discourse more like discharge, amirite?

kenan, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

right up in your face and dis you

dan m, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i think i am still down for trivia

n/a, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

The song in this video is the dance song I've been looking for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4JLE-Mkp3s

But is it actually a Cha Cha Shuffle remix? I don't think so?

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I think it starts at 8 and we get up to five people on our team.

jaymc, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

where is that pub again?

n/a, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

sarah might come to watch but i don't know if we can convince her to actually play

n/a, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

1934 W. Irving Park Rd.

dan m, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

okay i guess it's "the Mississippi Cha Cha Slide aka the Stomp" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMW0TMlA3_0

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

nick, you should totally make your own pasta...it's kind of a pain, but can taste so good and is really satisfying. especially nice right now with some of the yummy mushrooms that are around just cooked in butter with parsley. mmm.

the game was fun but yeah, the wings looked like crap. it was weird trying to explain rules to hockey to toby when i don't necessarily know them myself.

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

also, we were at a dinner party on saturday where 5 of the 8 people were mathematicians, and it was still really fun! we were also the only people without kids, the youngest people by far and the only people that weren't jewish. it did make us realize that we're bound to ask people over for a dinner party and then it'll turn out that they're kosher, and we have no idea how to deal with that-- does it help that our kitchen is essentially vegetarian?

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

That probably helps, although if they're really strict it would matter if meat had ever been up in there, I think. But if they're not orthodox that shouldn't matter, they just won't eat meat with milk or unkosher meat.

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Depends on their own standards, but...probably not? It wouldn't count as "vegetarian" unless you could certify that no meat (esp pork & shellfish) had ever touched the surfaces, dishes, silverware, sink interior, dishwasher interior, cookware, utensils, etc in the entire life of the kitchen. And even then your word wouldn't really be good enough for kashrut, because having something kashered requires rabbis and rituals and stuff.

Ahh xp, yeah, the Jewish people I know are sort of nuts for the rules, they don't play no "essentially vegetarian"...but your dinner parties will obv be a lot easier if your guests are more relaxed.

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

But to make it easy peasy, fish isn't considered fleishik (meat)! So you can serve it in butter, in cream sauces, with a side salad incl shaved parmesan, etc etc. So much easier than trying to serve meat w/o dairy, in my opinion (at the very least because soy milk in my after-dinner coffee is just not okay).

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Also my mom told me that pretty much all beer is automatically kosher.

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

"Entire life of the kitchen" implies previous tenants, though, so you're probably fucked.

jaymc, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Also my mom told me that pretty much all beer is automatically kosher.

Then what's the point of this?

http://www.sevenpack.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/HebrewMessiahBold.jpg

jaymc, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

marketing

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

not kosher:

http://www.wisconsincheesemart.com/images/usingerspbr-web.jpg

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

xp Good point.

jaymc, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i guess the previous tenants part would be the problem, i'm pretty sure that we've never cooked any kind of meat at our house-- the closest thing would be smoked salmon at a brunch where we used paper plates anyway. it's interesting to think about, though.

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Are your dishes and silverware and pots and pans and cooking utensils all new since your move? If you brought anything with you from the UK and you've ever cooked meat in it, it's treyf anyway. :)

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

I have to work at Catch tonight. Don't wanna. I got written up last night. I was at the bar waiting for change from the bartender, with one buttock on a barstool, one foot on the floor. The manager we call Elmer Fudd (bald, strong Polish accent, constantly on the hunt for someone to write up) told me I was making a joke of my job and asked me if I wanted to be sent home. I said yes, I did.

Jesse, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

Don't you have to kasher your kitchen stuff even if it's all new?

mike a, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

Also, your dishes are irrevocably treif if they've ever had nonkosher food on them. Something about the food being able to seep into pottery, whereas silverware, teflon, etc. have no such issues.

mike a, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

for the first time in my life all our pans are new, as are our dishes and cutlery (international move followed by wedding registry). however, i think if we ever have people over that are kosher, there must be some caterer that does delivery that we can just use? or just not invite people around, this may be easiest.

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

jesse, did they send you home in the end, then? that really sucks...

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

just get a bunch of meat from romanian kosher sausage co. and toss it on paper plates

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

If you're entertaining strictly frum guests, you can get away with catering and plasticware. That's the simplest solution; I certainly have attended my share of Shabbos meals that take that route. Depends on how elegant your party is, I guess.

mike a, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

i could be up for trivia tomorrow

sisut, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm guessing those folks never get to go out to eat?

KitCat, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

but i'm a vegetarian! our dinner parties are almost always vegetarian, which was kind of my original point. unless there's a specific reason (like it's someone's birthday and they requested toby's famous pork belly), you get no meat at my house when you come for dinner.

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

They sent me home. Which was actually pretty great. I worked for 3 hours, made $120 and had my whole evening free. Though I could have made a lot more had I stayed....

The money is what keeps me there--I can't really live like I want to on my current office salary, and I make nearly as much if not more at Catch in 10-15 hours as I do here all week.

I like working, just not there. And yes, I am starting to look for a new PT job. ALL REFERRALS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Jesse, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Sarah, my mom never goes out to eat, but in Chicago there are a bunch of legit kosher restaurants, I'm told.

Jordan, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm guessing those folks never get to go out to eat?

Au contraire, KitCat - Chicago is sort of a Promised Land of kosher eateries throughout the Midwest. We were still keeping kosher last time we visited, and we were able to keep ourselves fed just fine.

mike a, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, there's nowhere near the volume you'd get in someplace like Brooklyn, but there's still way in Chicago than St. Louis.

mike a, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of inviting people over...

i'm thinking of having a little festive drinks thing in celebration of my new citizenhship. the ceremony is the first wednesday of december. should these drinks be that evening, the thursday or the weekend? i know in years past every weekend in december was booked up way in advance and obviously don't want nobody to come, but also don't want people to not come because it's a school night. any thoughts?

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Thursday, b/c it's a Thirsty day.

Jesse, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Historically.

Jesse, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

i was thinking thursday might work as a gentle lead-in to the weekend. i'm not imagining a rager, just some mulled wine and cocktails or whatever. i like having people over for mulled wine.

colette, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

A Thursday seems like your best bet!

KitCat, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

not this thursday though

n/a, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

please

n/a, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

It doesn't happen 'til December anyway, Nick.

KitCat, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah

n/a, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm so sleepy.

I just read a reviewer somewhere describe something as "explosively funny," and I chuckled to myself a bit, because it's a terrible cliche, but also because there's something vague funny to me about the word "explosively" all by itself. To the point of explosion. That's quite extreme.

Anyway, I think I may be explosively sleepy.

kenan, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

I believe the problem may be that I ate too heavily at lunch, because provious to that I was explosively hungry. Not I'm explosively sated.

kenan, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

NOW I'm... man.

I am an explosively bad typist today.

kenan, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Now you're waiting for the next explosion.

dan m, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Happy almost-bday.

KitCat, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

And a Happy Belated Birthday to Jenny too. :-D

KitCat, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I had my first insured doctorial visit in....wow...6 years! He was nice, and he's sending me to an opthalmologist (I'm seeing what I call a "calalmari ring" in my left eye) and an ear/nose/throat specialist because he says my tonsils are "nasty and cryptic" (they have divets that form from being a fatso with fat tonsils) which is contributing to my terrible snoring and sleep apnea.

Jesse, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

I am turning 28! Hurrah! I noticed upthread there was mention of trivia somewhere - have people been going to this? Do you have a full squad? I'm a big trivia fan and would definitely go.

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

The first 2/3rds of that Bruce thing could be a Nice Pete blog post.

Jordan, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

trivia is today ... wouldn't be able to do it today but maybe next week

n/a, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

Stingy, we went to trivia at the Globe Pub a few weeks ago. It was kind of fun -- I think we all agreed it wasn't really our style (by which I mean it didn't play to our strengths), but we'd probably go back.

Kevin, have you received e-mails from the trivia dude? Because I haven't.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Other places that do trivia

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

no, no email.

i'd go back but can't do it tonight. next time i'm not pre-gaming at another bar and i'll only have like one or two beers during the festivities.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

How was the trivia host? Back in Chapel Hill I'd go to this one trivia every week even though I was not very good at it because the host was really hilarious. He'd have difficult historical and legal categories, but then he'd always have something like 3-named celebrities or something that was easier.

I also noticed they were having Rock n Roll Jeopardy at Pontiac. Not sure if it's still going on or what the format is, but if that was a team-based thing I'd be up for that one.

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

oh man i bet we could assemble a pretty awesome r'n'r jeopardy team

n/a, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

This has it listed as only in November, with the last one last night: http://chicago.going.com/event-188210

n/a, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

The trivia host was plenty friendly but also a little smug.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't been to the pontiac since the ffs first-ever show

n/a, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I got an e-mail from Going about it originally. I wonder if they'll continue it though if it was successful.

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

i googled the RNR jeopardy event and found the myspace page for the host ("L0rd Aw3som3"), and there is a comment on his page from my newest coworker.

n/a, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

this says every monday so maybe they will continue:

n/a, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

I hope rock and roll means popular music and not just rock and roll.

Unfortunately, Monday is traditionally band practice night. :(

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

wow it really is Jeopardy then, not just simple trivia. I do wonder if it's only individuals then, kinda looks like it from that photo. I don't know how they could do that though with a bunch of people.

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

does anybody here watch I Love New York 2?

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Never heard of it.

I'm kind of interested in this: http://www.chicagoreader.com/features/stories/sharpdarts/071122/

dan m, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

it's a trashy show on VH1, sequel to Flavor Flav's show starring one of the women he jilted. it's very over the top.

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

i got to see the salt n' pepa show at a friend's house over the holiday, that made me happy

Jordan, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

dan that was 3 days ago! show/afterparty was at beat kitchen.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

dan m, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

My problem is I never read the Reader on the day it comes out, so I'm constantly learning about shit after the fact.

dan m, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

i went to see eraserhead last night too, but we were at the 6:15 show! then i ran into an old friend at the lake red line station and we chatted all the way home. good times.

now i am swamped with work and would love nothing more than to purge my brain of the mutant baby.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I read the Reader today and saw that I missed MIA. Damn.

Jesse, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I'm trying to find a radio edit of the new Cafe Tacuba single. Do you think I should write a 19-year-old Mexican kid who has it on his Last.fm page to see if he'll e-mail it to me?

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

¿Y-griega ese i?

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

why do you want the radio edit?

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

jesse, we talked about the fact that you missed MIA in the taxi on saturday!

colette, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Because I want to include it on my 100-track Best of 2007 mix, and unlike longish songs by Gui Boratto, Supermayer, Studio, etc. that I'll undoubtedly include, I feel like the last couple minutes of the Cafe Tacuba song are sort of pretty but pointless meandering: the best parts of the song all happen in the first four minutes.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

gotcha. i'm not sure i've ever heard a cafe tacuba song at all. are you ranking your 100 tracks?

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh dear....you're right Colette. I had other things on my mind (ie, booze).

Jesse, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

No, not ranking them, but they'll be artfully sequenced! Also not sure it will be exactly 100.

For reference: 2006, 2005, 2004.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

(There are 104 tracks in the playlist right now, but I usually nix a few that I decide I don't like all that much and add a few that I discover through end-of-the-year lists.)

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

so my boss gave me a kind of ultimatum of sorts

"i've noticed you've been tuned out ..." massive understatement, i hate my job as many of u are aware...

Basically, my job as a researcher isn't really needed right now, and shes asking me to assess my commitment to the organization ... and i'm having trouble faking enthusiasm

she gave me the option of part time, (not really financially realistic) or becoming a grant writer or working in one of the specific areas she needs. i want to quit, badly, but it is a very bad solution cuz i don't have anything lined up, have some decent-sized CC debt + college loans and a not particularly cheap rent.

i can try to fake it, convince her i've changed my ways and am fully committted!!! but its totally untrue; she's trying to get people to work evenings, come in on weekends, etc. Fuck that.

advice???? i'm applying everywhere i can think of but it might not be enough.

deej, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

Also: I hadn't heard Cafe Tacuba before recently, but they were reviewed on Sound Opinions and I really liked that song.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

kot's been a tacuba fan forever.

deej, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

i was thinking of trying to be an intern at sound opinions, but then i saw that all npr internships require a certain amount of work during normal business hours, which i can't really do right now. why didn't i do one of these internships when i didn't have to have a real job at the same time? ugh.

deej - you could always try to sign up with a temp company if you want to quit. that's what i've been doing since i moved here. might not pay as much as you're making now though i suppose.

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

is your temp co. any good? whats a good temp co?

deej, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

they've been keeping me at jobs pretty well, and the job i'm at now is pretty chill, that's basically all i can ask for. if you don't want to commit to your current job then you definitely wouldn't have to worry about that as a temp

stingy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)
