A Modest Proposal: NO REVIVE NOVEMBER

If something is worth talking about let's talk about it afresh. If a thread drops off the bottom it is talked out. So how about it, we stop reviving old threads and find something new to talk about, or find new ways to talk about old things?

zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing zing

This it what it sounds like with no revives.

the thread title might as well say "HEY GERSHY AND HEAVE PLEASE PISS ED OFF AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE"

Its that time of year again where its gloomy in the north and tempers are getting frayed. It happened before, last year and people got hurt. Let's all try to be a bit nicer, please, or take your rage out on me I couldn't care less what internet mentalists think of me.

Bring it back,
sing it back,
bring it back,
sing it back to me

When you are ready, I will surrender
Take me and do as you will
Have what you want, your way's always the best way
I have succumbed to this passive sensation
Peacefully falling away
I am the zombie your wish will command me
Laugh as I fall to my knees

Can I control this empty delusion?
Lost in the fire below
And you come running your eyes will be open
And when you come back, I'll be as you want me
Only so eager to please
My little song will keep you beside me
Thinking your name as I sing

(Sing it back to me)
(Sing it back to me)

Come to my sweet melody (repeat)
No, you can't help it if you feel have been tempted
By fruit hanging ripe on the tree
And I feel useless
Don't care what the truth is
You will be here come the day
Truth do you hear me?
Don't try to come near me
So tired I sleep through the lie
If you desire to lay here beside me
Come to my sweet melody

Sing it back to me (sing it)
Bring it back (sing it)
Sing it back (sing it)
Bring it back
Sing it back to me

(Sing it, sing it, sing it)
(Sing it back to me)

Bring it back
Sing it back
Bring it back
Sing it back to me

I really like the way Roisin pronounces "me" in that song.

This it what it sounds like with no revives.

there were no good old days, only days like these, let us stop gazing at our historical navals.

Ed, Monday, 12 November 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Umm, Ed, ILX as it stands with no revives would be unworkable. Unless you really want a new thread every time someone wants to say something about Radiohead/Iraq/Middlesbrough v Wigan.

Tru. But it was either that or some pics of "historical navals". Where's Kate when you need her.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 12 November 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

Not for ILX, for ILE, and only for a limited period, and only if threads have dropped beyond the humungous new answers page.

Ed, Monday, 12 November 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Indirect Discrimination

This occurs where the effect of certain requirements, conditions or practices imposed by an employer has an adverse impact disproportionally on one group or other.
This is a less obvious form of discrimination.
An Employment Tribunal will look at 3 factors.

1. The amount of people from a racial group or of one sex that can meet the job criteria is considerably smaller than the rest of the population.

2. The criteria cannot actually be justified by the employer as a real requirement of the job. So a candidate who cannot meet the criteria could still do the job as well as anyone else.

3. Because the person cannot comply with these criteria they have actually suffered in some way because of it. This seems obvious, but a person cannot complain unless they have lost out in some way.

sunny successor, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

also im not making a new americas next top model thread everytime i want to point out how hot jenah is.

sunny successor, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

What a weird suggestion.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Americas next top model thread bnever drops of new answers in any case.

The reason I make this suggestion is that half the threads on new answer, or more, are just pointless revives with our amateur paul morley brigade quoting something in italics or just typing 'lol'. It's like one of those do you remember the good old days programs on channel 4 that are a complete waste of space.

Ed, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

I'm definitely more for revives than new threads. That way, if I think, "hey, what was that poignant thing that _____ said" and I remember the topic, I can usually find that one thread... whereas if the discussion on that otpic is spread over two or three or four or more threads, it gets a little insane. And "lol" revives often make me read tings I didn't know about before, so that's always nice.

Will M., Monday, 12 November 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, space is an issue on terrestrial TV, not on the internet. Revives per se aren't the problem, and the fact that they are the main way of returning to a topic on these boards is one of the thing that increases signal-to-noise over your average board.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Both of those points are valid but I think at the moment 'lol' revives are more noise than signal.

Ed, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, perhaps. I don't click a lot of threads I don't recognize, so maybe I don't see the worst of it, but it seems to me like the lol revives are actually not as common as they were a few months ago.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

space is an issue on terrestrial TV, not on the internet

...however, time is finite, and since it takes a user time to read these threads, or at least, scroll to the bottom and see the lol/italics, it's sort of a waste like those good old days shows. At least, I think that's Ed's point, not so much "space on the internet," per se. xpost

Will M., Monday, 12 November 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

So not gonna happen.

Dandy Don Weiner, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, yeah, fair enough.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is an interesting experiment and I will participate, Ed! Do you have a hypothesis about what will happen? Which of the other boards is the control group? (ILM?)

Abbott, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

how can you see into my eyes like open doors
leading you down into my core
where I’ve become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

now that I know what I’m without
you can't just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Bring me to life
(I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside)
Bring me to life

frozen inside without your touch without your love darling only you are the life among the dead

all this time I can't believe I couldn't see
kept in the dark but you were there in front of me
I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
without a thought without a voice without a soul
don't let me die here
there must be something more
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

(Bring me to life)
I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside
(Bring me to life)

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 08:36 (eighteen years ago)

(i) there's a lot of old threads that are fun to see again.
(ii) um, you don't have to click into them.

pointless revives can be annoying, but is it really that big of a problem?

darraghmac, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

I like revives as well I just thought it would be good to go without them for a while and see if we can use this to stimulate some new avenues for discussion even on old topics. I don't expect everyone to play along but I want to encourage a little thoughtfulness.
