakes.

Will M., Friday, 12 October 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

No Will, everyone knew about it then, which is why so much preventative action has been taken in the years since. The fact that someone talking about global warming would win this award when the major countries of the world have put so much economic, political, and scientific energy into the eradication of the predicted environmental disaster is just laughable.

G00blar, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

it was the 80s, people didn't read things

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

you hadda be careful back then, there was that big READS epidemic.

i don't have a problem with Gore getting it at all.

darraghmac, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Still seems weird that Gore gets one now, and Carter only got one like 5 years earlier. Ho long was Carter making the world neato for? And for contrast, how long ago did Gore's movie hit DVD?

Will M., Friday, 12 October 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

czech yo'self:

Czech President Vaclav Klaus, a rare vocal global- warming sceptic among heads of state, is "somewhat surprised" that former US vice president Al Gore received the Nobel Peace Prize, the president's spokesman Petr Hajek said in a statement.

"The relationship between his activities and world peace is unclear and indistinct," the statement said. "It rather seems that Gore's doubting of basic cornerstones of the current civilization does not contribute to peace."

Gore wrote an entire book about global warming in 1992. Did you guys know that?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 October 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

here's the brief statement I got from his email list:

Dear jeremy,

I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This award is even more meaningful because I have the honor of sharing it with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change--the world's pre-eminent scientific body devoted to improving our understanding of the climate crisis--a group whose members have worked tirelessly and selflessly for many years. We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.

My wife, Tipper, and I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the award to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization that is devoted to changing public opinion in the U.S. and around the world about the urgency of solving the climate crisis.

Thank you,

Al Gore

I like how except for "NELLY'S COUNTRY GRAMMAR ROCKS THE NATION" absolutely nothing on that cover gives you any idea when it might have been published. Like, you can mark out something like ten years where it would have seemed a more or less good idea.

Maybe Gore was given the price for raising global warming consciousness in the US though? I mean, it's still the biggest contributor to global warming, yet thanks to Bush they withdrew from the Kyoto Agreement, even though Clinton had already signed it.

Other than Kissinger, Adams, and Arafat, I'm pretty sure there's not a Peace Prize winner more controversial (or, y'know, "wrong").

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 13 October 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty much everyone who ever won the prize was "controversial" to someone at some point. (Remember the Rigoberta Menchu scandal?) The "incrementalists" at the National Review who bitched about MLK Jr. winning were just an earlier (& slightly more literate) version of the corporate-funded wingnuts bitching about Gore winning.

mulla atari, Saturday, 13 October 2007 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

Oh well, I guess the Nobel Prize is doing that inevitable cheapening of itself. Next year: K-Fed, for taking those kids from that terrible Britney!

Will M., Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

I'm really not sure how you can call it "inevitable cheapening" as if this is somehow a huge oversight on par with giving the prize to the Quakers instead of Gandhi or something. They did that in 1947
