I've only had the last two editions but I am going to order up the back issues because so far it has made me buy some Lego (note plural or lego is lego) and I am seriously considering building a compressed air whistle from bits of old plastic pipe.
Total Geek fodder but I love it.

I bought the lego to make the key holder from this months edition. I might be able to not loose my keys if the are attached by lego next to the door.

I think calling O'Reilly one of the world's great publishers is a bit of a stretch. They do an OK line in programming books with non-ugly covers and lay-flat spines, but whoever designs the interior of the books sucks at their job and their quality control when commissioning authors seems to consisting of rolling a 1d6.
I have bought Make as a gift, but whenever I read it myself I think of neat juice bottle hacks and want to kill myself.
