You've got a mouse. Where?

Pete, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In her flat.

Graham, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is a cat an option?

j.lu, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could always try FRYING THEM. Watch them squeak jumping about in the HOT OIL heh hehh eheheeeehehehe. Actually no I do not mean that anyone who wants to check up on my er, animal rights record.

Sarah, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah = creepy.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Julia, regarding my previous ILE post on this subject, I can't really help you. I don't think I ever got rid of the mouse that was in my apartment -- just successfully kept all the food out of its reach. Haven't heard from it lately, or seen any droppings, so that might just work .. of course, it could be laying low, waiting for me to leave the Girl Scout Cookies out ..

Chris, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Girl Scout Cookies are far worse than fried mice!

MarkH, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, we're all creepy.

BIG HUG!

Graham, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(I am also very much Pete being ignored enjoying)

Graham, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There on the stair, right there!

I saw a mouse in my kitchen Sunday. The first since my cat died six months ago. I went out and bought a "better" mousetrap. I didn't get the trad trap, because I didn't want to buy a whole jar of peanut butter or a whole brick of cheese just to use a couple of grams. Instead of crushing him or her, the nu-trap holds them down by the feet in glue, then poisons him or her. In theory. No takers yet.

Curt, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

just leave a cherished hoodie lying around; eventually the mouse will curl up in the top of it. but it's like narnia - if you're looking for the mouse he won't be there...

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have caught two mice so far. The first one was an awkward customer that cunningly took cover the moment I set foot in the kitchen. Two weeks passed, but one morning I surprised it as it was rooting through my rubbish.

The second was more naive and trapped itself inside a glass jar.

In both instances I released them off-premises.

David, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They can't eat wire wool, so block their mouse holes with it. Problem is you'll end up with dead mouse filled wall cavity. The poison method is effective but when we did it, it was nasty and slow acting and we'd come down to find mice trailing blood from orifices and dying slowly in our kitchen. Not very nice at all. Luckily I'm fairly tolerant fo infestations (pigeons not included) and until the vermin are causing hassle I let them be. Hence roach like things in my 'wardrobe'

alix, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is getting a cat just too obvious an answer? Assuming you're not allergic and don't hate them...

Nicole, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dig out a flute, some stripey tights and lead them down to the Thames.

Jonnie, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonnie's answer has been the most sensible so far.

Nicole, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that sorts the schoolkids with mobiles on bus infestation too!

When capturing mice in "humane traps" how far do you reckon you have to take them so that they don't just come back again?

djh, Friday, 27 February 2015 22:05 (ten years ago)

one month passes...

so do those D Con mouse traps work? I saw my first mouse ever last week, bought the trap yesterday, and around midnight I heard it spring. I can't tell from picking it up (with huge tongs) whether it's inside.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 12:07 (ten years ago)

I got mice in my place again. Got the stickers that you put cheese on or peanut butter. Are the spring traps essential or can I catch them with what I got

kolakube (Ross), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 02:55 (seven years ago)

Recommend a wire cage trap (not the little angled black plastic ones) with peanut butter as a lure. We caught our mice problem (2 mice, over a week) with this, and I released them in "wilds" 4 blocks away. I'm sure the local predators got them.

Or cats (preferably feral/of low breeding) or dogs (preferably with rodent hunting lineages).

My dog was from a litter of a feral dog. He kills everything smaller than him. Cockroaches/mice/rats/possum/nutria/cats...

Also, birds, in mid air. If your favorite songbird descends into my yard below about 7 ft, my dog will leap and catch it in his mouth.

It was cool at first, but after a while its become embarassing. Like cleaning up your husband, the serial killer.

An effective way to stop having mice problems is to have rat problems instead. Never saw a mouse again after we started getting rats. Apart from the smell rats weren't as much trouble because they were smart enough to avoid the cats so we didn't get woken up at 4am by squealing noises and cats running around with skewered mice in their mouths, and at the time the local council would send exterminators for rats free of charge, but mice you had to deal with yourself. They don't do that now because of cuts. But I don't live in the rat flat any more.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 08:07 (seven years ago)

I got an electric (!) trap off amazon, this has been more successful than anything else. They die instantly. Block up every space you can with steel wool. If you release them, you’re supposed to bring them a few miles away or they’ll find their way back.

gyac, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 10:55 (seven years ago)

hey don't kill the mices

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 11:03 (seven years ago)

yeah

we have had a mice problem (triggered, ironically enough, by spillage from an old forgotten bag of cat food from when we were looking after one) but our upstairs neighbours have adopted termination w/ extreme prejudice as their solution and the knock-on effect is fewer mice for us, which is a little sad

there's still the problem of many, many agglomerated droppings in weird places we never check including INSIDE our boiler

we had come to think of them as friends, so mixed feelings if this is truly over. mind you I found some droppings on our stove recently so maybe not

our solution fwiw has been 'try not to leave food out' but the steel wool is probably a better idea tbh

imago, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 11:24 (seven years ago)

I've used the electric traps as a supplement to my cats. Worked well. Kept catching mice for a few weeks until eventually no more mice and no more droppings. Not sure about the humanity of it, but better than glue traps or poison and really nowhere close to me to catch & release them that's not near other homes. Although once I was long-term caring for a friend's pet snake. Had to feed it live mice but one day it just wouldn't go after the mouse and you can't just leave it in there because the mouse might hurt the snake. I tried locking it in a room with my cat. Cruel? Probably, but he had always been an eager hunter of mice. Maybe just putting it right out there made it too easy for him, but he wouldn't go near the thing either. So I scooped it up in my pocket, went for a walk, and casually dumped it along the side of the road.

three months pass...

Problem persists. Find that leaving a light on seems to deter them - anyone know if that’s true? The lil guy comes out about 1 am - 2 often ruining my sleep

sunburst N snowblind (Ross), Friday, 15 June 2018 05:39 (seven years ago)

I’m gonna boil some peppermint tea and speed the bags. Apparently works in days

one month passes...

So I've seen a mouse in my apartment yesterday and today. Must remember to go to the store and get traps (die little fucker(s)).
