the correct moment to arrive at a party

Following on from the "correct moment to leave a prty thread". When is the correct moment to arrive at a party? If the host says that the party starts at 7PM, do you arrive at that time and risk finding that no-one else is going to turn up for at least an hour? Or arrive much later, only to find that all the good booze has gone and that no-one believes in being "fashionably late" anymore?

You're right, it's a quandary - if only there was some kind of middle ground.

in spain, if you're really close with the host, it could be considered rude not to show up two hours early, to help with the preparations

That's it though, there doesn't seem to be! Either I arrive before everyone else, or turn up later and everyone says "man, you should have been here half an hour ago, because this really cool thing happened! shame you missed it! oh yeah we just ran out of tequila 30 seconds before you walked in!"

I find "half an hour late" works a treat almost every time.

Or an hour, if you're partying with minorities.

party starts at --> arrive at
5 -> 5
6 -> 6:15
7 -> 7:30
7:30 -> 8:10
8 -> 8:45
8:30 -> 9:20
9 -> 10
9:30 -> 10:20
10 -> 10:35
10:30 -> 11
11 -> 11:20
any later -> no later than 20 minutes after the time

it's always the right time to start a party

last spring we had a party that we told people started at 11. one person showed up a bit late but not very (11:20-ish?). this was unexpected, we weren't even totally set up, he was the first one there, and he ran around yelling at us about why there wasn't anyone at our party yet. it was pretty funny. i guess my answer is it doesn't matter that much, but arrive with other people because then it'll be more fun no matter how many people are there.
