I don't know much about this stuff, but with th cold front, I got the urge to drink some and picked up a bottle of VSOP Roullet et Fils Cognac. Not top-shelf, but not the cheapest on there, either.
Mmmm...booze thread!

i finally learned how to sip cognac so it doesn't taste like listerine. it actually tastes really good when you do it right. of course i only tried it with good cognac.

Why is cognac always so 'spensive? Is it just a conspicuous consumption thing?
I don't like Mexican brandy.

I bought some Chateau de Pellehaut Armagnac a few years ago based on its ranking in an LA Times judging, and it's great stuff.
― nickn, Sunday, 25 November 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)
i need to learn how to buy a good one. haven't had cognac or armagnac in a while but it's an excellent winter drink (and it makes you feel classy!).

Hot Toddy:
1-2 cups water 2 shots whisky 1 slice lemon 1 teabag honey
Boil water. Add teabag, squeeze lemon, and add whisky and honey. Use a mug.

Can we talk about Port on this thread? I served some with Manchego and fig preserves after dinner to guests and I felt like quite a bourgeois swine. Good stuff though . . .

When it's December in Virginia and you're camped out under a log along the Appalachian Trail, cold Instant Apple Cider and Captain Morgan is not the way to go...

So I bought another make of brandy because my old reliable wasn't on the shelf, and I don't like the difference it makes in my Sidecars (soapy and/or perfumy in a bad way). An experiment with a brandy Old Fashioned was not significantly better. Will try a Sazerac next, but does anyone have any other suggestions for brandy cocktails?

Vieux Carre.
― mick signals, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:59 (seven years ago)
yeah, try that. if it doesn't work well with lemon, or vermouth, or mostly unadorned, it's probably a lost cause.
what brand did you buy?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 15:09 (seven years ago)
Try to make a "not pisco" sour with whatever brandy you have. But make the peruvian version with the egg whites.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 15:20 (seven years ago)
I still am angling to get a 1978 bottle of Laubade armagnac. I only have a bottle of madeira (boal) from my birthday year and want to add to my collection of one.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 15:21 (seven years ago)
Bought Salignac because in the past I've used it satisfactorily for mixing, but this time....Paul Masson Grande Amber is my old reliable (wouldn't try to drink it straight, but it's excellent for cooking and I liked the Sidecars it made).
― Accattony! Accattoni! Accattoné! (j.lu), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)
never cooked with brandy before, that sounds good.
― calzino, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)
1) The Brandy Manhattan (sometimes called The Washington or The Metropolitan in certain cocktail guides): Disappointing but keeps tugging at my mind (maybe with a better vermouth? Or with a larger shot of that cherry syrup I made?)
2) The Vieux Carre: Not bad, but too fussy for my tastes and deosn't go through this brandy quickly enough.
3) The Brandy Sazerac: Not perfect, but the best of the bunch so far.
The silver lining: I'm going through this bottle of brandy at a clip that makes me feel I'm not wasting booze.
