It's Monday morning and I'm nostalgic for the weekend. Let us discuss the various beers & microbrews & garage moonshines one finds in the great nation of Texas.

boo this guys: full moon pale rye ale
How is Live Oak Pale Ale? Bootlegger Brown Ale? Independence Pale?

Celis RIP
― Euler, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)
Do they not make it anymore? I thought I'd seen Pale Rider at the store recently.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)
For some reason stores and bars in Chicago are selling Shiner at a premium price, it makes no fucking sense.
― dan m, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)
Celis had some great ones -- loved Celis White. How did they go bust?!?! Ziegen and Shiner aren't remarkable but I drink 'em. Prefer PBR to Lone Star. Haven't ried the others.
― wanko ergo sum, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
Celis was brewed in Austin but it got bought out by Miller (I think) and closed down. I think someone else (not in Texas) bought the name then and is brewing it again, but I don't know if it's from the same recipe / ingredient sources.
― Euler, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)
yeah I mean Shiner got me through college but it's by no means a great beer
― Euler, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)
also three cheers for Lucky Lager, which cost $2.50 a twelve-pack in the mid-late 90s.
Fireman's 4 is pretty good, man. Recommended. xpost to wanko
Euler's comments go for pretty much every beer in my "awes" list. xpost
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)
I missed that somehow. Wowza. xp
― wanko ergo sum, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)
I am not so crazy abt Shiner at all tho sometimes I will buy it for variety bcz it's a totally decent price.
― Abbott, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)
I drink Honey Brown on that basis. Some people retch at the mere mention of it. Just drink it COLD, that's all.

Pale Rye Ale is the finest thing ever. PISTOLS AT DAWN, STEENDRIVER!
― Oilyrags, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)
raspberry?! Only one man would dare give me the raspberry -- LONESTAR!
― Don Knotts, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)
And hell yeah to St. Arnold as well. I also like the Independence Brewing Company thingies.
I could be mistaken, but I think that the new Celis is Pierre's baby all over again, and even the same brewing plant.

vombuckets at dawn?
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)
Also, though it is not a beerz, surely Tito's vodka deserves a mention hereabouts.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)
There has yet to be a vodka thread, but surely it is one of the finest anywhere.
― kenan, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)
Indeed!
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)
I love their distillation strategy - "we buy other guys' vodka, then distill it further!"
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)
On Texas topics - Los Angeles Plays Itself will be at the new Ritz Drafthouse next Wednesday. It will be my inaugural flick at the new location. Be there, or be don't there!
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)
I saw a guy wearing an Alamo Ritz Opening Night shirt on the bus today, I wanted to hug him.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)
I hope they keep Full Moon on tap. Be nice if they could get a full bar going, too.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)
I think they do have a full bar in fact. Saw a picture on the blog or something.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, my wallet is in trouble now.

Oh, and some Mike and Ikes.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)
no mention of Pearl?
― milo z, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)
i'm glad someone admits this. i've known too many texas ex-pats who confuse their nostalgia for college and/or texas with thinking shiner is actually good beer, and who insist on stocking their fridge with nothing but at parties etc. it's just a mediocre regional brew, and outside texas it's usually overpriced. (i guess the equivalent for a penn stater like me would be undue allegiance to yuengling.)
― tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)
If you're in Austin and want to sample Texas beers, go to any Opal Divine's on Wednesday... they have $2 pints of any Texas beer all day! They've got most of them on tap, too.

On my birthday someone insisted I go down the line and try them all.
But I was sane instead.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)
I thought the reason for Opal Divine's was Scotch, not beer, but that doesn't sound like a terrible idea.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)
last time i went the girl with me kept getting shiner until i finally forced her to get something else.

Got this last night. It is so-so. Maybe I just don't like brown ale?
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)
I'm beginning to think you don't like REAL ALE!
Fer serious, I prefer a thicker, richer, maltier beer in cool weather like this, so I've been enjoying brown ales, stouts, and porters for the last few days. I've seen Real Ale's seasonal coffee porter on tap at at least three places the last couple of weeks.
― Oilyrags, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)
i am very happy with the six pack of shiner hefeweizen in my fridge
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)
went amazingly well with the cilantro chicken i made last night.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
Dude you are all messed up. Wheat beers are for hot summer weather.
I DEMAND ORTHODOXY IN BEER APPRECIATION!
― Oilyrags, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
lol in that short story i submitted to BIG MAGAZINE they are drinking sam adam's cherry wheat beer in a snowstorm.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)
I had a lone star at a club in El Paso a few weeks ago. It was pretty unremarkable, but I wondered if it was what Alamo beer was supposed to taste like.
― Abbott, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)
That's what I always figured. Hank and his boys seem the types to go for nearly tasteless, watery domestic industrial pilsner.
― Oilyrags, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)
Man I drank a lot of Lone Star back in my dead-broke poet days.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)
Still only a buck at Ginny's Chickenshit Bingo Sundays!
― Oilyrags, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't know Shiner was a Texas beer. The price is right on that one. It's not a favorite, but it's not bad, and I'll pick it up for variety every couple months.
