Me too, too lazy to even get non-ILX opinions. :(
― Abbott, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)
Clunky and disappointing.

Abbott - I thought the main kid wasn't very good; I thought the kids knocking about scenes were really stagey; I thought it was straining for wider significance too hard; I thought the characterisation of some of the kids was all over the place; I thought the whole thing was almost totally ruined by the shitey end scene with its abysmal Smiths cover.
There were some terrific bits though, chief among them the drug scene where things go nasty, and the scene where Lol rejects Combo.

There's a thread already about this film, btw:
This Is England.
― Alba, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)
(I think it doesn't come up in a search because of the full stop)
aw thx Alba,I was surprised there was not another.
― Abbott, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)
Well, when I searched, it was that one that came up, and not this one.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

― DG, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)
I couldn't really get past 19 year olds (?) wanting to hang out with a 12 year old kid.
― paulhw, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I saw Sixteen Years of Alcohol and now I'm not sure I can bear This is England. It's one of the few decent movies available on Netflix instant watching service, though, so I probably will.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
Hmm. Lauren, is that Netflix instant watching thing still PCs only?
― paulhw, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)
It may be, the home computer at my apt (not mine) is a PC. Never tried on a mac -- but I know the doo-dad for watching the movies won't run on Firefox, I have to open an IE window for it.
And I'm Laurel.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)
it's from the director of Dead Man's Shoes?
