Difficult task, but Gordon Brown, George Bush and the Queen might all give it a shot if you ask them

...the victim was also punished for violating Saudi Arabia's laws on segregation that forbid unrelated men and women from associating with each other. She was initially sentenced to 90 lashes for being in the car of a strange man. On appeal, the Arab News reported that the punishment was not reduced but increased to 200 lashes and a six-month prison sentence.

On the other hand Saudi ambassadors going to Morocco and fucking expensive prostitutes is okay.

― Tom D., Friday, 16 November 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)
wonder what will happen to Saudi Arabia when they run out of oil?

So I have a job offer with a "global construction firm" in Saudi Arabia that's too good to turn down...
― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 16 November 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)
I know it's not as simple as that...
― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 16 November 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)
...and I'm not having a go at Guy (did he ever take the job I wonder?) but seriously I cannot imagine working there (easy for me to say I know).
― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 16 November 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)
My aunt worked there as a nurse for a couple of years in the 80s and from what I gather basically lived in a Westerner's compound with very little contact with the country outside.
― Matt DC, Friday, 16 November 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)
i'd work there, if i got the chance. that's not the same as defending their political/human rights setup.
― darraghmac, Friday, 16 November 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)
My dad worked there! For about a year. Didn't take too much to do with the country or the people however.

But isn't every company there just assisting the regime? Look at us they say - BAe, etc. has no problem working with us we don't need to change any of our repulsive policies we'll just dangle another wodge of cash in front of you and you puny westerners will cave.
― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 16 November 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, shame on you huge multinational companies.
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 16 November 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

lazy, or is that even something people bother accusing you of anymore?
― darraghmac, Friday, 16 November 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)
Clearly, in many criminal events there are no clear-cut victims and criminals, quite often both sides are guilty. Saudi law clearly criminalises unchaperoned one-on-one contact, as a public safety measure, designed to prevent the occurrence of exactly this kind of situation. Saudi Arabia must be congratulated for their low crime rate. Scurrilous attacks on the judiciary such as the one committed by the alleged victim are deserving of punishment. Mike, Sacramento, USA

I support the imposition of this penalty. We should be very much strict on our customs and that those who breach them should be severely punished. Well done. Msuza, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
To be fair they are very much in the minority.
