Isn't doves just another name for pigeons :s

Hmm...rock doves and pigeons do have the same binomial nomenclature. Did not know!

BUT:

All the dove/peace imagery I've ever seen has been of white doves:

And they're a different species: Ringneck Dove - white mutation (Streptopelia risoria)

The rock dove/pigeon is an entirely different genus even! (Columba livia)

So does pigeon = dove in most peoples' minds?

AFAIK, the common citified pigeon was 'domesticated' from the rock dove by pigeon fanciers, but it went feral again, retaining most of the traits that the breeders emphasized. So, just as a schnauzer and a spaniel are both equally canis familiaris, a pigeon is still a rock dove.

I don't think of rock dove when someone says dove---the rock dove is my canis lupus to the white Ringneck dove's canis familarus.

white ringneck dove = Collared Dove? I love those ones too.

when i lived in Krakow for a bit, they would make nests on my balcony and wake me up with their heat-induced cooiing every morning at 5. i destroyed eight nests in three months.

and nobody understood why i was going bananas except my german and british friends.
