you could blame the lowest common denominator but somehow i don't see that as awfully productive and if not what then a basic chicken and egg type question that trades in final states do you really believe cnn international is so much better and if so why and if consumers were producers would that really be the answer and can one really agree upon principles of journalism and could journalism be independent of the state of society

CNN v. bloggers is a false choice. The best investigative journalism is usually done by gifted, experienced reporters under noble-minded editors at large but not behemoth newspapers with large educated readership and a sense of mission.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

er sorry I guess you don't necessarily mean only bloggers, but indymedia dudes or whatever

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

which is not to say citizen journalism can't ever be great. But journalism is usually better when backed by resources and training, provided it's not also hampered by bottom-line mentality.

yes to clarify presupposition (contested) journalism in the us in a worst state than elsewhere in the world and if so and if one wants to lay the blame than whom if no one can resist chocolate and sugar and confection and fabrication then how to talk about the things that matter is it really because one is closer to one happens in this other state does anyone here believe he or she is close to what happens

youn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

than should be then

the intelligence of readers and writers

youn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

has big time media appropriated bloggers in some way that reveals the dynamic of capitalism or of news in a malagasy village

'The best investigative journalism is usually done by gifted, experienced reporters under noble-minded editors"

ground control to major tom

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

sorry but say these values and this knowledge is it esoteric what if everyone has a camera and a penchant for reporting the facts

youn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, aside from not following everything you're saying, what facts are these people going to report? 50 Bread and Puppet theater dudes show up for a rally? Because to really dig for "facts" takes quite a lot of time, effort, training, experience, resources, etc. How many citizen journalists are going to be able to develop anonymous sources within the Pentagon? How many citizen journalists are not only going to understand city records and know how to search them but have the time and energy to do it?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

is it workaday or something more

youn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

no at least i hope not sorry to make you think that I think trolls generally engage more than one person, or two

imagine craft

youn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)

actually it's the complete lack of punctuation, but to each his own i guess.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

carry on.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

i like "citizen journalism" as an ideal, but like hurting says, good journalism tends to come from experience, expertise and especially just having the TIME to put into the work -- which is hard to do for people who aren't being paid to do it full-time. you're gonna get the occasional really-motivated moonlighter who will do good original research, but it's not going to happen too often.

the more interesting thing to think about is what models are going to spring up that will allow people to do full-time professional journalism outside the auspices of the corporate media. talkingpointsmemo is maybe the most advanced example so far, at least in the u.s., and it's a promising one as far as it goes. but i think it also illustrates the fallacy of the "oh if only someone would tell the truth" mentality that you run into a lot on media-obsessed blogs. LOTS of people tell the truth, or some pieces of the truth, and the reality (as any experienced old-time journo could tell you) is that in fact it takes a lot more than telling the truth to change the world.

still, have at it all ye citizen hordes. the more the merrier.
