That's Scotch. If it were made somewhere non Scottish, it's malt.

What is Straight Whiskey?

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

What about Scottish blended whisky then? (Not that I'm assuming it's anybody's favourite)

aldo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

You can get Blended Scotch

Tom D., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Also I would like to take his moment to say that I love Bourbon. And there like like 100x more scotch in MTL than bourbon. It makes me sad. I am trying to learn to appreciate scotch (in fact, someone bought me a 15-year glenlivet a while ago, which I have been picking away at) but so far it doesn't tickle me like bourbon does.

xpost: Straight Whiskey is pure whiskey, undiluted by neutral spirit or other flavourings. In the USA, straight whiskey must be aged in charred barrels.

xxpost: do you mean like a blended malt scotch? it's scotch.

Will M., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

oops xp

Tom D., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

How can you reduce Scotch to one choice? Ridiculous.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Blended can be malt AND grain

Tom D., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

if someone wants to start a scotch thread, I am all for that too, but i am more interested in seeing how many people prefer other whskys OVER scotch. also i didn't wnat to split the scotch vote.

Oh the problems of taxonomy.

In "The Analytical Language of John Wilkins," Borges describes a Chinese encyclopedia called the Celestial Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge, which divides animals into these classes:

1. those that belong to the Emperor
2. embalmed ones
3. those that are trained
4. suckling pigs
5. mermaids
6. fabulous ones
7. stray dogs
8. those included in this classification
9. those that tremble as if they were mad
10. innumerable ones
11. those drawn with a very fine camel's hair brush
12. others
13. those that have just broken a flower vase
14. those that resemble flies from a distance.

speyside vs glenmorangie vs oban

remy bean, Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

what are scotches from the island areas called again? islays? i recall liking them and speysides the best, i think. there was this bar that would give you a flight of 5 diff. scotches which was amazing for forming opinions because you could really contrast the flavours. there was this amazing almost saltiness? to the islay one... i wish i could remember the name of it...

Will M., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

wait, it may havej ust been "island" scotch

Will M., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

Islay is one of the Island distilleries, or else is just a Highland whisky?

Tom D., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I once did a whisky website, so I should know all this!

Tom D., Thursday, 1 November 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

Islay is an island that has its own distinction among other island whiskeys which are a subset of highland whiskeys. whatever that means. anyway, i like them

Will M., Thursday, 1 November 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

i like whiskey macs :)

Yes, Whiskipedia tells me the regions are The Highlands, Lowland, Islay and Campbeltown (Islands (but not incl. Islay) part of Highlands)

Tom D., Thursday, 1 November 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

Highlands/Islands/Speyside are generally lumpted in together.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 November 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

Lumpted, ha.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 November 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

I like those ones. Don't like Islay much. Dunno about others.

Guys did you know there are wheat bourbons and rye bourbons?

nickalicious, Thursday, 1 November 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Guys did you know there are wheat bourbons and rye bourbons?

Well, yes, but I've never heard people refer to a "rye bourbon," I don't think. Bourbon by definition is mostly corn (like 80%, i think), some malted barley, and the remaining mash made of either rye or wheat. Rye is the default, and has a bigger flavor, and wheat is mellower and more in the high-end stuff, like Maker's Mark and W.L. Weller.

kenan, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

Bourbon by a hair over Scotch. Current favorite-Bulleit

Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 November 2007 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's just 51%, Kenan, not 80%, which leaves a fair bit of leeway... but I could totally be remembering the wrong number.

Will M., Thursday, 1 November 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

51% by US law (I just looked this up myself), but according to wiki usually around 70%.

Lionel Hutz had it right. Bourbon, the brownest of the brown liquors, wins this motherfucker right here.

Although, I will admit that the Scots would put up a good fight. But give me that sweet, Kentucky gold every damn day.

bourbon!!!!

wheat is mellower and more in the high-end stuff, like Maker's Mark and W.L. Weller.

maker's is not actually "high end"

also, i like ryes a LOT but bourbons are more available and therefore i have more experience with them, so bourbon it is!

tehresa, Saturday, 3 November 2007 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

i think jim beam rye (the yellow label) is the only rye i've drunk. weird how rye used to be such a major category of liquor and now barely exists. it must have to do with subsidies.

one year passes...

Been getting into Single Malt Scottish Whisky for the last few months, particularly Islay & other more heady varieties (Talisker, Old Pulteney, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Highland Park, ...).

I'm thinking of branching out into some American Whiskeys. Just ordered a bottle of Jim Beam Black Aged 8 Years to try, as I have a cheap source.

Excuse me if I end up saying the same kinds of things in multiple Whisk(e)y threads while I hunt about and find one that suits/works/sticks...

krakow, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 11:04 (fifteen years ago)

Beam Black is a great value for bourbon. If you like that, try Bulleit next.

A friend of mine finished off the bottom of bottles of both Van Winkle 12 y.o., and Booker's on Saturday night. Twas a fine dessert.

Let Amare go ham like he was all you can eating it (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

Got a bottle of Buffalo Trace today. Will try it tonight.

UK-ers, Asda have just started stocking it & at a pretty reasonable price at the moment.

American whiskeys really don't seem to be available (except online) in the UK unfortunately. In shops, I mean. A shame.

krakow, Sunday, 20 June 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

Is there a distinction between Canadian whisky and rye (rye whiskey)?

Sundar, Sunday, 20 June 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

yeah there is a pretty big difference between canadian whisky and u.s. rye whiskey in terms of taste at least

call all destroyer, Sunday, 20 June 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

to be called a rye whiskey in the u.s. the mashbill has to be at least 51% rye. canadian whiskies often have a high percentage of rye but i don't believe there's a specific requirement.

Ha, OK, I see. People didn't seem to know what I was talking about if I asked for "rye" in the US so I just assumed it might have been the same thing as Canadian whisky.

Sundar, Sunday, 20 June 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure the vast majority of u.s. bars don't actually stock a rye, unfortunately

I sampled some Basil Hayden's bourbon neat followed by some Maker's Mark, my go-to bourbon for the last 20 years, and I was genuinely surprised at how smooth the Basil Hayden's was compared to how harsh the Maker's Mark was. I mostly take my Maker's Mark in Manhattans so maybe I never noticed the harsh bite of it.

But I've turned to rye in a big way recently; in fact have a bottle of Rittenhouse BIB on the shelf waiting for my next old-fashioned or Manhattan.

I have yet to have a Japanese whisky I didn't love, but I am too lazy/forgetful to remember which brands I've tried. I tend to just buy cool-looking bottles from local shops and I really need to start taking photos of them.
