But you know what's more expensive? Divorce!
― roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)
Is it? You can divorce with mutual consent, no? But then that doesn't include a pedicure nor a massage.
― nathalie, Friday, 23 November 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)
BTW I have never been to a spa. I should be "selfish" and indulge in some pedi/manicure,... But I always feel that pampering myself is selfish and I hate spending money on myself that isn't visible. WHich is ridiculous I know as it would be visible cause I wouldn't look so god damn tired due to sleep deprivation. hmmm.

But without the beauty regime, how am I gonna get a husband to divorce?
I'm scared of the whole spa pampering treatment, as I fear making conversation with the therapists. Also, I can do a pretty decent mani/pedi on myself at home.

i feel weird about having other people touch my feet. it seems really classist. is it?
i have really gross feet, but i did spend over a half hour pumicing them yesterday, because there is nothing else to do at my mom's house besides talk

i also did a face mask thing, and plucked my eyebrows. i'd be so well groomed if i lived in the suburbs!

Actually getting a reasonable pedicure is WAY cheaper in NYC than in my hometown (and it's about the only thing that is). I think it's the competition: in West MI pedicures are still considered something of a luxury, so you get a sort of "elevated" atmosphere/service (even the usual sort of Korean place is big and fancy and has newer equip) but the cost is about $45. In NYC mani/pedis are standard attire, and you can get a perfectly reasonable pedi from your local salon for about $16. Some places that even includes a complimentary neck rub while you wait.

I am decidedly NOT a salon snob, I'm just as happy to go to Seven Color Nails or whatever on Flatbush.

Altho this one place is Jersey City was REALLY the shit, and it was only fifteen bucks. I sort of miss living near there.
When I was on holiday in New York I had a pedicure and manicure at this place near Bleeker Street. It was great, but I'd never consider doing it in my home town of London.

If you go to a beauty school you can get cheap pedicure.
I am v v scared of spas and spa treatments, tho.

bell, my feeling re class/service profession/people handling my feet is that people who work in salons are doing a job. If I feel like that job is demeaning to them, then it puts a burden on them to potentially either accept my sympathy/pity/awkwardness or reject it with anger, defensiveness, etc. If I can accept it as honest work, probably done for a temporary period of acclimatization (for immigrants, for example), and for which I will both pay the establishment AND tip the service provider AND be pleasant and well mannered...then there doesn't have to be any maneuvering around subtext. After all, THEY'RE the ones with the expertise that I'm willing to pay for, and wait in line for.

i am kind of intrigued by the idea of going to a spa but i think it would be really boring. i don't get those people that go on vacation to thailand or somewhere really cool and just spend the whole time at a spa or giving themselves enemas. please give your plane tix to someone like me who would enjoy the food and go sightseeing k thx.

does divorce come with a final goodbye fuck?
― Crêpe, Saturday, 24 November 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)
I went on a spa day once, it was super boring. I think you have to go WITH someone to talk with, unless you are really really stressed out and tired and can actually appreciate the down-time.

That's me right now. My 30th birthday is next month and what I really want is a complete mani/pedi/facial/massage package at a day spa. It just seems so awesome and indulgent. I've been dropping hints so hopefully come Dec 28th I'll be somewhere blissed out while listening to a crappy sounds of the rainforest cd while someone smears magical creams all over my face. Ahhhhhhh.

A friend took a bunch of us (all friends) to a spa day one afternoon and it was a lot of fun. But it would be less so if you went alone. I had a massage (awesome) and a seaweed wrap (v. v. weird).
Afterward we all went out for dinner and drinks. I got home and was soooooo sleepy it was just insane.

Well, they took the hint! Although b-day is today I spent 5.5 hours at an Aveda spa yesterday being massaged, smeared with potions, and painted. It was heavenly. Best of all, it was all a surprise. I thought I was going in for a manicure but at lunch my husband kept handing me envelopes that contained more gift certificates. It turns out that he's been organizing this for a month and got all of our friends to chip in and each person or couple bought me a different treatment. So sweet!

I wish I understood the appeal of this - as it is, I can't imagine anything worse!

I guess someday I'll surrender and probably enjoy it.
