Gangstarr=Monotonous rhymes over monotonous beats. Guru is just a terrible rapper..."Lemonade is a popular drink, and it still is...blah blah blah blah blah Bruce Willis" Please!
EPMD=Rappers with lisps kick ass (see also Kool G Rap), they had the coolest slang of any rap group ever ("bozack", "skeezer", and they had dances called the Steve Martin and the Luther Vandross), were the first group to use the "Ain't No Nigga"/"Mack of the Year" and the "California Love" samples, among numerous others, plus this: "She had green eyes, thunder thighs and a def body / to top it off she drove a black Maserati / with a chrome kit and a smile that you couldn't resist..."

I hear you on the lazy/clumsy front, but Guru's always been lazy and clumsy. From the beginning, he's always lagged a little bit behind the other MCs of the moment. This is, after all, the man responsible for the fabled "lemonade is a popular drink line" -- hardly a high point for rhymed verse by any standard. I find it sort of endearing or, maybe after dubbing this season the summer of Full Clip, I'm just used to it.
Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan) wrote this on thread Am I to understand people here aren't talking about the new Gang Starr record? on board I Love Music on 25.7.2003
Guru's always had clunkers, and some of them have been really, really bad (although I think the "lemonade was a popular drink and it still is" line is kinda charming). But there's nothing else on this album. Nothing that sticks in my head, at least, and I don't want to listen to the album again to try and dig anything out, mostly because the beats aren't good enough to keep me entertained.
On earlier albums, especially Moment of Truth, Gang Starr seemed sort of at one remove from the pop-rap landscape, like they just didn't have too much to do with it and that was fine. On this one, they're like, "Fuck you, Nelly! Fuck you, Sean Paul! Fuck you, Chingy! We're gonna openly disparage all the fucking great production of the past five years! Come and get some of this monochromatic snare loop and cliche horn sample action!" And it's just not on, especially since the past couple of years have been very, very good to the pop-rap landscape.
I'm gonna go drink beer and listen to DJ Quik cuz it's Friiiiday. If anyone wants to argue with me about the fundamental shittiness of the new Gang Starr, save it till Monday, when I'll be bored enough to care again.

AMG is full of annoying "blows away the commercial nonsense" comments. Are they like that?
Kind of, but with diminishing returns. Their best albums (Step in the Arena, Daily Operation and Hard to Earn) are all from a decade or so ago, could all be summarised as very 'real' straightahead hip-hop, but rendered radical by DJ Premier's astonishingly inventive way with a sample. Guru's a frequently dire lyricist (witness ILX eternal fave 'lemonade was a popular drink and it still is', used only as it rhymes with Bruce Willis), but with a very enticing grain to his voice and a hypnotic (or boringly monotone, if you're not in the mood) delivery.
Ten years on, this formula's still in full effect (they even announced they use a formulaic approach on their late-90s album Moment of Truth). Less radical than it was 10 years ago, but eternally there for those who loved them.
Probably not unlike say Iron Maiden or Slayer in that respect!

The "wagon" part came from "Wagon Wheels." Lemonade was a popular drink and still is; Wagon Wheels was a popular treat and still is. Alcoholics Anonymous used to serve Wagon Wheels at their meetings in the mid-80's, and this became so commonplace at AA meetings that the concept of "sobriety" came to be signified by "wagon" the wheels of which were delicious combinations of marshmallow, chocolate, and OH FUCK I'M SUCH A BAD LIAR
