This thread is about Saltines.

Do you like Saltines?

Saltines.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

Saltines are a sign of god's goodness to man.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:33 (eighteen years ago)

I just ate one entire sleeve of them.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

With 7 Up?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:35 (eighteen years ago)

I remember going to the school nurse in third grade with an upset stomach, and the woman working in there said "YAWWNAA SAWWWTAAAAYNE?"

I asked her, "What?"

"I said YAWNAA SAWTAAAYYYYNE?"

We went on like that for ages.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

Canada Dry if you must know!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

canada dry is awesome!!!

saltines not so much.

deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

are saltines still made with p@4+!@11y hyd4063^@+3d 80yb3@^ 0!1?

get bent, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

It's the combo that is so fucking good!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

i think the first time i ever learned that trans fats were bad for you was back in the '80s when my dad was going through a health-nut phase and would chide me for eating the packets of saltines that came with my soup at the diner.

get bent, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

i had saltines crumbled into total comfort food going-home-from-school-for-lunch soup at a diner in st henri last week. apparently that diner is now closed, partly b/c the couple who owns it are tired but prob partly for other reasons re: property values/taxes going up in a former working-class neighbourhood. it was a pretty awesome place.

i wld consistently eat sleeves of saltines w/ peanut butter in highschool

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:03 (eighteen years ago)

I still like them okay, but I do think the experience of "morning" sickness during pregnancy kind of made them less appealing, since I ate them often during that period of my life. That being said, I can barely stand ginger ale after using it for the same thing, so Saltines must be kind of awesome if they can stand up to months of nausea.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:07 (eighteen years ago)

i eat saltines crumbled in my soup approx. 3 or 4 times a week. (i have a very precise system for this -- two crackers to start, another 2 when i'm halfway through the bowl.) they also turn out to be very handy for pre-empting temper tantrums in 3 yr olds.

if you order the "cheese plate" at mcsorley's, they bring you a hunk of supermarket cheddar, half an onion and a sleeve of saltines. that plus beer is close to a great dinner.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds great!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:12 (eighteen years ago)

is that "oldest ale house in manhattan" mcsorley's? that cheese plate is awesome.

don't forget the mug of mustard you can spoon on to the saltines.

gr8080, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

or is that there for the sandwiches?

gr8080, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:58 (eighteen years ago)

Saltines RULE. Nabisco PREMIUM are my favorites, others being either too buttery, not salty enough, or not toasty enough.

That said, after eating a whole sleeve I feel SICK.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:24 (eighteen years ago)

I once got a dude to put vegemite on his Saltines!

Canada Dry Clear Creaming Soda is, so far, the greatest disappointment in my life.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

Love saltines.

(creaming soda?)

G00blar, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, Canada Dry Clear Cream Soda.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 09:10 (eighteen years ago)

What could be more classic??

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

ned OTM w/ first post basically

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

My mom still keeps hers in a tin from the late-50s/early-60s.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

You'd think they'd be stale by now.

G00blar, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

what is the half an onion for?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

you put onion slices on the cheese with the crackers.

gr8080, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

so good.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

if you order the "cheese plate" at mcsorley's, they bring you a hunk of supermarket cheddar, half an onion and a sleeve of saltines. that plus beer is close to a great dinner.

I've done this!

Saltines and peanut butter = delizioso!

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

are saltines the same thing as cream crackers?

jonbat, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Thinner. Saltier. Less buttery.

paulhw, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

saltines are amazing for cramming as many into your mouth as possible and seeing if you can finish it without drinking water

max, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

also when i had mono these were the only things i could keep down and i like 15 pounds

max, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

The whole wheat saltines are gross, we always had them growing up. Blech. I think they turned me off saltines entirely.

Will M., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

they are a sorry excuse for saltines that's for sure

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Lol @ Max liking 15 pounds.

ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTE!

I go through about half a sleeve per bowl of soup. They're delicious when they're plain, they're delicious with peanut butter, they're delicious with 7-UP.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

i dont like 15 pounds, i LOVE 15 pounds

max, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Their not a cheese cracker, but we have Triscuits for those which, I will dare say, are nearly as classic.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

they're

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

theyre never delicious ever, what the fuck is wrong with you people. you might as well be eating salted burnt toast. waverly's are where its at.

deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

Salted burnt toast is the bomb.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

saltines + vegemite = salty awesomeness ffs.

ALSO: AVOCADO

W4LTER, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I will try that. We happen to have some vegemite in the cupboard.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

One of my college housemates would eat them BUTTERED.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

Little bit of butter with Vmite is also good, I'm just not big on butter in general.

W4LTER, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Buttered saltines are good, too.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed!

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

gross, but good.

gr8080, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

They're not a cheese cracker, but we have Triscuits for those which, I will dare say, are nearly as classic.

Triscuits chase saltines down the block and kick their ass! And the "Woven Wheat Crackers" at Trader Joe's are Triscuit copies at about $2 a box (only come in one flavor, though). Saltines aren't bad, but almost every other cracker is better.

nickn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

I only thought it was my last night of Saltines. Tonight I made chili for a book club and a guy brought over an entire box of saltines. He forgot them. Tonight (and many nights hence, surely) I feast on them + sriracha and mozzarella.

related (v minor) roffles

A saltine, my good sir? Dare offer me a saltine?! Pray tell, what grave offense have I committed to deserve such a crass display of effrontery? Do I look like a member of the lower born? Do you take me for an illiterate gutter-dweller, wallowing in my own filth in the street? A urine-soaked, pus-riddled common animal, licking its open sores and eating its own feces, sir?

W4LTER, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

Are saltines anything like Saladas? I dont think Ive ever had a Saltine.

I recently found a brand of Saltine-like crackers at the asian supermarket in the city... they were Korean (I think? maybe japanese) and they were spring onion flavour. They tasted awesome even just buttered and I have got to go back and find some more.

Trayce, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

yeah totally premium plus
in university i wld eat a whole sleeve with cheddar cheese or peanut butter and call it dinner
i haven't bought them in years though! prob b/c i wld totally eat a whole sleeve + cheese + like tomato soup for dinner for 4 nights in a row

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

Way back in kindergarten, snack time at our school meant saltines and chocolate milk, a combination I still crave occasionally. Is that weird?

lindseykai, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

Trayce, those sound extra nice.

I eat them with canned smoked oysters and Crystal hot sauce, sometimes a little mayo. I crush about 20 into a bowl of chili. I dunk them in tomato soup. I eat them with a little butter. I eat them all alone! <3 saltines

rip van wanko, Monday, 5 August 2013 01:04 (twelve years ago)

when we talk abut saltines I presume we mean Nabisco PREMIUM? I might actually prefer Krispy saltines. To my amazement I don't recall ever having a heated family argument on the topic.
