the only elton john song I like.

my wife hates it (she prefers "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" cuz she has a crush on Kiki Dee)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

This is I'M STILL STANDING in its true glory.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

This is the world's most BITCHINEST song And video!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

I like that there is 2 seconds of him putting his hand on the butt of a bikini babe to attempt to counteract the other 3:05 fantastic leather bellhops.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I love that video, saw it all the time when it was a current single.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

I very much wish I could be in this video. The dancing is the BITCHINEST dancing in the world!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

The director did Bonnie Tyler's BRIGHT EYES video too.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is what Richard O'Brien wishes his life was.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

is the "I don't have AIDS!" subtext of this song all in my mind...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

YES, YES IT IS

HI DERE, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

Hello! "Looking like a true survivor...after all this time. yeah! yeah! yeah!"

to say: I thought that too

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

oh dan perry doesn't think abt aids

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe it's about how he is still proud his legs work

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

I will always associate this song (and Mellancamp's "Small Town") with this heartwrenching tv movie I stayed up late to watch when I was ten (both songs were in the movie). I cried.

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Lots of fists in the here video. "

lolz

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

He kind of looks like a Pet Shop Boy in this video!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

original "I Don't Have AIDS" chorus deemed "not-catchy-enough" by Bernie Taupin

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

OMG G00blar I would cry too!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

can we talk about how much better this song is than his other 80s singles, esp "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues"

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

It would be better if the "yeah! yeah! yeah!" was "I Don't! Have! AIDS!"

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

I want to sing this at karaoke SO BAD you have no idea.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

I think I have watched this video 35 times in the past two days.

^^^NAUGHTY

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Hey maybe the 'I-don't-have-AIDS-subtext' was the reason they used it in that movie.

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

what movie, AIDS: The Musical?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

esp "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues"

I guess now we know who doesn't roll like thundah under the covers.

kenan, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

That song is maudlin, dull pap, and they don't say "yeah! yeah! yeah! I'M STILL STANDING!" even once in it.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

No, the movie about the kid who got AIDS.

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Taupin cracks me up, dude writing all these songs about Hard Men with Hard Lives for this complete princess to sing.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if that movie is on Netflix.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

User Comments: Not Bad For a Health Class Video.

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

I had to watch The Ryan White Story in health class this week. It has movie of the week written all over it. The movie does not get into any medical or scientific discussion of AIDS and I don't expect it to. Its not a movie I would choose to show in health class, but as any student at Grant High School would know, ANYTHING is better than listening to a certain health teacher (I won't say his name) talk. The Ryan White Story is also not the worst movie Mr. Jacobs showed in his class (oops!).

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

oops!

OMG I kiss you symbol on Turkey flag!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

Director also made Rod Stweart's Young Turks an equally bitching song and k-super video!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

HA, we had to watch the Ryan White story in class, too. It has some of Judith Light's finest tv movie moments. I think this was back in 1989 or so.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'M STILL STANDING

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Same director for Heartache..., too!

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

All of Judith Light's tv moments were fine.

That video made my night. Thank you Abbott.

ENBB, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think "Leather Jackets" probably has AIDS.

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

Have you seen the Total Eclipse of the Heart video ENBB? Same director and just as fun/insane! NINJAS. There are ninjas and Catholic boys getting doused in water.

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

the infamous Seth Putnam of band A.C. (it stands for something that rhymes with Fanal Funt) claimed he used to perform this song live and dedicate it to someone in the audience that was handicapped.

What a tool.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

Director also did the videos for Sex (I'm A...) and most of Duran Duran's early vids.

There's a ballroom Kingfish '80s zombie in it!

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

I. You people who hated on I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues are crazy.

II. The Young Turks video is soooo great. It's like the McDonald's dancing scene from Mac and Me.

III. I almost can't believe how great the song itself (Young Turks) is.

IV. Shakey's "NAUGHTY" post up there reminded me of this magazine from the eighties which, if I remember correctly, was completely dedicated to music videos. I remember one (that was particularly titillating to my eleven(?) year-old self) in which they had all these stills from parts of videos that had been banned from MTV for being too sexually graphic or whatever...Girls on Film, China Girl, etc. Does anyone else remember that magazine, or am I remembering it wrong, and was it just a special issue of Star Hits or something?

dell, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott - what the hell did I just watch? TEotH video is phenomenal. I have to watch it again. I'm so confused! I can't even pick a favorite part. There is just too much goodness.

remy bean, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Platonic?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

The Berlin video? Jesus god I know but it is v. funny!

Some TEotH love:
- fencer takes off mask and water drips slowly all over his face
- backlit dancey leather dudes on staircase
- angel releases a dove (!!!!!)
-the kids at the end mouthing impossibly high-pitched "turn aaround BRIGHT EYES"
- football palyers!

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

I was watching later Berlin videos and I had no idea Terri Nunn got so goffed out eventually! (bandmates too)

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

I don't know what made me think about this thread but I <3 it. I think maybe I just wanted to watch the Total Eclipse of the Heart video again.

Also Young Turks = love.

EN Save-A-Ken BB (ENBB), Saturday, 4 April 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

OK, the choreographed dancing in Young Turks is A++.

TEotH might be the best video ever.

I think it was a magazine completely dedicated to music videos. And that one section featured the ones named above as well as stills from "Hello Again" by the Cars (directed by Andy Warhol), "Up the Creek" by Cheap Trick (featuring a topless Bun E. Carlos cavorting in a swimming pool with topless women) and I think the aforementioned "Sex (I'm a...)" Berlin video.

So dell, you weren't dreaming. I saw it too.

Young Turks is the video that makes me want to readopt my junior high hobby of learning and copying music video dances.
