Ebay: Cash Cow or Evil Bitch?

Does anyone else go on Ebay just cos they're bored and then just all of a sudden go absolutely bitchcakes bidding on things? All of a suddenly lately I have this habit if I go on "just to see what's out there!" I start bidding on everything that appeals to me. I just bid like $800 worth of bids on LPs and an autographed Manics single. WTF?

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never bid on e-bay, I'm kinda unsure of how it works. But, I do enjoy doing searches for casiotone keyboards, does anyone know if it's true that there is a casio vocoder?...I know alot of people really dig e-bay...it's a cash cow, but how does e-bay itself make any money?

james e l, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't know the mechanics but ebay is fucking coining it in. No.1 e- commerce site in known universe etc. etc. Tiresome for me in a professional sense as there's only so much you can write about it. Pretty much the definition of Cash Cow.

Best ever fake e-bay auctions? Runner-Up: Monkey Phone Call (plus transcript). Winner: Thom Yorke, because the seller name was "Thomspimp".

Tom, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've bid and sold. I've gotten screwed, too. I'm glad nobody I sold to just decided to lie and claim I never sent it. I had to complain about some cds I never got, which were apparantly "lost in the mail" and I couldn't help feeling that maybe they really werelost and the seller thought I was trying to rip her off. However, I doubt it. I think the items were re-auctioned by the same bitch. Not sure why she'd bother, but she had 400+ positive feedback comments compared to my 2, so it's not like my negative feedback hurt her any. If you get dicked on Ebay, there's nothing you can really do.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like selling shit. I made a couple grand from selling on there a year or two ago. Sold mostly crappy rare CDs and Weezer memorabilia. One time I bought an awful PJ Harvey bootleg for $5 from some starving bastard in South Africa and sold it on eBay for $200.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come and start bidding on mine please...I need the cash.

In answer to the question, I started using eBay's UK site last year which had a trial period of free listings at the time. When they introduced listing fees I moved over to Yahoo (which is completely free), but the truth is there is very little traffic there so I'm currently completely addicted to selling stuff on eBay. I waste more time there checking if I've got new bids than I do here checking for new posts.

David, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate ebay, because it's too addictive for me: I'm too competitive, and will get really pissed if I get outbid on something. I will even bid on other things that person is bidding on to drive the price up OUT OF SPITE. However, it is really the only good source for obscure sanrio and san-x stuff, so I'm not likely to give it up anytime soon.

Nicole, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know alot of people really dig e-bay...it's a cash cow, but how does e-bay itself make any money?

Through raking off small fees at every conceivable turn. Each listing costs 0.21 USD, then there are charges on options like 'featured auctions', 'bold', 'gallery' etc. etc. Then if the item sells it's a minimum of 5% of the selling price to eBay.

David, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, David, I'd totally bid on your shit if you had, say, autographed photos of the Manics up there, but I don't see that anywhere. You do have the Love Will Tear Us Apart 7", but since I only hang vinyl on my walls, it'd need better cover art for me to buy it. *sigh* I totally looked though, let me know if you have something I'd like with kick ass cover art and I'll bid.

Nicole: I do that too, bidding out of spite. Cos I totally know someone will outbid me, and they'll have to spend way more than what I bid. It's great.

But I hate auctions that end in the middle of the night, wtf is that about? I bid on the Motown Junk 12" and the auction got stolen from me at the last minute because I was too busy drinking with Otis and Ramon to do something as weak as get online and check my bid. They literally stole it out from under me at the last second. I knew I should've put in max bid $10,000 because who the hell would've drove it up that far, duh.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh. I used it once. I didn't win my auction. It was a disappointment. I just wanna buy a Bark Psychosis CD for a reasonable price and not have to fuck around.

Josh, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David: I just bid £5 each for the CD of Tiger Bay (I only have the album on cassette, frustratingly: therefore it's my favourite Saint Etienne album with the lowest sound quality), the Shoot magazine from 1971 (hey, it's 18 years older than *my* old copies of Shoot), and the 1956 Sea Story Omnibus. I love this kind of thing (I cherish my News Chronicle I-Spy Annual from the mid-50s) and I've seen similar books from the 50s selling for stupid amounts - sometimes up to £50 - in small, snobby shops aiming at the collectors' market.

So that should ease your cashflow :).

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Robin, but if you are at all spam-phobic I would advise you to change your user id to something other than your actual email address...ie a pseudonym.

David, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did. I gave "RobinCarmody" as my ID (I actually joined up over a year ago but never took part in anything), but for whatever reason they continually refused it. So I went with "robin@elidor.freeserve.co.uk" against my will, but it was all they would accept, it seemed.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on, you can come up with better fake names than your REAL name and then your email address, man!

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Next time I put in a bid on Ebay, therefore, I will be:

"Captain Swing"

It has the perfect combination of 19th Century British countryside revolt and what sounds like the name of some early 1990s German Eurorap type, but isn't. I like that.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Captain Swing also souunds like a really bad porn name. That has to be worth bonus points.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think there *is* actually some sort of British folk band with that very name ...

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I kind of see the early 90's Euro-Dance connection, but can you fill me in on the 19th century UK countryside revolt connotation?

David, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

indeed there is robin: http://freespace.virgin.net/mike.griffiths/cswing.html

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was thinking of Captain Hollywood (who had a few hits here) and Captain Jack (who didn't). Someone in the Turbo B vein, at any rate.

Steve: thanks for the link, the Captain Swing Band are actually playing at the Tolpuddle rally in July, which is how I got to hear of them. David: the countryside revolt connotations are explained on another page from that site: http://freespace.virgin.net/mike.griffiths/cscd001.html. Captain Swing was originally a mythical character who was invoked and celebrated by those whose riots led to the 1832 Reform Act, and so heavily connected to Chartism, the Tolpuddle Martyrs etc.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re: best fake Ebay auction, screw that Thom Yorke noise. (I mean, I'll contest Tom's claim if I do so dare. ahem.) If I'm rightly recalling, someone clever person managed to get the entire province of Quebec listed for a few days. The rest of Canada thought that was pretty cool. I believe there was also a human soul for sale once... and if I'm making that up, I'd be surprised, because someone really *should* have done it.

Kim, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am wholly surprised none of you have mentioned this site yet.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not mentioned it cause I've never been. Sites like that (& TV Cream etc. too) take the fun out of things.

Tom, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The soul up for auction was Moby's. IIRC, the person who put it up was an ex-associate of our favourite lame-ass techno-hardcore-blues- roots artist, who felt slighted by him in some way. The sales pitch was something along the lines of: "he sold his soul to rover, (insert list of advertisers who used moby muzik) now you can own it too!!!

Norman Fay, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just wanna buy a Bark Psychosis CD for a reasonable price and not have to fuck around

Try Tower Records online. That's where I bought my copy not too long ago.

JC, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I put up my first auction on there a few days ago, and sold my old almost-complete collection of Star Hits magazines for 220 US $, woo- hoo ! No bids yet on my much smaller Smash Hits collection though. I could probably make more money selling issues individually, but I can't be bothered.

Patrick, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, I know this is supposed to against the rules of Ebay and all, but how much would you take for yer collection of Smash Hits, Patrick? And what years does it cover?

As an even sadder side note, I must note that I'm totally psyched about winning the Tarepanda kitchen timer.

Nicole, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An e-mail is on your way, Nicole. Weird, I didn't know this was against Ebay's rules.

Patrick, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They have a lot of archaic rules, one of which is that you're not supposed to arrange for a private sale of something you have placed on ebay, because then they don't get their commission. I don't suppose they're reading this though, surely they have bigger fish to fry.

Nicole, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't let this thread go by without crowing about the one sale I ever made on eBay: a 4-track Andy Partridge EP-CD, released on John Flansburgh's Hello Record Club imprint. There are some fanatical XTC fans out there.

It went for about $450 U.S.

Amazing, right? Even better: I never paid eBay one red cent. And I've never tried to buy or sell anything there again.

BrianR, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Kerching!" as Martin Crane wld say

Andrew L, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have bid on about $8 trillion (approx) worth of Manics merchandise. What the fuck? Thank god I didn't find Ebay when I was 15 for crying out loud.

The problem is, I really want to make one wall of my bedroom entirely musical memorabilia, just like one wall of my living room is going to be entirely embarassing and/or ridiculous snap shots of friends. It's a theme thing. Ebay is helping with the music theme, but for god's sake, like I need to spend $70 on the Motown Junk 12"

Ally, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone should dedicate one wall of their bedroom to something. One half of my bedroom is nothing but Red Sox memoribilia. The other half is He-Man action figures and Britney Spears posters.

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i got a friend who buys loads on ebay, like records by the stairs and shit, and i'm like wtf? i'll get you that for 49p from the shop at the end of my street.

gareth, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I like having themes in my apartment. Embarassing pictures on one wall, the music memorabilia on my bedroom wall (though that amounts to one picture at this point, though I do have the Slash & Burn, You Love Us, and Motown Junk 12" all on the way, plus a really nice signed photo that a friend got me), with the tying thing on ALL walls my crazy French advertisements. I really have to start working on this bedroom though, I mean everything else is moving along nicely, I've slacked on fixing up my bedroom.

Hey, Otis, wanna come down the Thursday before the Washington trip and you and Ramon take me to Long Island to go buy doors for my bedroom?

Ally, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the two ULTIMATE pieces of Manics memorabilia (judged by the fact no-one mentions them): Two interviews in games magazines, one from the Feb '92 issue of Sega Power ("Why are video games so popular at the moment?" Richey:"Because the bourgeoisie love their toys"), the other from a 1993 issue of Gamesmaster. And I'm not selling! Ha ha!

DG, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the actual photocopied flier for the first show they played in England (I wuz there!) somewhere. It's great, it has Subway Sect lyrics on it and stuff. Although I may have lost it somewhere along the way. The tape of the interview my mate Tim and I did with Richey just before "Generation Terrorists" came out must exist somewhere too, I suppose. Unless it doesn't.

Tim, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fer god's sake, everyone knows about the Manics' Sega obsession. I actually think I've read one of those.

Are you people trying to taunt me into offering you money?

Ally, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got a copy of Amiga Action or something where a half-naked Geri Halliwell is a character who's a witch or something and gives you cheats for games. I've got a shitload of Manics bootlegs (not like b- sides and shit - proper stuff that's not been released on CD like the one from Huddersfield where they play "Faceless Sense Of Void" twice because they fuck it up the first time. £10 the lot, buyer collects.

Greg, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

) - that's missing from somewhere in there

Greg, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Weren't you supposed to send me MP3s of that stuff? For free? Greg? ;)

(will still pay the money anyhow, god this is awful)

Ally, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Forgot to mention that the auction doesn't start till 21:00 GMT.

Ed (dali), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Have I ever said how I hate the fact that auctions always end outside of 9-5 good honest peoples working time so I ALWAYS END UP LOSING?!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have calculated that since I want to sell this to musicians the best thing to do is have it finish at around 9 in the evening. I still lose auctions at this time but the prices seem to be higher when I do so I'm hoping as a seller I'll win.

Ed (dali), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would musicians want an invalid? (Haha)

Sarah (starry), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

s1ocki, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

I try to have my auctions end Sun-Thurs night around 7pm Pacific. So put it on tonight as a ten-day auction for an extra dime or wait a couple of days.

milo z, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

you think about things that much? if it's something someone wants, I don't think it matters

akm, Saturday, 19 May 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

There are more people apt to be looking at the close of an auction around 5-10pm on a weeknight than there are at noon or 7 in the morning or on a Saturday.

Lately I've been selling things that have multiples on Ebay, it would matter even less for rare items I guess.

Does anyone else snipe? I used to use justsnipe, but it's now down to 1 free snipe per week, which isn't much good. Is there anything better out there?

toby, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

No, it takes away all the fun and spoils it for the rest who don't use it.

StanM, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

I take your point to some extent, but unfortunately I live in a different country to the one where I need to buy my jeans, and getting up at 3am to bid on them isn't much fun either...

toby, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

i use snipe all the time. "fun"? "spoils"? it's not a fucking sport.

electricsound, Saturday, 1 March 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

I thought sniping was basically required at this point to win anything

El Tomboto, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

i do sometimes like to do a manual snipe just to keep my chops.. 10 seconds before the end..

electricsound, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Actually for the things I tend to buy (jeans in strange sizes) it doesn't seem necessary in order to beat other buyers, more to avoid sellers shilling.

toby, Sunday, 2 March 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

i only ever snipe, and manually.

I am selling a camera on amazon marketplace

it has been bought by some women in tottenham, london

she is now asking me to send it to 'her dad' in lagos, nigeria

am I right to be suspicious in this? what would happen if I didn't send this?

czn, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

dont do it

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

they get the camera and then say it didnt arrive and they get a refund and you lose camera and money is my guess what will happen.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

I mean she has paid for it, but with amazon I don't get the dosh until 14 days later

presumably she could pocket my camera in nigeria and then cancel the credit card transaction, before the elapse of the 14 days

Please ! can u sell this item to the other bidder please as I bought the wrong item

amateurist, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

jesus christ it's been a while since I sold anything on ebay but has that site gotten fucking terrible or what? the forms to list things (cds in this case) are jacked, I used the 'sell a similar item' function after posting one item then rewrote the item names and in every single case, despite it showing up correctly when I listed it, it reverted at some point to the original item name, giving me 10 listings for the same item. add to that the annoyance that most of what I posted over 12 hours ago still doesn't show up under myEbay selling page. Plus their fees are out of control now. Fuck you ebay.

akm, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

Sellers aren't allowed to give negative feedback now. Which means deadbeat buyers get often get 'positive' feedback with vicious comments as a rider.

Soukesian, Friday, 25 July 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

A Makaveli CD single in card sleeve I was selling blew out from 99c to $25.99 in the last two minutes yesterday, I am alarmed for the buyer's sanity.

I've listed 167 items in the last few weeks, the most aggravating aspect of the Sell Similar Item form is that you have to re-enter the overseas shipping info every single time. It hiccupped a few times and lost names, tracklistings or photos, but nothing like akm's problems.

energy flash gordon, Saturday, 26 July 2008 11:12 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

So has the new free postage and packing for CDs had any impact on any buyers/sellers on here?

Seems to be a win/win for ebay. No more free 99p CD listings and they get a bigger cut of the final selling price.

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 26 October 2009 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

this got way better since then

if they brought free postage and packing in for .au ebay, I would give up altogether. 99c listings (which aren't free here, either) are what gets people to look at your shit, just-above-cost-price postage is what makes that worthwhile for you the seller.

RAPTOBER (sic), Monday, 26 October 2009 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

OK, so how are people still selling CDs for 99p with free P & P? They've got to be losing money after ebay/paypall fees and packaging. Are they just doing it for fun or am I missing something?

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 2 November 2009 09:06 (fifteen years ago)

It's not like anyone's going to buy this - but it's 30p! If someone buys it - the seller is going to lose about 60p.

1) It's an auction, so you could get more than one hurrican....

1) People would most likely buy a few of his other item, so eventually guy turns a profit

2) Maybe it's just a space clearing exercise, and it's marginally better than just chucking them on a skip or donating them to Oxfam or something?

I guess it must be 1). I've put a bid on one of his 99p CDs just to see what happens/what condition it arrives in. He's saying first class delivery (which is 90p for a CD) so if he just wraps it in some brown paper he's got laying around and sticks a stamp on it he'll make 9p. Minus the ebay final selling fee of...er...9p = 0p.

Maybe he works somewhere where people don't guard the outgoing mail franking machine too closely? Apart from that, no idea.

almost certainly this, plus maybe a loss leader to get people looking at his other auctions? whenever there's a free listing weekend, I try and throw as much useless crap up as possible to get people to have a squiz at my overall auctions (and there's always something that goes for a reasonable price to some nutbag)

I've basically listed CDs starting at 99p exclusively for the last five years and didn't plan to stop any time soon so I'm fairly cheesed off all told. Haven't listed anything since the change but I'm considering seeing what happens if I just list them with free postage and then say in the 'any other info' box something to the effect of, 'I know it says free but we both know this is dumb, it's actually going to be £1.00 so if you could add that on that'd be super kthx' - I have no idea how many ppl would be jerks about it, you can but try :/

I've seen that statement a bunch of times, so who knows...

Basically, just had to *up* my starting prices. Will have to see...

Mark G, Monday, 2 November 2009 10:40 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I'll probably list a handful at £1.99, then a handful with the additional message, and see which is the least worst option

War On The Terrances (DJ Mencap), Monday, 2 November 2009 10:44 (fifteen years ago)

I've put all my 99p ones up for £2.49 whereas before I had them up for 99p + £1.50 p&p (hey, it's a long walk to the post box, ok). And whereas I sold loads at 99p, the £2.49p are very slow to go. I think I've got about 50 up at the moment, 4 of which are selling. Maybe it's the Economic Climate, maybe it's just that there are millions of CDs for sale out there, but I do think, for some reason, £2.49 sounds a lot more than 99p(plus P & P). Like Mark says, we'll wait and see. All I know is that the bag to oxfam is looking a lot fuller these days.

Annoying thing was that you could offer discounted shipping if someone bought more thsn one cd which made things better for all concerned i.e you could rid of the cds and the buyer didn't get stung for postage. don't see how you can offer discounted shipping now.

I gave like 200 CDs to Oxfam yesterday so having done one charitable thing I intend to be a selfish bastard long into my dotage now

two years pass...

Are these people nuts? Maybe no one wants an organ anymore! Granted it's 1983 not 1960s which is my favorite decade for organs. $300!

Sounds like the person truly loves it.

Ebay has asked users to change their passwords following a cyberattack that compromised one of its databases.

The auction site said that the database contained encrypted passwords and other non-financial information.

The US firm added that it had no evidence of there being unauthorised activity on its members' accounts.

However, it said that changing the passwords was "best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users".
