the original poster, "Don Knotts", seems like a total asshole.

I actually thought this could have been an interesting thread until "Some of them are ILX mods". Perhaps it can still be this way. Perhaps we can ignore the last three sentences of DK's post.

To answer for reals: Sometimes it feels awesome because you realize that that there are a TON of people who don't express their actual feelings/beliefs because they feel societally constrained to follow the "rules" or appease others or whatever...and it's pretty damn great to get outside of that. Those people will call you an asshole for not buying into the same system of effort/reward that they're following because it invalidates their own efforts. And I'm saying this as someone who is/has quite often been "inside" the system.

Note I am NOT saying that manners and courtesy and getting a fair shake aren't important and nec for basic social lubrication...but style vs substance.

well, the "some of them are mods" part of my post was really just to lead into the second part of my question...which is why we accept assholes? Why we sometimes even like them, or love them? Is being funny and/or interesting more important than not being cruel or whatever?

I think to some degree becoming more comfortable with emotional introspection as opposed to the intellectual variety has helped me cope with a lot of stuff. Any discourse about myself and my motives used to be very tied up in the limits of language but then I realized that's kind of a huge crutch

See Tombot, all that introspection and soul searching is totally not asshole-esque. I mean, my question was really about people who don't think about this stuff and just go out and act like douchey McDouchalots all the time. Maybe they don't exist? Maybe people are deeper than they seem on a message board!?

I'm inclined to say that I'm pretty sure you're not an asshole, Tombot, or at least that, while everybody has asshole tendencies, yours seem far less serious than the large majority of people I know.

I think some people who are assholes all the time are, as moonship indicates, just bullies at heart who didn't grow out of it. So the motivations are the same. I always figure people who act like assholes at work are bullying out of insecurity that everyone around them can do the job better, and this has basically been upheld as 100% true, anecdotally.

I was going to log out, but then decided against it.
I've been a part of a cheater's harem and it made me feel like an idiot when I ended up comparing stories with another girl. I suspected that my ex had cheated on me towards the tail end of our doomed LDR. But, truthfully my anger about it was all ego driven because it drove me crazy just thinking that he was with someone younger and possibly prettier than me.

And now I'm an Other Woman. The situation is/was kinda sketchy and I think it's funny (well, it probably won't be for her if she finds out). I think I'd feel guilty or possibly ashamed if I actually was it for more than the cheap thrill. I mean, I'm single and have the license to do what I want. It's really the guy and his girlfriend's problem if he can't keep his lust in check. Or maybe I'm just a sketchy asshole, which is entirely possible.

There is very little sympathy for the happy asshole, whereas sometimes you just have to feel sorry for a miserable asshole, whether we're talking about actual buttholes or people.
