A zing is a pithy, witty piercing piece of insight aimed at another poster, the kind of post ILXors such as Dom Passantino are best associated. Trolling is posting pictures of goaste in RIP thread

trolling is when you start a thread with the transparent purpose of starting a fight.

zinging is letting people know firmly but fairly when they're being a wally.

actually, trolling under the new rules is responding to opinions you disagree with (eg people who go to pizza express are slack-jawed plebians) in appropriately robust language.

I'd say zinging is trolling if that is the only thing some poster will do on a thread.

Actually, this should be posted in bold at the top of every thread

no-one posts JUST ZINGS. they look at a thread, and if it's dumm, or if it's done-to-death, or if it's one of those creepy anonymous ones asking for advice, it's more likely to attract zings.

Still, I don't see why people feel the need to zing... If you feel some thread is "dumb" or "done-to-death", why post at all?

Because it might be nice for certain ILX posters to know that maybe, perhaps, just possibly their "death to the proles" schtick is a little offensive and dumb?
