I did 3 static line jumps back in the dark ages, to get myself around what I thought was a fear of heights. My first jump was only the second time I'd been up in a plane. It was scary and hard the first time, harder the second time though less scary, and almost enjoyable the third time.

what are static line jumps?
the first time my friend did his jump, the crew are videotaping you as you suit up and load into the plane and also of course as you jump and as you're falling. and then they run up to you after you land and the camera gets all in your face and they ask "so how it was it DUDE" and they tape your corny reaction and then they add techno music to it and you get to take home a free DVD of it

i want to do this just so when they do the reaction shot thing i can anticipate it and force myself to act all super bored and DEVASTATE THEIR ENTIRE INSTITUTION

I wouldn't really want a DVD of me shitting myself.

why not

For static line, there's a webbing strap that clips to something inside the plane, then a velcro bit on the far end hooks to the top of the chute. You jump out and the strap pulls the chute out for you, so you don't have to pull the rip cord on the pack.
I don't know if they do this anymore. I also jumped with an old army issue chute, out of an old WWII fighter plane, into a cornfield.

Do they make you ride underneath some dude on your first time? Because I'd want to be all free and solo and everything.
― Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 13 October 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
Static line is a solo jump. Here you go, sort of in your backyard: http://www.skyranch.com/HomePage.html
No cowboy boots, no red shirts.

PP, I think most places strongly suggest you do a tandem for your first jump. And you don't "ride" underneath some strange dude, you fall underneath him.
I'm about 30 minutes from that SkyRanch place. I should go fall underneath some dude there.

So what do you do with a skydiver's license besides falling tandem with some n00b?
― Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 13 October 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)
xp
I have jumped once, a tandem. it was awesome. for the first -- I dunno, felt like first 30 seconds but probably wasn't that long, I totally couldn't breathe, it took me a while to wrap my head around what I was seeing / experiencing. but when I snapped out of it it was great.

rrrrrrrobyn taking into consideration how much sense an activity makes before you do it is not really very EXTREME
― iiiijjjj, Sunday, 14 October 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)
no it is not EXTREEEMME it is maybe not a thing i am into yet/now i like skiing/snowboarding and i like swimming/surfing in the pacific in wintertime and i like rockclimbing non-insane rocks but those things make no sense either i guess but also they are not high in the sky which is v far away from the earth
EXTREME things kind of make me really angry! maybe i need to be an EXTREME FIGHTER!
