What is the difference between a zinger and a troll?

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

... this sentence works best in a Viennese accent

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

Lady, if you have to ask...

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Trolling: Sinister
Zinging: Hipinion

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

Which one of us impotent balding cunts is that addressed to? (xp)

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

Lady, if you have to ask...

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Oh right, it is Dom then

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

so *is* zinging just the new word for trolling then, or are they distinct?

Are people unwilling to answer this or unable to?

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

A zing is a pithy, witty piercing piece of insight aimed at another poster, the kind of post ILXors such as Dom Passantino are best associated. Trolling is posting pictures of goaste in RIP thread

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

trolling is when you start a thread with the transparent purpose of starting a fight.

zinging is letting people know firmly but fairly when they're being a wally.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

actually, trolling under the new rules is responding to opinions you disagree with (eg people who go to pizza express are slack-jawed plebians) in appropriately robust language.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say zinging is trolling if that is the only thing some poster will do on a thread.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

It all depends on how neurotic you are

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, this should be posted in bold at the top of every thread

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

no-one posts JUST ZINGS. they look at a thread, and if it's dumm, or if it's done-to-death, or if it's one of those creepy anonymous ones asking for advice, it's more likely to attract zings.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Still, I don't see why people feel the need to zing... If you feel some thread is "dumb" or "done-to-death", why post at all?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

Because it might be nice for certain ILX posters to know that maybe, perhaps, just possibly their "death to the proles" schtick is a little offensive and dumb?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

Er, I think I've missed something here. What "death to the proles" schtick?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

the chain stores thread. dom was using hyperbole for comic effect.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

or not!

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Ed does burn banknotes in front of the homeless, though

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't checked it, but I don't think Dom's zinging is restricted to that thread and that issue alone.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

Keep 'em peeled

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

QED

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

my god the temptation to troll the queen's speech thread is killing me.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, because "I don't know, but my imagination tells me things" is the kinda post you should be getting all Nabisco in response to.
xp

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

OK fuck this, this discussion really doesn't need to be going on on multiple threads.
