I did cry at Di's funeral as they buried her on a Saturday and we didn't get a day off work. Also some of the pubs were shut.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

"Merry Christmas, Ange"

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

The only two of these I know I saw was Alan Bradley getting hit by a tram and Who Shot JR? Probly saw a couple of the Bonds. May have seen the To the Manor Born ep god help me that shit was like the start of the 80s.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

lemon meringue pie!

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

I never saw Jaws, is it any good?

braveclub, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

also the first 15 movie i ever saw

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

Akshully the Diana funeral was on in every fucking pub so technically I saw a little bit of it.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

I think Jaws is the only one after I was born that I didn't see (apart from Princess Anne's wedding, but I was only 11 months old)

ailsa, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

FA Cup replay: Chelsea vs. Leeds (28.49 million) 29 April 1970, BBC1/ITV

I was sent to bed when this was on, as it was on too late!

Mark G, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even know what Only Fools it was, but it has to be that.

stevie, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Prince Edward's wedding didn't make it?

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Den and Angie but this sense makes no sense, like, at all. Why was Crocodile Dundee such a big deal as late as 1989? Why did so many people watch Pat Butcher running down a small child?

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Crocodile Dundee = Xmas day movie before large scale uptake of Sky.

Everybody watched Pat Butcher for the lulz.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

Over half of these were on Nov-Jan = fuck all else to do.

The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Charles + Di wedding was ace, toddler spacecadet and family got the entire beach to themselves on a sunny July day

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

We went down the park and played footie.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

The only one of those that I know I saw was The Wedding of Princess Anne and Capt. Mark Phillips. And I was four at the time.

A lot of these past cultural touchstones of British tv are only such for people whom the Daily Mail approves of. My family of lefty, immigrants were not like that at all.

Stone Monkey, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

It seems odd that no other FA Cup final would get anywhere near the same figures as that one replay.

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

What is EastEnders anyway? They play that 10x a week here in the US on PBS... I tried watching it once, and what is it, a soap opera for old people?

burt_stanton, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

also something weird about a series 1 sitcom finale getting so many more viewers than any other episode of the show (or other sitcoms from the time) - as if thousands of people tuned in just to see the end without seeing any of the others.

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Burt it's a prime time soap but it's audience is across the board. It's probably more popular with kids than Coronation Street.

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

I thought it was the one where Penelope Keith finally hooked up with that dude out of Only When I Laugh that was the big ratings ep there, and I'm sure that wasn't the end of the first series.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Because kids have no taste and revel in unpleasantness.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

If I had to choose to watch one of these now I might go for the RVP. Voted Fools & Horses because it's the one I enjoyed the most at the time (altho there was much cringeworthy) and don't really care about any of the others enough now to pick them.

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Incidentally, Pat Butcher's wedding dress was hanging up in my wardrobe for a while a few months ago. I'm a little disappointed her wedding didn't make the list.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember her getting married but I do remember Mike Read's first appearance in the show. Masterful.

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

REID

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Funeral of Margaret Thatcher (26.4 million) 29 September 2009, BBC1/ITV/MTV Base/Setanta

Billy Dods, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Wanna see that one live.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

It'll probably have to kick off at noon on a Sunday and the police presence will be unbelievable.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

Incidentally, Pat Butcher's wedding dress was hanging up in my wardrobe for a while a few months ago. I'm a little disappointed her wedding didn't make the list.

-- Matt DC,

Yo have to explain this.

Anna, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

You even, I'm not trying to be all youth.

Anna, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

(ie 'Yo! DC! Explain bro!')

Anna, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

he bought it as something to wear during house chores, v simple.

blueski, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Den & Angie but I think there should be an honourable mention for the 1985 World Snooker Championship Final - 18.5M viewers, and that's a post-midnight BBC2 figure!

onimo, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

HOLY SHIT
MAN WALKS ON FUCKING MOON

cmon people. (not that i saw it meself.)

ledge, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Not enough TVs back then, I assume?

Anna - my (now former) housemate bought it off eBay. It's actually the dress from her wedding to Roy, which isn't quite as exciting. I believe it was supposed to be part of a charity auction which was then cancelled, which is just as well seeing as it only made £4 on eBay.

It's a two-piece really, and the waistline is like a pair of clown trousers, with elastic braces to match.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, no, that doesn't make sense seeing as the 66 World Cup Final is in there.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Lunar is fake
