anthony, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you must wear socks anthony, it is vital. its all i ask.

gareth, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony, ask yourself this question: "am I an extra on Howards way?" if the answer is no, then say to yourself "I must remember to put some socks on before my shoes"

chris, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone in England wears sox. LADIES in the FUTURE of course will wear THERMAL SOCK BRAS but then again that is just a personal and somewhat disturbing vision of my own. I went to Topshop at lunch and coveted stripey over knee sox but did not buy any as I am... a fule. ALSO it is not yet summer so I cannot wear them with SKURTS (that and the whole hairy leg thing).

Sarah, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony, if you do not wear them why do you need them? What exactly do you do with them?

Emma, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I recently rationalised my sock accomodation unit and found I had EIGHT odd socks. I meant to throw them out but after a while I found the lonely little guys had kind of grown on me. I am going to post their pictures on the modern interweb thingy to try and find the yangs to their yings.

misterjones, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Socks still alive? (I know Buddy's left us.)

the pinefox, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope this works.

(I can just picture Anthony's bemused expression re: 'am I an extra on Howards way')

Jeff W, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I often wear two pairs of socks.

jel --, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with you Anthony. I think socks look very unfeminine and never wear them if my ankles will show. Therefore I never seem to have socks when I *must* wear them. damned socks.

ps. i'm said to hear buddie's gone. I once had a Socks t-shirt but gave it to a Japanese boy who collected American presidential memorabilia.

Samantha, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not wearing any socks right now.

Curt, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Socks aren't vegetables man, they should be wiped out

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I recently rationalised my sock accomodation unit

Political correctness has gone too far this time! Down with the sock lobby! Down I say!

Kim, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't your feet get cold?

Arthur, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my skin is really sensitive, esp. my feet , the elastic literally hurts. So that pain is less then the coldness .

anthony, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
Reviving the sock thread!

I like socks.
I am passionate about socks.
In the warm months, I like to wear tall white socks with colorful stripes at the top.
In the cold months, I like to wear tall patterned socks, argyle & stripey and whatever else looks pretty with skirts.
I have to cram everything in to get my sock/undies drawer to close.

(Yeah, cuz I'm passionate about underwear too but there's already a REALLY long thread about that,so..)

Discuss.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yes. And sometimes - to mix things up a bit - I like to wear little white socks that fold over. They make me feel like a little girl again. They're so basic, but compared to my other socks they are very unique.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel that wearing matching socks is very important and I get vaguely depressed if I am not doing so. Also, they have to be nice socks, I have mostly got black ankle ones with coloured heel and toe detail, although I am embarking on a mission to buy as many nice Burlington socks as possible, but at 6.50 a pair I probably shouldn't. Anyone wanting to buy me gifts can buy me socks. Please.

alix (alix), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
In the warm months, I like to wear tall white socks with colorful stripes at the top.

these wouldn't be soccer socks would they?

so lets talk about summer socks. i feel like i'm going to be moving into a kind of tennis sock vibe -- i mean the ones that are like ankle socks i guess. white of course. how does everyone feel about pom poms?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget Japanese schoolgirl-style Super Loose Socks.

http://www.pagepage.com/culture/cultur16.html

Hasn't Momus written a song about that ? If he hasn't, he surely will at some point.

darren (darren), Sunday, 27 April 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

an unfortunate though iconic look

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my summer tip: Buy a pair or leather sandals. When it's hot out, life is better without socks.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 April 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh no, bad tip

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 27 April 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

No, great tip, especially if you buy toe rings and ankle bracelets to go with them.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, Yeah, I was talking about tube socks. Soccer socks. What have you.

In the summer I also like to wear short little white socks that fold over (cuffs?) like little girls wear.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 28 April 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Loose socks just bother me! They're just so uncomfortable, I don't like my ankles to feel cold.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That's where the sock glue comes in Nicole:) I must get those red and white soccer socks.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
wow, there's a thread about socks! i shouldn't be surprised, but i sort of am.

i just bought these (balega enduro women's running socks):

they're made with with DRYNAMIX (wait lemme say that again: DRYNAMIX) moisture-wicking power!

Did the glacier in the library bounce today? (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

i'm ready to throw out all my other socks now.

Did the glacier in the library bounce today? (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I experience a complete turnover in my sock stash every few months now. After years of wearing socks until they were threadbare and no longer worthy to touch even my feet, I finally figured out that 1) socks are cheap, and 2) new socks are better than old socks.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Now that commute on my bicycle every day, I go through at least 3 pairs a socks every day. There are my morning socks (always cheap grey atheletic socks), my work socks (often more of the same), and my night-time socks. The luxury!

I love my night-time socks. Right now I'm wearing green & brown checked, pulled as far as they'll reach up my leg. I used to be a sucker for Gold Toe old man socks, but I'm moving away from them. Buying new socks when I need to instead of waiting for old ones to die miserable deaths is something wonderful I've only recently discovered, Kenan OTM.

Rhodia (Rhodia), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

My greatest clothing desire is to throw out all of my old socks and replace them with a bunch of the same kind, so I don't have to worry about matching them up ever again. But this seems remarkably wasteful and expensive, as I run through two or three pair of socks a day.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Headline in last Friday's Wall Street Journal: "Once Close-Knit, Sock Industry Starts To Unravel" (or something similar)!

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

I am loving that there is a domain called socksonline.net out there. That kills me.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 30 May 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Bad socks:
-the ones with individual compatments for each of your toes and grips on the bottom. they are creepy
-ankle socks also. i like them but they always manage to slip down past the top of my shoes and then i get blisters
-novelty socks which have a plasticky homer simpson (or what have you) stuck on instead of the image being stitched in to the very fabric of the sock

Good socks:

furry/towelly type socks that are really comfortable
socks with twotone horizontal stripes
ipod socks
any that are clean

if i'm wearing matching socks it's either a coincidence or else i'm somewhere i need to look very smart. i normally grab the first two i see. a LOT of people seem to get annoyed by this, but i don't see any reason to make them match. They're not really even clothes, just functional items to make your shoes comfortable and less stinky. Earmuffs aren't clothes either. or nappies. Gloves, scarfs and pants are tho, i'd say.

Slumpman (Slump Man), Monday, 30 May 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

Any sock that is brand new, right out of the package is a great sock.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 30 May 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Slump, I know people (ahem) that don't match their socks. While I do not feel that this is any kind of sin, neither do I understand it. It's not that hard.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 30 May 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

WHen all yr socks are plain black ones like mine, they inevitably get mixed up, Im quite sure mine often dont match. Unless I'm wearing my Emily the Strange black and red stripey ones oh shut up I'm not a goth.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 30 May 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I love long socks, the ones that reach almost up your knee. I guess they're sort of a compensation for the long-missed tights of my childhood.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

i have never se4en my b/f in a matching pair of socks.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

i have never seen my b/f in a matching pair of socks.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

You secretly wish your boyfriend was Brad Pitt?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, nothing.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only person here who finds socks slightly creepy? I mean, listen to the word. Socks.

On the other hand, other people's choice of sock/shoe combination is usually what I first judge them on.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Gradual & inevitable process of sock vanishage => also student poverty & general anti-ponce aesthetic meaning I've only been buying white socks => getting to finals and realising I could find exactly one even vaguely blackish sock => many, many snooty snooty comments frm proctors and invigilators.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Do Oxford invigilators really check your sock colour during exams?

I think the only socks I own now - apart from maybe a couple of pairs of thick wooly hiking socks - are the black-with-heel-and-toe-highlights ones mentioned by lixi above.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

nine years pass...
