When I was about eight, I climbed up a tree with one of my friends and a policeman told us to get down. We did but as soon as he went, we went back up. We thought we were being really rebellious but looking back, we weren't.
Once, my brother was walking home from school and a policeman told him he shouldn't be smoking whilst in school uniform because it was against school rules. My brother explained that whilst, as a member of the Metropolitan Police, it was the policeman's job to enforce the laws of the country, it wasn't his job to enforce the rules of Tiffin Boys School. The policeman was a bit annoyed by this response but knew it was right and left my brother alone.

I've never really gotten much of anything though. My mom's been arrested but that's to be expected from her. I got picked up once for taking my shirt off when I was walking home, I'm all it's fucking hot, and they're all, you can't do that, it's against the law, and I'm all if I was a guy it wouldn't be, and there all nope, and I'm all wouldn't you rather see me naked than that guy (insert pointing at some really horrible enormous man here), and the guy was all laughing and he's like, I can't answer that, I'm a professional (whatever that's supposed to mean), and he let me off. My mom was all, yeah, fuck the police, you tell those sexist pig bastards! Weirdo.

Of course, I was once pulled over for passing a parked school bus with its STOP sign sticking out (which I didn't see). Meanwhile, 95 other cars zoomed by while the bus (parked in an alcove beside a school) would stick its STOP sign out intermittently to allow kids to get on board. No ticket for them, $450 fine for me. Were it not for The Boss being a former cop, I'd have bought THE worst Christmas gifts ever bought.

Always say "No".
It surprises them. Then, no matter what they ask you, or say to you, keep your mouth shut. Say absolutely NOTHING. Whatever you say, will get twisted into making you look guilty. Total silence is the best, safest policy.

Eh, what kind of grilling danger is there on this? It's not difficult for a politician to talk around -- respect the court's decision, find situation "troubling," say it speaks to precisely the larger problems you're running for office to correct, proclaim ultimate vision of trust and hope and mutual respect between communities and those who police them
- "But do you think the decision was the wrong one?" - "I'm not a judge, and I didn't sit through the trial."

Judge's statement to the NYT: "Those people, they don't even talk right, I could hardly understand them! And get to the POINT, already. They just don't make any sense, throw out the testimony."
― Laurel, Friday, 25 April 2008 18:30 (eighteen years ago)
I should actually reframe my knee-jerk statement from above to fit the facts better: it's not "Don't Frighten Police" that we're hearing, it's a much richer Catch-22 -- "Don't Be Frightened of Dudes Approaching You With Guns (Because They May Be Cops Who Will Shoot You)"
― nabisco, Friday, 25 April 2008 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
It's just irritating that we're asked to accept an insane margin of incompetence and error (and sheer covered-up malice) in police forces: the basic deal remains "in our efforts to police you were are probably going to murder a few of you along the way, and now that everyone knows that there's not so much point to even trying to minimize the instance of that, so our advice is to be middle-class and white and look as harmless as possible"

Those people, they don't even talk right,
is this a real quote? cuz um, if so lolz that sentence isn't grammatically CORRECT
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:01 (eighteen years ago)
No, what he actually said was this:
He added that many of the prosecution’s witnesses, including Mr. Bell’s friends and the two wounded victims, were simply not believable. “At times, the testimony of those witnesses just didn’t make sense,” the judge said.
...from which I just kind of extrapolated.
― Laurel, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:01 (eighteen years ago)
oh never mind
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:02 (eighteen years ago)
anyway cops are racist murderers shockah
Single, too! Hey wait
I think the nonsensical testimony bit refers somewhat to actual conflicting statements and confusions, but I'm still skeptical of the whole list of problems given in his statement: obviously the burden of proof is going to cut against the prosecution, but he seems to have been ready to discard testimony based on the kind of confusion that's just a given in a situation like this, along with other factors (like criminal convictions and witnesses "with an interest in the outcome of the trail") that are equally just ... kind of a given.
The statement also doesn't really go into what the legal lines are between the criminal charges and lesser non-criminal negligence/incompetence/etc., so it's hard to tell what determinations were made about that, and how much he just kinda tossed the prosecution's narrative as incoherent and untrustworthy!
― nabisco, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:25 (eighteen years ago)
It's kind of a maxim that if the prosecution's narrative is incoherent and untrustworthy the defendant's going to walk. It also looked like the DA fucked the case up. Trying a case like this for seven weeks is going to lead to a lot of chances for reasonable doubt.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)
amazing that the DA would fuck up a case against policemen
― El Tomboto, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

in case she won't put out?
― milo z, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:44 (eighteen years ago)
Well, obviously, to that first part -- what's hard for me to sort out from the statement is how much that incoherence/untrustworthiness has to do with factual inconsistencies and how much of it stemmed from unchangeable things about the situation itself (e.g., the facts that people with criminal records were the ones involved, or that witnesses wound up with an interest in the outcome of the trial due to, umm, having been shot)
― nabisco, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:44 (eighteen years ago)
and the fact that in any case involving the prosecution of police officers the DA is going to dump a couple of sacks on one side of the courtroom while the NY FOOP goes out and finds one of the better defensive dream teams the city has to offer
― El Tomboto, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

They probably would have buried it in the grand jury phase if they were trying to throw the case. Prosecutors HATE losing high profile cases that go to trial, absolutely hate it.

cops do a lot of standing around don't they?
these fuckers have been across the street, just standing around for almost an hour, blabbing about god knows what, putting on a big-dick show. god i hate them.
the reason they are there is because someone had a medical emergency and was carried out on a stretcher by the emts, who did their job in fifteen minutes and then left.
not the cops though! they can never just leave.
fuck the police and fuck anyone who supports current levels of police involvement in regular community service situations like medical emergencies, and everything else as well.
ugh now two neighbors have approached and they're having a pow-wow. GTFO!
