I think it comes down to their best films being about MORE than just the caricatures (which, its true, are in every movie) - you know, Lebowski is a goof on the Big Sleep, Miller's Crossing is Hammett, Hudsucker is Hepburn-style screwball comedy, etc. But the reason I singled out Raising Arizona is because it doesn't have any subtext or even any real external reference points - its just wall-to-wall "laugh at the yokels" gags.

the cast of leibowski... hmm, let's see... includes a burnout, a vietnam vet, a slut, a yes-man, a wealthy self-important gas-bag, a pretentious feminist, bumblimg nihilists... etc ad nauseam. YES THOSE ARE ALL INTELLIGENT, SOPHISTICATED PEOPLE, NOT STUPID AT ALL, NOPE.

my favorite is on the other thread when cosmo says The Jesus is cool because he is an icon beloved by geeks

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

oh HEY WAIT, I forgot to mention the BENEVOLENT omniscient COWBOY narrator

they do have a pretty miserable view of human connectivity -- in all their movies communication is as hopeless and self serving as in mamet. how that relates to 'stereotype' i dunno, haven't thought that through.

gff, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

all the not listening in big lebowski drives me crazy - i dont understand how people can watch it over and over

jhøshea, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

i have a number of acquaintances who go to "lebowski fest" every year. i don't really like those people at all.

omar little, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

b/c it (TBL) is full of funny xpost

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

love big lebowski but its hard to have anything to say about it any more

deej, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

all their movies are like that! nobody ever gets through to anybody else... that's the big tragedy of 'miller's crossing' frex.

the mishearing and repetition are funny in lebowski, my favorite screenwriterly trick is how often he picks up other people's phrases w/o any real content or intent coming along w/ it

omar little, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

I would not go to the festival (wtf lebowski/anchorman nu trekkie rocky-horror fandom ugh) but I like the movie quite a bit for being ridiculous. I love when dude goes and gets the imprint off the porn king's notepad and it turns out he was just doodling an erection

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

yah not saying its uh bad or anything - just that particular tic drives me crazy - obv thats one of the edges to the thing - too edgy for me

jhøshea, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

ITS THE I WANNA DRESS UP LIKE A FICTIONAL PEDOPHILE BOWLER THREAD

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

WTF u talking about, gff? the 'tragedy' of millers crossing has to do w/ tom's moment of weakness / mercy and how that eventually requires him to become a murderer. did you even watch that movie?

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

i don't hate TBL but jeez

omar little, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

i dont even like to think abt that sort of thing

jhøshea, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Can someone take a shit on The Ladykillers so I can agree with someone on this thread?

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

the Coens mostly suck.

I DIED, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

god I didn't even realize people went to see Ladykillers

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

yes in fact i did watch that movie. being a murderer doesn't seem that tragic, in context. what i mean is: the elaborate flip floppy plot is all about a dude tied up in the masculine gangster codes so that at every turn it's impossible for him to end up with the woman he really loves (and who in fact loves him)

gff, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

xps

gff, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

they did not write that tho right xp ladykillers

gbx, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

shooter is retarded but kinda worth seeing. sniper is ridiculous and amazing.

omar little, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

i worked with a guy who claimed ex-special forces, insisted he was a sniper. says that he learned from "sniper" about spotters being ordered to kill their sniper counterparts if they didn't carry out the mission. says he called his old spotter buddy "YOU WERE READY TO KILL ME, YOU MOTHERFUCKER?!"

If only Blount were here to back me up on Man on Fire. It is insane and horrible, but it's like listening to GG Allin or particularly egregious rap. You don't have to agree with it to have your mind blown.

Black Hawk Down is almost unwatchable. Cloud of war, battle confusion, etc. yeah yeah yeah but Christ it's just not very interesting to watch whip-pans back and forth between characters you don't really know or have a reason to care about (except for Tom Sizemore, of course). Edited a little more rationally, it might have been good.

milo z, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

Shooter is very fun. Sniper seemed stupid (that's the movie where one guy's warned not to let any pee escape into the river or evil amoeba will swim up his urethra, right), but I might give it a chance on cable.

Master & Commander is tite.

milo z, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

i can't believe you're complaining about irrational editing in black hawk down in the same post as you're sort of praising man on fire

omar little, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

u mad!

omar little, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

M&C's dialogue was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more embarassing and children's theatrickal than i remembered it. i mostly just like it for sweeping shots of big ships and the ocean and stuff.

gbx, Thursday, 15 November 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

+ the doctor and the captain jamming in the stateroom

milo z, Thursday, 15 November 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

MEN MUST BE GOVERNED

gff, Thursday, 15 November 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

"children's theatrickal" no wai!! more movies should have cliff's notes burke vs rousseau scenes.

gff, Thursday, 15 November 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i liked the jams, too. but the MEN MUST BE GOVERNED thing was more overbearing than I remembered. then again, i was *_* at the time, and tend to get a little over-analytical

xp not the CONTENT of the dialogue, but the hamminess! especially merry/pippen dude. there was lots of exaggerated mugging and oh my how british sorts of stuff going on. also, HOLD FAST dude was a cartoon and having him actually say "hold fast" all the time was a little smarmy

gbx, Thursday, 15 November 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

then again, i was *_* at the time

I would have been SO lost.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 15 November 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Up next (actually next-next): Coens traffic in Yiddish stereotypes, Policemen caricatures

This has been at the top of my list to read for awhile, bring it on.
