So many questions about this. How violent will he make it? If everything from the book is left in the movie, there's no way they can get an R for it. And of course there's everyone's favorite internet movie game: guess the cast. A seven-foot-tall, completely hairless pedophile murderer and philosopher? That poses a whole lot of casting problems at the same time. (For instance: who won't mind killing their career?)

at a certain point in the book i realized i was picturing the judge as peter garrett.
http://blogs.business2.com/greenwombat/images/peter_garrett.jpg
i can imagine a movie of the book, but it's hard to imagine a good one (or one that hits the book's balance of allegory, history and phantasmagory).

not generally, but when you have an infant's brains being dashed out on a rock... well.

sure but there's a million ways to effectively shoot such a scene without explicitly showing the baby's brains splattering or whatever else the MPAA might find specifically objectionable.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
Guy Pearce's been cast as the lead in this.
I kinda think the MPAA's going to have a problem with baby murdering, period.

SPOILER * * * * * * * * * * * * * There really isn't anyone else that Pierce COULD play, except for: - Dude who gets shot by Dad with the first of the remaining to bullets - Old guy who they feed - Guy who steals their shit - Man at end who finds the boy
This is, of course, taking that Viggo is still to be the dad. I think that Pierce could TOTALLY pull of the desparate loser of the dad in "The Road."
Also, for the record, who the fuck ISN'T a desparate loser in a post-apocalyptic landscape without growing food sources or hope? I mean, dude tried his godamn hardest, didn't he?
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 November 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

I love both these books and, to be honest, I'll be happy if just one of the two movies does a decent job. More pragmatic than the dad in The Road, perhaps. ;)

― gbx, Saturday, 17 November 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)
i love blood meridian and thought the road was a good breezy read. they're totally different books and operate on very different levels. of the two, the road makes much more sense as a movie. it was practically written as one.
― tipsy mothra, Saturday, 17 November 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)
If they make a movie of Blood Meridian, I don't think I will go see it. I just can't imagine it doing anything even resembling justice to the book, and I really don't want to ruin my mental conception of it. That is so old fashioned, but it's true.
― Jenny, Saturday, 17 November 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I have higher hopes for The Road, the narrative is almost entirely told in small bite-sized frames, but they could really screw up those odd mythological bookends. That creature! Blood Meridian is less obvious, less fabulous (in the fable sense), but presents more opportunities to really fuck up. Did somebody suggest Ray Winstone for Judge Holden? You know, even if they were kidding, I think he might be a great choice if they give him some illusory height (as well as shave all the hair off his head and face as well as lose the London accent, etc). Sadly, the best options are all dead (Brando, Pleasance, Brynner)... Hmmm, what about Robert Duvall with an extra thirty pounds? Too old? But some of the characters in this story are actors dreams -- Toadvine, Tobin the ex-priest, Glanton, etc.
(That said, I understand Jenny's post completely. I just think I'd end up being tempted to see it anyway.)
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 17 November 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)
so uh is this still happening?
while reading, i've always had the judge as probably charles durning, except specifically when the height aspect has been mentioned, when i default to brando at the "apocalypse now" stage.

the imdb page lists todd field as the director now, but even that hasn't been updated since april. i don't think it's going to happen, which is just as well. ridley's last word on it seems to be this:
think it's a really tricky one, and maybe it's something that should be left as a novel. If you're going to do Blood Meridian you've got to go the whole nine yards into the blood bath, and there's no answer to the blood bath, that's part of the story, just the way it is and the way it was.
― STRATE IN2 DAKRNESS (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)
