4-5-1 could be seen as a defensive formation, however if the two midfield wingers play a more attacking role it can be likened to 4-3-3. The formation can be used to grind out 0-0 draws or preserve a lead, as the packing of the centre midfield makes it difficult for the opposition to build-up play. Because of the 'closeness' of the midfield, the opposing team's forwards will often be starved of possession. However, due to the lone striker, the centre of the midfield does have the responsibility of pushing forward as well. The defensive midfielder will often control the pace of the game.

I'm utterly shocked that it turned out like this. Who'd have thought a guy appointed because the premierleague wanted a dickhead (B Barwick) would have worked with the former Chairman of Altrincham and Sheffield Wednesday to appoint a guy who was third chocie because a Premier League club wanted it (S McLaren) and it all ended up a bit shit.
― The Boyler, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)
In his defence. Because he's rubbish there was no point trying to change the already crappy england team. He just would have made it worse. And the media would have slaughtered him if he'd dropped the superstars. He simply filled the space between Sven and whatever silly business comes next.

=it's never ceases to amaze me how many of the worst footballing organisations have senile corrupt germans as their heads.
I'm struggling to think of one. No German has ever run FIFA; Gerhard Aigner was Gen Sec of UEFA (not President) and was defo about 8/10 for my money. I'm sure corrupt germans have at some stage run the German FA, but most sensible commentators acknowledge the DFB is the best run and most on-the-ball in Europe.
Carry on.
