is anyone watching this besides me? new CW show, one of the best pilots i've seen in a while, kinda up & down since then (though tonight's episode was very good). notable mostly for consistently great performance by ray "leland palmer" wise as the devil. anyone?

When I read the thread title, my first thought was, "Oh no, Calum's gone to directing horror films now?"
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)
Haven't seen this show yet (isn't Kevin Smith involved somehow?).
Anyway, yeah, a Ray Wise poll would be really awesome, between "Twin Peaks," "Robocop," "24," and guest shots on almost every American prime time series ever. (Not that any other role has a shot at winning besides Leland Palmer, but still...)

kevin smith is an exec producer/show runner, i think, but the show doesn't really reflect his particular style.
― smash your phonograph in half, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)
I'll say, I had no idea Kevin Smith had anything to do with this show. It has higher production values than any of his movies! I like this but almost never get to watch since House is on at the same time. And I liked Bret Harrison's other show that got cancelled last season, The Loop, better.

the jack black-like side-kick bugs me. i would say the casting for that show is pretty bad all around except for leland. it's just not that great. or the episodes i've seen anyway.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)
Scott's mouthing pure lies. The show is great and Sock is god's gift, especially compared to his cancerously obnoxious doppelganger on Chuck. This side of America's Most Smartest Model, my favorite new show of the season.
Smashy, were you referring to the muscle car episode being pretty good? I thought it was the weakest of the season, which I'll say has been has been more up than down for me.
I think KS's imprint comes in the form of the show's bawdy language -- a lot of "douches," "dicks," and the like, which makes me wonder if FCC/S&P doesn't care about the CW.

i think they just asked kevin smith to direct the pilot episode - which he did - but i don't think he has much to do with the show. he said he did it cuz he thought it was cool that two chicks had created a genre show. he also said that he spent more time on making the pilot look good than he had with any of his movies and that it looked better than any of his movies. and he was right!
― scott seward, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)
i am not feeling the jack black sidekick at all, i have to say; actually, most of the secondary characters feel like just sketches. i can't figure out why i'm pulling for this show so much when there are so many problems with it that i acknowledge. leftover leland love? i feel like there's a good show in there somewhere, but it's going to take them another season to find it.

Leee is OTM with the implication that this show has way too much in common with "Chuck" -- the premise, the tone, the protagonists (one works at a Best Buy-type store called Buy More, the other works at a Home Depot-type store called Work Bench) -- but is superior in every way. Hopefully the fact that Reaper is on a smaller network with lower expectations means it will outlast Chuck in the long run.

Oh lawd! Sock's dream!!
― Leee, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
Last night was the first time in a long time that the bad-guy plot measured up to the Work Bench character interaction. And yes the dream omg.

my company signed a release to have one of our shirts used in this show, but i haven't watched any of it, so i've no idea whether it has been on or not.

Is your company Megadeth?

and is business good?
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)
pilot was really good, the 3 or 4 subsequent eps i got through were pretty bland. it should have been more like my name is earl vs buffy, and not my name is earl vs ghostbusters, especially since it's not as good as my name is earl in the slacker lolz dept anyway.

Does anyone else remember the sidekick guy from Breaker High? How great was that show?!

Liked this week's episode a lot, I have to say; i think my big overall problem with the show is that there are no arcs. they could be doing so much with the show, and they're basically just sticking to the same formula. I remembered earlier today that the piolet featured Sam's overachieving younger brother #&8212; who was never heard from again. Ditto Sam's parents. I like the idea of the devil becoming a surrogate father to Sam, but they really need to kick it up several notches. the main reason i'm watching right now is Ray Wise, who is basically always amazing.

and my big problem is that i'm shitty with HTML, apparently.

I quite enjoyed last night's episode, particularly the look on Sock's face in one scene I can't recall at the moment.
― Leee, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, last night's episode was pretty good, definitely one of the first I've seen that does something to expand the premise and demonstrate how the show might have some tricks left up its sleeve.

We've tuned in a couple of times now, it's not horrible, it's even funny.

Michael Ian Black & Ken Marino as next-door-neighbors = thumbs up (tho I wish it was KM doing the actorly heavy lifting). Also, kinda wish Cady (Prom Night / Hills Have Eyes 2 girl) was the actual love interest instead of Andi (Heroes girl). Also: more w/ Sock's ex, plz.
― David R., Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)
Off-topic: I had no idea / forgot that Ray Wise was in Robocop!!!
yeah Cady >>>>> Andi
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)
PS: Don't watch Hills Have Eyes 2.
― David R., Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)
was that an implied endorsement of Prom Night?
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)
Well, it's got Idris Elba, so, you know, maybe?
― David R., Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)
so did The Reaping. and 28 Weeks Later. and This Christmas. and Daddy's Little Girls. dude is awesome and I'm glad he's getting roles but I'm not quite ready to see him in anything.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)
Standards are only going to get you into trouble.
― David R., Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)
anyone still watching this? the break between seasons was so long i almost forgot it existed, but the first 3 episodes of this season have been good, and i think more consistently funny than before.
― some dad (some dude), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)
Well, it's over. I enjoyed the finale and the series as a whole. It kept hinting at a great world and mythology, but would immediately scurry backward to focus on being a comedy. Still, I'm surprised that I did end up liking the characters and show more than I expected. The back-and-forth relationship between Sam and Andi got really tiresome at times, but it seemed like they were going in a different direction with that in the finale, it's a shame. Sock and Ben only got better as the show went along, and the Devil was classic from the pilot.
Since the show creators have already left, I'm not really sure I want to see a third season if it happens (which is rather unlikely anyway) but I suppose you can never have too much Ray Wise as the Devil, ever.
― Nhex, Friday, 29 May 2009 11:54 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, good finale, hinted at where they could go without it being too cliffhanger-y, but also left off on kind of a dark note that I felt good about. Last few episodes were among the best the show's had, although I might be saying that partly because of how happy I was that superhot demon girl Nina pretty much became part of the main cast.
This is the kind of show where, even though they had a good premise/characters, in some ways it was often let down by the writing and plotting, so honestly if a talented showrunner took the reigns from the creators I could totally see it being as good as before or better.
