Pete W, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

I work on High Holborn and can't see much from here - how big is 'huge'?

Matt DC, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Fucking enormous, loading pics now.

Ed, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

Like a large building is on fire. Big old billowing clouds of grey smoke.

Bethnal Green/Hackney Road area, says cabbie on radio.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

OK, TV says Stratford, in fact.

Eyewitness says there was no bang.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

Are we allowed to be disappointed if it's just a plain 'ol fire?

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

Great pics on telly,

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

Suggestion it was a bus depot?

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Police now saying it's an industrial estate.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Or maybe just "industrial area" as Sky are now saying it's Hackney Wick bus station again.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

Haha Londoners you must now breathe in CARCINOGENS for the next two weeks, oh wait I'm gonna be there this week SHIT

Just got offed, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

We are setting things on fire in your honour, LJ.

Ed, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

Derelict East Cross Centre bus station, says Arriva spokesman. Seems quite relaxed about the whole thing.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

LJ, couldn't help but roffle at that comment. :-)

Can I see this from Cambridge...*looks out of window, due south*

Just got offed, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

Phenomenal pictures from Sky and BBC helicopter cameras now showing. You can see the flames behind the thick black smoke when they zoom in.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

There'll probably be another couple of fires along shortly.

Pashmina, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

It's all coming out of this huge depot building and doesn't look like it would spread anywhere. Though there is an ominous-looking gas container thing nearby.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if this is in a contentious area re: building for the Olympics...

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Insurance scam by Ken.

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think the building was being demolished anyway in preparation for the Olympic building work, so this would be a rather stupid act of anti-Olympic arson.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I think I've got the wrong end of onimo's stick, but I still can't find the right end.

Alba, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

It was just on the BBC1 lunchtime news - the warehouse was empty and due to be knocked down anyway.

snoball, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking scam rather than protest. It's amazing how many buildings go on fire when something new is going to be built next to them sometime soon.

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Well, at least the new London Overground got off to a good start...

"The blaze has disrupted rail services in east London."

Oh. Carry on.

James Mitchell, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

i saw this from the train coming into london -- from way out, like welwyn garden city or something -- and didn't know what it was. pretty amazing.

Local Garda, Saturday, 21 February 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

LONDON (AP) - Authorities say a recycling plant has caught fire in east London. A fire brigade spokeswoman says the building is «100 percent alight.
British police identified the blaze as an industrial fire but gave no further details Saturday. Sky News television reported explosions and a large column of smoke.
A spokeswoman for London's ambulance service says there are no immediate reports of any casualties.

Both spokeswomen released the information on condition of anonymity in line with official policy.
