Is ILE offensive?

So, occasionally at work I share a computer with this chronically angry woman--luckily, her and I work completely different shifts, so I very rarely see her. When I do, however, she is as sweet as ever and seems like a very nice lady. I know she is chronically angry, because I hear about how she complains about me all the time! She whines about how I leave a mess of the desk, throws my papers around, and is generally very unpleasant about me. If I weren't told about this second hand, though, I wouldn't know at all that she doesn't care for my work habits. Today at work I got an e-mail from my boss telling me that she had received a complaint from said woman that I look at "offensive websites"--at first I was totally confused. At work we do have a policy that one cannot look at pornographic websites, which is well understandable, but when does something become "offensive" ? I came to the logical conclusion, as I looked through my "recent places" and the subject headings of "Who's Better in Bed: British or US?" came up, that Ms. Chronically Angry was refering to ILE as "offensive"! Now, I don't find ILE offensive in the least. What's offensive and non-offensive? If I were to look under bookmarks and find a Christian Website, could I complain and say *I* was offended? Needless to say, I am horribly embarassed about the situation and have probably been labeled a pervert by said boss.

If she saw this thread, she would be offended!

ILE's not offensive in a pornographic manner, as I don't recall anyone going into detail about anything, but I don't know what you should do about the impression she gave.

Well, thankfully, I had my head on straight when I made this post and did it from my school's computer lab.

...just as Pip the gamekeeper slid his hand deep into Miss Fotheringham's generous bosoms, causing her to catch her breath and clench even more tightly together those robust, matronly buttocks, enveloped in seersucker...

"Offensive" is one of those totally meaningless, situationist(?) terms that gets applied ex post facto as though it has a fixed meaning, like "inappropriate". Grrrrr! You should ask your boss in advance what standard you should apply to determine whether a website is "acceptable". I bet it will rule out sites like Yahoo!, eBay, Amazon. Places on Ms. Backstab's recent list, too.

well there have been some questionable photos and links posted here on occassion that the more squeamish might deem offensive. And there are plenty of curse words and sex talk.

Samantha, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Links should never be considered offensive. That's like calling the phone book dirty.

Curt, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well duh, Curt, you know what I mean. Links that *go* to iffy sites. Although I have to give most ILXers credit for warning you not to click on links to iffy sites if you're at work.

Samantha, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm horribly embarrassed that one of my silly threads has gotten someone into trouble at work.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

she is the pervert for snooping on your internet usage.

di, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, Sammantha. I wasn't accusing you, just reacting to the idea that a link might be as out of bounds as the site it points to. 'Cause next thing you know, it's a link to a link, and before long the whole net is taboo. Imagine the horror!

Curt, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I find this website rather defensive.

mike hanle y, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cuntish.

Dan Irons, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes I think it is.

But then I'm a prick like that.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

of course.

they pay you to hang out here?? cool!

Ron Hudson, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I am kind of thinking she's the mad, pervish freak for looking at "recent website" just dying to find something smutty to freak out over! I got really worked up about this all earlier today--she super needs to lighten up! Plus, did I mention she has a picture of her son on her desk in front of an american flag holding a gun? I find *that* offensive, yo.

Mandee, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eek, Dan, it's not the fault of your thread--it was just that after I looked in my recent sites and saw that one listed I realized that one might be offended by threads on a similar subject line. However, I do think she would have had to actually go to the site itself to explore real potential smuttiness and offensive content, so if she did that she must be just, you know, A DIRTY CURIOUS PERVERT!

Mandee, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, it was sure offensive the day a supervisor was behind me and I clicked on the iLE thread that features nude butt picture

mike hanle y, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

homo vadgewanking jizzcakes.
