Love this advert, and here's the extended version. There's barely anything online about it, which surprises me. Was it made by Jankel and Morton? How was it filmed? Another video on Youtube seems to show that the music for the advert was taken from the SNES game Robocop, is this right?

that is, of course, a complete rip of Zbigniew RybczyƄski's 'Tango' that won the oscar for short film in 1983...

Ah great, that's just what I've been wanting to know, thank you! Was this common knowledge at the time?

More questions: who's the guy speaking in the advert? What even is Ariston, did it go bust or is still going now?

koogs, i've been trying to see that again for years but couldn't remember the name of the artist. thanks!

the ariston ad is quite poor i think. the earlier version of the ad where they sung "ariston" to the tune of trio's "da da da" stuck with me more.

They made kitchen appliances. I haven't seen this for 20 years so great to see it again.

The voice reminds me of Woebot.

Tango used to be on ch4's Fourmations series all the time (back when ch4 was good and showed interesting things). plus it won an oscar, so it wasn't exactly unknown. but am sure 90% of the people who are familiar with ariston advert (or that kylie video that is the same) aren't well up on their Polish animators...

Ariston made washing machines and other white goods. still do apparently. but not in the uk judging by their web page: http://www.aristonchannel.com/ariston/

koogs, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

yes, koogs, that's definitely where i saw it before.

here's the other ariston DA DA DA ad: http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd_KwyJDN4E

Ariston still market in the uk because i know i've seen this ad http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=zA2Qp5DizpE fairly recently.

jed_, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

it was definitely the music for amstrad robocop, which was an exceptional game.

darraghmac, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Here's the Youtube which compares the ad to different versions of Robocop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD3WnR3L-zY
Did the Robocop music come first? It's wonderful.

The link above to download Tango doesn't work but I'm getting it from Emule now. I could zshare it if anyone else would like to see it.

that Da Da Da version also rips of another animator, specifically the hokusai wave bit in the background. can't rememebr the guy's name though, did the video for Music For Babies... 'Rand' i think

oh, Run Wrake http://www.runwrake.com/archive/music_videos/musicforbabies/index.html

also, they bought Hotpoint and kept the name in the uk as it was more well known.

clothes as fish advert is rather good.

yeahhhh

xp

Weird how Ariston wasn't a well known name in the UK yet they still used this advert on UK tv. It seemed so alien at the time, this hypnotic combination of sound and vision that didn't have any link to any product or thing 8 yr old me knew about.

I shall zshare, it may be a while though.

two months pass...

And here it is: http://www.zshare.net/video/6390918b477d42/ (Zbig Rybczynski's 'Tango')

Wow, that must have been such amazingly painstaking work. Incredible that even at its busiest nobody obviously walks through anyone else. Thanks!

Fuck, I think about this advert almost every day because my turntable is Ariston. We used to have it in the advert break of some shit film we taped off the telly, but I watched a few of our old tapes recently and couldn't find it.

Cheers for the thread revive. This has been quite a day for finding things I should have looked on the internet myself for quite some time ago.

Ah great, that's just what I've been wanting to know, thank you! Was this common knowledge at the time?

yes. i was fascinated by this advert when it first aired in the UK (1987, yeh? i'd have been 12) and i remember reading something about it not long after, almost certainly in the guardian; it mentioned this experimental film that it had ripped off (obviously "tango", which i've never seen, but will watch anon -- should be working now!) and referred to it as using a specific video technique ... i remember it as "video tripwire", but i don't think that can be right at all.

awesome to see it again, anyway: i'm actually oddly moved. rush of nostalgia, and all that. the music sounds very SID-chip to me, but having had a quick flick through the music-comparison post (which i'll also listen to properly at a later date) i realise it's not a C64.

wow. made my day, this thread.

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 12 January 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

(also: i've obviously never seen the full two-minute promo, just the washing-machine edit that was on UK TV, so thank you again!)

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 12 January 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

hehe no worries simon, i'm still fascinated by it now, absolutely love it. does anyone know where i can find the music for it (pref without the voice)?
